ARCHIVED The Hardest Part About Celiac For Me Is...
srall replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think this is really good advice. When we went to England last summer I made sure we had a kitchen. This trip to New Orleans we won't have the luxury, but hopefully a fridge. (The hotel is part of a convention). But in our travels we have learned to research ahead of time and book our hotel based around proximity to a Whole Foods, Outback, or nicer... -

ARCHIVED The Hardest Part About Celiac For Me Is...

Thanks for the advice. We always find a Whole Foods first thing whenever we travel. And I guess we'll be spending a lot of money on dinners out...but it's still New Orleans! -

ARCHIVED The Hardest Part About Celiac For Me Is...
srall replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We're going to New Orleans this summer...is this going to be hard? My answer to the OP is "all of the above": I miss convenience, carefree traveling and eating out, not knowing if I have a virus or if I've been glutened, what food might be making me sick this week... But I love feeling better... -
Amanda, I have only been gluten free for 2 years, but I will tell you I'm reading Wheat Belly right now, and if I ever had any doubts about eating gluten free...this has solidified it for me. I believe everyone would be healthier cutting most to all wheat out their diets. You are doing your body a huge favor and adding years to your life. I think that...

ARCHIVED Just A Vent- In Laws Are Making Fun Of Celiac
srall replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sometimes I think if I wrote what I actually wanted to say when I respond to posts like this that I'd get kicked off. Oh my... They are idiots and morons. I have a friend right now who is so sick and tired all the time. She has horrible migraines. She's married to an Italian man and the bulk of their diet is pasta and bread. Another mutual friend... -

ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
srall replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel so bad that you feel this hopeless. I understand the grief and the loss...especially the loss of convenience, and feeling left out. 2 years in I am still dealing with those feelings. I guess I am "lucky" because I felt 100% better on the diet and never questioned its importance. Then I had a 7 year old who was also so so sick and it was an enormous... -
That is very frustrating. My daughter had constant fevers before going gluten free. Since last November, 2010, when she was diagnosed, she's had one low grade fever for one day. I don't think she was glutened. I think she just got a virus. I always assumed the fevers were a side effect of undiagnosed celiac, because her body couldn't fight anything off...

You are a good mom...I could never do the gluten challenge. After being off gluten for 8 weeks I was on vacation and thought I'd just let loose on the gluten a little bit...BIG mistake. Anyhoo, ended up at the doctors not knowing what the heck happened and was told, "I think you have celiac but you'll need to eat gluten for 8 weeks to diagnose." I'd just...

I agree: Either I read the label myself or I make it myself before I eat it...the risk is too great.

				ARCHIVED Holiday Successes And Failures
srall replied to thleensd's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Now that I've posted, AND read through the responses I do want to give a shout out to my wonderful inlaws. Ever since my diagnosis they go out of their way to have gluten free options for me. They did great...just to much cc in a normal kitchen. I realized on this trip that I've gotten D every time I've traveled. I've so far blamed maybe drinking more... -

				ARCHIVED Holiday Successes And Failures
srall replied to thleensd's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't read through all the responses yet...but I am going to. My big bug was trying to be so careful at my in-laws and cc, but I still got the worst D. So my husband asks why I thought I was getting so sick. And I said, "Well, there are just so many crumbs, it's impossible to avoid them." To which he rolls his eyes and says, and I quote: "Jesus... -
Oh that was only in the beginning. After my daughter was diagnosed the kitchen went mostly gluten free. (Sometimes I cannot contain my husband) But I will NEVER EVER EVER make something with gluten that neither my daughter or I can eat
 -
Hmmm. Might be the next step for me too.

ARCHIVED "can You Eat This? What About That?"
srall replied to New Community Member's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh I know I know. That drove me crazy. Now what drives me crazy is people saying "Are you still doing that gluten free diet?". Um, yes. That would be a forever thing. I don't know if this will help, but what I tell people is that it's easier to think about what you can eat instead of what you can't. I usually just say, the diet is pretty easy (hee... -
When I first went gluten free I still made gluten-filled food for my husband and daughter. It took so long before I was out of the habit of testing their food as I was cooking it. I'm glad you didn't have a terrible reaction.

ARCHIVED Sad For The Child But Not Much I Can Do
srall replied to elfie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I wouldn't be too aggressive...I hope. When I talk to people about gluten free I'm usually more enthusiastic. I think I could talk to her without being harsh. Maybe my opinion of doctors has changed so much over the last two years, but I hope as a woman living with gluten intolerance (I believe undiagnosed celiac based on DH rash...but I'm self... -

ARCHIVED Sad For The Child But Not Much I Can Do
srall replied to elfie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't disagree. I have been very conflicted about my lukewarm response. I knew she was overwhelmed...I mean, the baby was only a week old. Next time I see her I am going to be very clear about getting both those boys gluten free asap. I can't believe her pedi was so "whatever" about a positive blood test. I should find out who the pediatrician is too... -

ARCHIVED Sad For The Child But Not Much I Can Do
srall replied to elfie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had a few situations come up with kids where I want to shout at the parents but feel like it's not my place. My hair stylist (and good friend) has a son who has had terrible eczema. She went gluten free for him and it cleared up the eczema as well as his sinus problems. The main problem was that she is divorced and her husband thinks it's a load... -

ARCHIVED How To Explain That I Don't Want To Eat Out
srall replied to llama3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have BTDT. I was just done with it when I spent $25 on a plain caesar salad...just lettuce and plain chicken...and oil. Ugh. So, I'm married and my husband is on board since I do all the cooking, but for the times it does come up, I usually eat before I go, then order a glass of wine. The one piece of advice I do have is to try and make sure you... -

ARCHIVED Just When I Thought Feeding My 3 Year Old A Gluten And Dairy Free Diet Was Hard Enough
srall replied to Hailiesmom08's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I believe it will get easier. The huge advantage I had was my daughter's age. I've said this on this site before: She was feeling so awful she would have been willing to eat rocks for the rest of her life if it made her feel better. And she did her own cheating when she was away from me a few times, and was completely beaten down, so she is her biggest... -

ARCHIVED Do You Always Feel Bad When Glutened
srall replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I third this. Yuck. I sometimes wonder if my symptoms weren't so severe if I'd be tempted to cheat...but since it's flu symptoms, crippling arthritis, brain fog and a lovely all over blistery rash, I'm never really tempted. But OMG...at the very least I'd do a nice chicago style pizza. Taco Bell. Ewww. -

ARCHIVED Explaining Celiac To People Without Talking About Poop?
srall replied to colfax's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also have pictures of my rash on my phone, and before and after pics of my 8 year old with her various rashes (hives and white pimply bumps) as well as her deep sunken eyes with black circles, scabs all over her mouth and lips and dried brittle thinning hair (she was 7 at the time). In 2 years I've only had one "friend" who pushed me so hard that I whipped... -

ARCHIVED Just When I Thought Feeding My 3 Year Old A Gluten And Dairy Free Diet Was Hard Enough
srall replied to Hailiesmom08's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That is tough. My picky eater was diagnosed gluten sensitive at age 7. (BTW, I hate "gluten sensitive"...how about we thought she had cancer until she was diagnosed? A little more than "sensitive." But I digress...) Your daughter is still pretty new to the diet. I noticed that eventually my daughter started trying things she would never had tried... -
I didn't ever comment on your last thread, but I read through it and the responses. I agree with Irish Heart. You have your answer. You are gluten intolerant. That is not food poisoning. That is exactly the response my mom had when she was accidentally given a wheat tortilla in a restaurant, and even now she's not convinced it wasn't food poisoning...

ARCHIVED Still Angry Sometimes After 2 Years
srall replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Same with my daughter. She is 8 and is actually quickly outgrowing her clothes and shoes. Expensive, but I'm so happy. She's so much more mellow and happy gluten free. So am I, come to think of it. Also, thanks for not backing down. So often I just ignore the naysayers, but it's important that those of us who are self diagnosed are heard.
