ARCHIVED Anyone Feel Like A Full Time Chef?!
srall replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My full time job seems to be shopping for food, cooking from scratch, and cleaning the kitchen. Other parts of my life are suffering. But it used to be in reverse. I was scrambling to get things done, and would grab a piece of "whatever" to eat for lunch or dinner. So I know I'm eating the way I'm supposed to. Luckily this summer my 8 year old daughter... -

ARCHIVED Do You Aim For Gluten Free Or Completely Grain Free?
srall replied to ErinP's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I aim to be grain free, but a couple of times while out to eat I've eaten a small amount of rice. I felt a little "jointy" (my word for sore joints) the next day. I'd like to keep rice as an option for when we're traveling, but I don't eat it at home. Going grain free was the final hurdle in my diet (and nuts too I am discovering). My joint pain and fatigue... -

ARCHIVED Could Some Corn Intolerant People Help Me?
srall replied to Newtoitall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
My corn reaction is very similar to my wheat reaction, except I get very itchy skin as well. So, extreme abdominal cramping, brain fog, joint pain. I think it passes more quickly than wheat gluten. Also I don't have severe reactions to trace amounts like eating something made with baking powder, although I avoid this. Whereas gluten I would NEVER eat... -

ARCHIVED How Long Did It Take To Get Off Of Everything?
srall replied to revenant's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I"m in the same boat as EM4G. If something makes me violently ill, like gluten, corn, bananas, I won't touch it. But I know I have inflammation and allergy symptoms with cashews, dairy, caffeine, wine and soy...but I don't really feel like death warmed over when I ingest them so I feel like I'm feeling worse than I should be because I'm weak-willed. It... -

ARCHIVED Awesome Meal In White Bear Lake, Mn!
srall replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Good to know. I had a really good meal last night at M & S grill in Mpls and there's a place called Biagoos (chain?) in Eden Prairie that had a very extensive gluten-free menu. The food wasn't that great though. But the meal at M & S was outstanding. eta: I just realized that my husband and I ate at Manitou Station in Feb. after a friend... -

ARCHIVED Is There A Connection Between Gluten/food Allergies And Adhd/tourette's?
srall replied to Tina76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is not diagnosed ADHD, however I suspect if she were born into a different family she would have been trotted off to the pedi for a formal diagnosis and possibly medication. I have weathered the raging tantrums instead of considering medication. Her pedi did mention putting her on Xanax for her anxiety last fall when we were first trying out... -

				ARCHIVED Headaches & Moody
srall replied to adena's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is also in 2nd grade and I also ditto the above posters' responses. I feel like we have such a delicate balance of having to eat the exact right foods and vitamins or mayhem ensues. We just had a round of tantrums this weekend and I think it's a different brand of vitamins, but now we have to tear the diet down AGAIN and start over. Just today... -

				ARCHIVED Devastated By Thankful
srall replied to gluten free overseas's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sounds like a good supportive doctor. I hope your sons see some relief soon. I believe they will. Very recently there have been a couple of great posts about packed lunches and dinners for kids. I think even going back 3 or 4 pages and you will find it. My great investment was a thermos. So, for example today I'm sending a cream of broccoli soup.... -
My hair has also gotten thicker the longer I've been gluten free. The other thing I finally learned is that it's better for your hair and scalp if you don't wash it very often. Gross but true. If I work out I at least wet it in the shower, but I really only wash 2 times a week. Not sure if this will give your thinning hair an extra boost. I think it...

ARCHIVED Diagnosed 4 Months Ago. Still Lost.
srall replied to Niebr's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was going to say the same thing. In order to make this affordable, you need to cook for yourself. My family pretty much had to give up going out to dinner because the food was never safe (or I was too freaked to trust it) and the food I'm buying my family is very expensive. You didn't say how you were feeling on the processed food. I'm assuming you... -
I didn't do SCD but did go grain free with great results. There were too many things I wasn't tolerant of in the SCD so I guess I modified it somewhat. For me going grain free has been enough. But there are people here who had great success on the diet.

After a year plus of being gluten free, a few months of being grain free, eating 2 eggs every morning and meat 2 to 3 times per day, my cholesterol has dropped 30 points from last year. My triglycerides were so low the machine couldn't read it. I have read for the past year that it's the grains and carbs that raise your cholesterol level, but to see the...

ARCHIVED My Son's Sad Look Upon His Face
srall replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the message hasn't sunk in by now, I don't know what good my post will do, but here goes... Here's a few things my mother passed down to me: Really bad eyesight so I have coke bottle glasses. This problem is taken care of with contact lenses. Really hairy harms and legs for a girl. Razor, and waxing took care of this problem. Gluten intolerance seems... -
It's not just for 9 months. Other women here have posted that their bodies needed up to 2 years to heal before they were able to get pregnant. I'm not really trying to bum you out, but I had secondary infertility (we were able to have one) and it's devastating. I didn't figure out my gluten intolerance until I was 42 and it was just too late. I...

How often do I cheat with gluten? NEVER. I do occasionally cheat with dairy and soy...I wish I didn't, but the reactions are pretty minor next to gluten (and corn). If you are seriously thinking this woman could be the mother of your children be aware that if she's not following a very strict diet she might have infertility issues.

Gluten free was a couple of really bad weeks. I probably was detoxing from processed foods too. Grain free a year later was still a withdrawal, but much easier. By that point my diet was whole unprocessed foods. Good job for keeping your diet clean! I think that'll help.

I sort of agree. I have been on hiring committees where we have two equally qualified people and say one is a mom with young kids and the other is single with no ties, and guess who gets the job. Not legal, not fair, but I know it happens. I'd probably be reluctant to point out in a job interview that I had celiac if I was going to be required to take...

ARCHIVED Questions About Corn Syrup And Cassava
srall replied to dws's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I found especially at the beginning of going gluten free that the other starches and flours bothered me. As for the corn syrup, that is highly concentrated and if you are having problems with corn, corn syrup is going to be a big problem for you. Plus corn syrup is evil even if you don't have problems with it. I haven't heard that corn syrup didn't contain... -

				ARCHIVED Irritated With My Family!
srall replied to RachelisFacebook's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My daughter and I are gluten free and my husband is not. He really doesn't eat our "special" food. But what does drive me crazy is when the neighbor kids come over for snacks and either eat muffins I've made from expensive ingredients for my daughter, or the very expensive Lara bars, bunny snacks etc. It makes me feel so bad for being so stingy, but that... -

ARCHIVED I Admit It, I Can't Control Myself
srall replied to jenngolightly's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It sucks! The one thing this "diet" has made me realize is that it's just better (for me) to completely cut something out of my diet rather than just have a little bit. I had cut out coffee and dairy, and then slowly 2 to 3 cups of coffee with cream has crept back into my diet. I have allergy symptoms and swollen lymph nodes. I know this is a big ol'... -
Well, my suggestion was going to be Outback since that's the only chain I've found that I've had no issues with. It's very expensive for road food and certainly not quick. I guess I'd probably recommend stopping at a supermarket and buying fruit and lunchmeat maybe? And eating in the car or find a picnic area. Thanks for starting this thread though...

My reaction to corn is the exact same response I have to wheat gluten. Except with corn I also get an allergic response like very itchy skin. My daughter gets severe hives. I've tried to cut out all forms of corn. A couple of weeks ago I was making some coconut flour muffins and decided to test baking powder. My daughter and I both came down with...

ARCHIVED My Husband And His Parents Don't Understand/believe In Celiacs
srall replied to Chloe's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's hard to deal with people who are so willfully ignorant. That may never change. Control what you can. Some advice I got on this board when my daughter was first diagnosed (gluten sensitive...I didn't even have a positive blood test or endoscopy to back me up) was to make sure I didn't leave her anywhere alone where someone might try and feed her something... -

ARCHIVED My Youngest Son Is Not Coping At All Now
srall replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Karl, with all due respect, you need some outside help. Neither you, nor your son can EVER eat gluten again. Nobody on this board would ever advise that you feed him even a little bit. You've gotten a lot of great suggestions. If you can't get your son to eat this, I think you need a specialist to work with him. I'm exhausted at the end of the day just... -

ARCHIVED My Youngest Son Is Not Coping At All Now
srall replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have to agree with the other posters. There is tons of gluten free food out there that "normal" people eat. My father was very surprised to visit me last Thanksgiving only to discover that he really liked my food. But I didn't substitute things. I made fish, meat, veggies. My daughter (age 8) and I both found that just switching to the gluten free...
