  1. Just saw it on the forum front page - Nabisco Wheat Thins Plumbago
  2. Dr Fasano will tell you that the best way to tell is to get the endoscopy. I often ask myself the same question. I'm just reluctant to get another endoscopy. I have relied on blood tests, keeping an eye out especially for vitamin absorption (which is better but still on the low end of the range).
  3. Someone just told me about Go Picnic meals today (gopicnic). Wow. This is great. Here's my question though: I do not like to buy things online, so has anyone bought their gluten-free meals at airports (or other places) on a regular basis? If so, where?? For instance, does Atlanta (airport) have them? Thanks!! (And I really need to thank the person...
  4. Hello again, April 2012 - just talked to the person who prepares my tax returns. What he said is: In order to deduct the cost of gluten-free food (and actually it would be the difference between the gluten-free food and regular food), the total costs of one's medical bills would have to be 7.5% of one's salary.
  5. I know this is a very old post, but today (April 6, 2012) I called Pureology before I bought their DryShine Hair Styler (Shine & Control). They said it was gluten free. The ingredients are below. As always, the key is that tocopheryl acetate. It can be derived from wheat, but it may also be derived from something else. Water (Purified), PEG...
  6. Footnote No. 1 was a link to the University of Chicago Celiac site. Nothing specific on a study. No. 2 - Duodenal biopsies at diagnosis were classified as Marsh I in 11, II in 25 and III in 429 cases. After a median 16 months GFD, 38 (8%) patients had histological 'normalization', 300 (65%) had 'remission' with persistent intraepithelial lymphocytosis...
  7. This article was written in a way that made me suspect it is selling something (The Gluten Free Lie?). I didn't spend a lot of time trying to find out what if anything that is. It's just got that feel to it. So, I googled Fasano, I googled Celiac disease, and other things, and could find nothing else about this new research. I did see the NIH study synopsis...
  8. Hi, The friend of mine I mentioned has for the last eight months been suffering through constant - 4 times a day - D and lower abdominal pain (hypogastric region - not inguinal). This pain often wakes her in the middle of the night. She is young, mid-20s. The gastroenterologist scoped her large intestine. What the dr found was nothing that worrisome...
  9. I wanted to pick up on just this part of your answer to the original question. I have a friend who IS woken up by D in the middle of the night. Can you expand on your comment a bit more? I've posted here, trying to get suggestions. My friend does think (as do her drs) that it is IBS. Thanks. Plumbago
  10. I think it happens to a great many people. It does to me. I can't tell really at all. Once I ate Brazilian cheese bread made with wheat, even though it's not supposed to be, for three days straight, about 3 small pieces everyday. If I had symptoms or felt funny, I can't recall. celiac disease is an intolerance, it's not an allergy. Not all reactions are immediate...
  11. Thanks for the two replies so far! I hope to get more. It's especially good to hear from someone in the same age group. Plumbago
  12. You did not tell us what you have been eating. Ie, are you sure you are getting enough fiber? I just posted on a friend of mine with chronic D in this sub topic, and have found the wikipedia entry on irritable bowel syndrome to be chock full of information, not just about IBS. 13. All, I am posting on behalf of a colleague at work, who for the last eight months has been suffering through constant - 4 times a day - D and lower abdominal pain (hypogastric region - not inguinal). This pain often wakes her in the middle of the night. She is young, mid-20s. There is a family history of IBS. She recently went to the gastroenterologist...
  14. At the risk of prolonging this, I would like to say again that I did not consume the box of chocolates. What I was hoping to get into is a discussion about labeling and companies' appetites for the gluten free market. It's possible that Godiva uses gluten machinery and does not decontaminate it. It is also possible that they do not, but they just don't want...
  15. Can you provide the web site of Palmer's? I just googled, and could not find it. But this might be interesting - may contain traces on the Web site but not the package. Would be interesting to know if this complies with the labeling laws. But not to nitpick, the Godiva site says may contain gluten, not 'traces of.' Plumbago
  16. To me, it's total CYA. If you look at the ingredients, there is nothing gluten in them. There is no wheat, barley, there is no "may contain traces of," - nothing. It's only their web site that says that. That's why it makes me say it's total CYA. It's my opinion that food companies just want to opt out so they say (not on the package, mind you) "may...
  17. I have not partaken. I just wanted to see if there was much to be added to the discussion. Off to the office they go. However, I am not convinced that they are not gluten free. What I have been finding is that more and more food processors are just opting out of the game by saying that they 'may' contain gluten. Well it 'may' rain tomorrow. They're...
  18. I've seen many many many posts about good ole Godiva chocolates. I was at a tiny store today. The sales clerk gave me the typical line - that all products may contain gluten. Classic CYA I figured. I bought the Limited Edition Truffles anyway. (And sampled an in-store chocolate which also happens to be in this collection.) I have not opened my box yet. ...
  19. I did not say that the small pox vaccine causes eczema. I began by wondering that if based on what I am reading - that people with eczema should not get the small pox vaccine - is true, what happens to those of us who have eczema but as infants and children got the small pox vaccine? (BTW, I also stated the reasons I've been able to glean for the...
  20. Thanks MM. What I was reading on the 'net was that there is a key peptide missing in those with eczema -- The lack of a certain peptide in the skin of people with atopic dermatitis--the most common form of eczema--may explain why they are at high risk of adverse reactions to the smallpox vaccine, report scientists in the February Journal of Immunology. The...
  21. Not posting under the DH forum because of course eczema and DH are different. But wikipedia has just informed me that there is a strong link between people who have celiac disease and eczema. I'm doing a lot of reading on eczema lately - it's amazing how little will there seems to be to experiment and advance the yardsticks on this one. But oh well. Apparently...
  22. I used the same recipe tonight and they are good. Now I'm thinking about storge. Should I leave them our or refrigerate? I hate that idea of refrigeration I must say. Let me add one thing: I bet adding some sausage crumbles might not be a bad idea. ? Plumbago
  23. My thought is: what is your diagnosis? On what basis are you being put onto this diet? What did the doctor say? Your system is in overdrive? What does that mean? Why is it in overdrive? Plumbago
  24. Some time ago, I dedicated two or three weekends to learning more about the structure of Celiac disease and its physiology or pathophysiology if at all possible. The latter is ongoing and more difficult than the former because it involves proteins, antibodies, enzymes, antigens, tight junctions etc...It's just more challenging. But one resource among a few...
  25. A couple days ago, someone posted on the DC Celiac list and then linked to her blog, that she had gotten cc'ed by Amy's tamales verdes (also a favorite of mine). As what she labelled proof, she posted a photo of herself with the gluten belly. I will probably heed her (and others') warning about Amy's and not purchase it anymore. It would be good if they could...
