  1. Thanks Diane and Missy's Mom. My doctor simply told me to eat 5 fruits and 5 vegetables a day, a protein with low fat per meal, plus a healthy fat to help me absorb my vitamins. He told me not eat potatoes because they are "empty" calories. That was just about all the information I started with when I left the Dr's office to go gluten free. But...
  2. My weight has varied a lot over the years. I wore a pair of size 10 jeans from 8th grade until age 25. Sometimes they were far too big, sometimes they were very tight. Since then in my late 20's I dropped suddenly to a size 4 and about 109 pounds (I'm 5'5). Then I gained to a size 12 and lost back to a size 4 in my early 30's. In the last couple years I jumped...
  3. I like the Kind bars the best. The cranberry is a nice mix of sweet and nutty.
  4. Thank you. Your parents sound like mine. I think my mom is going to go gluten free, she said something about New Years being a good time to start. And I told her about the apple sauce and banana so she can use them to to take her meds. Thank you for telling my about your MIL, I'm so sorry.
  5. I've noticed a lot of Celiacs have gotten rid of their old baking pans for fear of contamination. My oven has been out since Spring and was not working consistently for the last three years. For the most part my baking pans have not been used in the last three years. If I scrub each pan throughly should they be safe? I ask because we had just bought new pans...
  6. The problem is when she went in to see her GI Dr she just saw the nurse who seemed somewhat clueless about Celiac Disease. And her MD didn't know she had diverticulitis (she's had it since the 1970's) and when she mentioned diverticulitis he said to her, "No, you don't want to have that, you'd have to have a Colostomy and wear a bag for the rest of your life...
  7. Congratulations! That is fantastic. I'm very happy for you. You're an inspiration. I stopped one class short of graduation and when I returned they told me my catalog year had ended and I'd have to take two semesters of new classes. As difficult a time as I was having in (and paying for) the one class I gave up, but you are giving me hope. Thank you.
  8. Thank you Peter for the facts. I greatly appreciate your wisdom. Karen, at the time they told her she would never be able to eat anything but baby food but after two years of baby food she found a GI Doctor who slowly reintroduced all foods back into her diet. Right now they have told her to stay away from whole corn as it is difficult to digest.
  9. 36 years ago my mothers OBGYN not knowing what he was doing removed her Cecum, Ascending Colon and half of her Transverse Colon. He then attached her small intestines to the remaining Transverse Colon. This month when she went to her Gastro-Intestinal Dr. I asked her to ask him if she might have Gluten Intolerance. Which they could test for with a blood test...
  10. At one time my Dr told me to take Cerefolin NAC but that was before I went gluten free. Sorry I'm not more help. I'm sure some of the others here can give you some useful info.
  11. That's a good idea. Thank you for sharing it.
  12. I was diagnosed Nov 2nd. Just in time for the holidays. I got glutenated at the very first family get together and was sick in less than an hour and remained sick 3 days. I have worked in restaurants and seen the look on the cooks face when he was told of an unusual dietary request. I know that cook said, "it's fine" and handed it to the waitress not...
  13. Hi, I was just "diagnosed" November 2nd so I know exactly were you are. My Doctor didn't run the tests he just told me that for a long time he has suspected this was my problem. I'm glad he finally told me. He told me to go on the diet for a month and see how I felt. I feel a whole lot better. Better than I have in years. Regarding lactose, about a week ago...
  14. I was diagnosed November 2nd so you have been living with this longer than I have. The first trip to the grocery store I got a tension headache from reading all the labels and having to put so many items back because I wasn't "sure" about them. I suspect I'll breakdown at some point but I haven't yet, could be because my Doctor gave me anti-depressants with...
  15. Barnes and Noble and the local used bookstore. Thank you for your response.
  16. This may be really silly but the majority of the time when I go to any big bookstore I suddenly have to race to the bathroom. I used to think it was all in my head but since discovering I have a gluten problem I've started wondering if there is some sort of gluten in the air in these places. I thought maybe the glue in the older books but after reading this...
  17. Thanks for this info. Now I know a handy local restaurant where I can safely eat a meal with my friends and family.
  18. I'm 36, before I was diagnosed one month ago I weighed 171 now I weight 153. I was always a size 8 (ages 14-26) until about nine years ago when I suddenly dropped to a size 2 then I gained to a size 12 then I dropped to a size 4 then I gained to a size 14. I used to walk all the time but since I started getting sick I've been less active, now I finally feel...
  19. Good for you! Reading your story has made me feel less alone. Thank you for sharing. I'm just learning about gluten free cooking. I enjoy my cooking but my mom says it's bland maybe eating healthier food is making my taste buds more sensitive.
  20. So yet another explanation as to how I got gluten today. I never thought about the stuffing being inside the Turkey. This is my 1st Gluten Free Thanksgiving. (I've been gluten free 3 weeks)I've learned for all future family dinners to bring my food in a cooler! Today was great as far as family but the food situation was a total nightmare. My family is 1...
  21. I was just diagnosed on November 2nd. At the big family Thanksgiving dinner I was told I was being "too picky". Pretty sure I got some gluten at dinner. It was either from the shortening they used in the green beans (I had no idea some people put shortening in green beans) or the crumbs left by an uncle who used the same utensil for all of the food. He was...
