  1. I am surprised to read a comment like this. One of the most amazing things about this forum is that everyone is so supportive. I was a little chicken to admit at first that I don't have the test results to firmly back up any gluten diagnosis for myself but I have gotten so much support from people here I have started to think people who are intolerant of...
  2. Just thought I'd post this excerpt from the Wall Street Journal article on wheat free eating, published Nov 1, 2005. So Whole Foods Bakehouse is ok up to 50 ppm. Since some people on this thread have reacted at what appears to be less than that amount, I would be concerned about eating their products. I don't eat them at this point because all the...
  3. Here is a link to some recipes. I was pretty intrigued - if I find any coconut flour, I'll definitely get some. Open Original Shared Link Stephanie
  4. I agree, too, Beverly, it's just so hard to be convinced that something labeled gluten free would be the culprit. That is why I think it's so cool they validated your experience. Definitely, if anyone gets sick on Amy's, they should get in touch with them. At least we know at this point. Stephanie
  5. Well, that's a bummer. Thanks for posting the response, Kaiti! Stephanie
  6. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I think it's cool they are doing all this, despite the fact that it happened. I mean, that of course is not cool and I'm sorry you and anyone else has gotten sick from their products. But at least now they will be looking into it more. That is what is cool about their response. They actually care. I think I'll hold off on getting...
  7. I know! What was I thinking??? Love the fruit Mentos... maybe one day, I'll have some again... Mmmmmm..... The Fresh-Maker. Stephanie
  8. It's really hard to eat at the fair. At my fair there is one booth that sells salad, but that is highly unusual, and the dressing would be suspect, also the possibility of having croutons in the salad or deli meats with wheat. And who goes to the fair to eat salad, anyway? It is hard, because I want to eat all the stuff that everyone else eats when I go...
  9. Little story - 9 years ago I was in France for this language program and was staying with this family. There was also a kid from Amsterdam staying with them, he was about 10 years younger than me. I told him about when I was 10, I travelled with my mom and grandma to Europe and we went to Amsterdam. I remember on the train this Dutch couple gave me Mentos...
  10. Hey Floridanative - are you taking B complex supplements? That will turn your pee Gatorade yellow (very descriptive!). I have been having bladder issues this past year but I think it has something to do with possible endometriosis. Coincidentally, this has started since I went gluten-free. Stephanie
  11. I'm replying to the protein part of this thread... A protein powder I like is rice protein powder. I don't like whey and soy is just not one of the things I like to taste. (edamame excluded). Organic Food Bar makes bars that are Gluten-free Casein-free. They don't have high protein in them, but usually 14g a bar. Also some low-glycemic carbs (agave...
  12. I get more eggs and boil some up. Then I can have a generic salad and put eggs on it and make it more filling. I also buy those small cans of salmon (like the pull top tuna cans) and use those on salad. Or cheese and avocado. Leftovers, which I used to hate, I love now. I have found the best way to make sure I'll eat my leftovers is to freeze them. If...
  13. Wow, that's amazing! You should be a gluten detector, Beverly! I wonder at what level I'd notice? That's interesting. I am really impressed with their response. I would like to know if there is a way to tell batches, so if I was to buy some at the store I could avoid them. I was thinking of stocking up soon for my new job - kind of an eat lunch at your...
  14. We were at the Grocery Outlet (it's a store) the other day and they had a Snickers Fun Pack, that had about 6 different kinds of candy bar that company makes, including Milky Way Dark. I was tempted to try one of those, I don't usually eat sugar these days but have read the Milky Way Dark is gluten-free. The label on the bag though didn't break down ingredients...
  15. Oh yeah, the "bless their heart" clause is a great thing. It really helps when someone is driving you nuts! IE - My coworker can't possibly eat without smacking her lips all the time, bless her heart... My boss always yells when he gets mad, bless his heart... yadda yadda yadda Love that one! Stephanie
  16. Jen - tell him it's not as bad as it seems. After they got done with my husband, I thought he'd want to go home and sit on ice, but instead we went out to dinner and drank margaritas! I think we were both glad it was done. Anyway, woo-hoo! Go men! Stephanie
  17. Good timing - I just made my first loaf last night. I bought it over 6 months ago but finally hauled out my bread machine. It IS awesome! I was emailing with Anna today, too, because on her website, all of the mixes have potato starch in them, but the one I made last night didn't. She looked into it and the regular one does not have potato starch - the website...
  18. Hey Turtle - Fortunately I'm not in danger of getting pregnant. But barrier methods were problematic for me. I have a tilted uterus and they couldn't fit me for a diaphragm. And condoms are ok, but rough on me, spermacide seems to give me allergies. Anyway, if not one thing, another. I was really glad my husband didn't want kids (he has a lot of weird...
  19. Wow, lots of replies. I'm not wanting to use BC for pregnancy control, my husband had a vasectomy when we got back from the honeymoon (I don't want to ever have kids... I knew when I was 12 and my mom got her tubes tied - I asked her then! She laughed and told me to wait until I was 30...) Just for endometriosis purposes. I have been using progesterone...
  20. Hi - From what I understand, if you have two of these genes, you got one from each parent. That makes sense to me, but what I am not clear on is does anyone only have one of these sorts of HLA genes? Because everyone I've seen post here has two, though not always one of the two Celiac genes. I haven't been able to figure out what that means. Back...
  21. Thanks for the info. I get rashes about half the time from regular band aids so I am not sure if this is a good idea for me. What I like in theory about the patch and the ring (Nuvaring) is that they are transdermal and don't require your liver to process them. But I didn't like the experience of the Nuvaring at all, and am wondering about the patch. I...
  22. Does anyone know if those stick on birth control patches are gluten free? I know we've discussed Band Aids, etc, but was just wondering if anyone knows about medical patches (I guess there would be a question about nicotine patches and pain relief patches, too). Stephanie
  23. Hi - It looks like your husband has two gluten sensitive genes - DQ2, one of the two Celiac genes, and DQ5 (or DQ1, subtype 5). This second it technically considered DQ1, for all intents and purpose and has been associated with gluten ataxia and neurological reactions to gluten. It's good your husband doesn't seem to have any malabsorption or...
  24. Hi Rachel - I just recently got my results back from my biopsy, or biopsies (had both colonoscopy and endoscopy done) and I was a little depressed about the results being fine, too. I mean, I expected this - one year gluten-free, if I had any damage at all would be really weird, but I thought there were other things to be found. Anyway, I know you...

    ARCHIVED Wary...

HAHAHA! Well, other people have already confirmed, yes that is one of the two. It is the less common of the two, but still a Celiac gene. I have almost the same gene and have been told by Dr. Fine it can act just like it. I have to agree. It is more common of a Mediterranean background than Northern European (as DQ2 is). That said, my family is 3/4th...
