The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
domesticactivist replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My sweetie made roast duck, salad, and honey glazed carrots with mint. She also made kale chips, but those are for the kids to take to their day camp tomorrow, not for me! -
ARCHIVED Need Ideas For Summer
domesticactivist replied to Juliebove's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Have you run all the ideas on this list by your daughter, or are you saying she wouldn't like them based on past experience? The elder care facilities I've been to have air conditioning. Are you sure none of them do? Also, I'd sign her up for a couple day camps whether she likes the idea of it or not. If she's not depressed now, she certainly will be... -
ARCHIVED Odd Benefits Of Going Gluten Free
domesticactivist replied to Cattknap's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm REALLY hoping that happens to me! So far I'm pretty sure my mosquito reactions are much better - I don't have any yet and I have seen a couple out. The true test will come when they are out in full force again. I used to get such bad reactions. My legs are covered in scars from them. Once I counted 54 bites just on the front of my shin and I couldn't... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Feel Like A Full Time Chef?!
domesticactivist replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here's the 40 Hour Work Week Challenge post I mentioned. Comments are always welcome, of course. I will cross-post comments on the blog here to our real blog, too, unless expressly asked not to. -
The 40 Hour Work Week Challenge
domesticactivist posted a blog entry in The Liberated Kitchen, redux
I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. A lot of time. I think fully half of my personal Facebook posts are food related. One of my friends recently commented, "Do you ever get out of the kitchen?" To which I replied, "Sometimes I go to the bathroom!" I was joking. Kind of. Being a homemaker is my full time job. An apron is my uniform. My job responsibilities... -
ARCHIVED Super Over-Reactions To Novacaine, Etc.
domesticactivist replied to IrishHeart's topic in Super Sensitive People
I don't have celiac but I'm also very sensitive to medications and over the years have really minimized their use. It seems like if there's a rare side effect, I'll get it, and half the time medications don't have the intended effect on me. My dad is the same way. I have a friend with grave's disease who also reacts very strongly to novacaine, btw. -
ARCHIVED Fats, Calories And Celiac Kids
domesticactivist replied to SilverSlipper's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is also extremely small for her age - she is 12, 4' 4 1/4" tall, and 56 lbs. She has NEVER placed on the growth chart, and has dropped away from it. She was also a very picky eater - preferring fresh vegetables and fruits and anything full of sugar. She was actually vegetarian from ages 4-11 as well. We did a full panel test for celiac, which... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Feel Like A Full Time Chef?!
domesticactivist replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I used to be a single mom and work full time, so I'm well aware of the difference between actually doing something all the time and pretending for a week. I used to get really pissed off whenever someone said they were a "single mom for a week" because their husband was out of town - especially if they were a SAHM. So... The assumptions you have made here... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Feel Like A Full Time Chef?!
domesticactivist replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My partner does! She's actually about to do a "40 hour work week challenge" and blog it next week. She's going to pretend to have a regular 9 hour a day plus commute job and only cook in the off hours. This should be interesting, since she's ALWAYS in the kitchen making messes for me to clean up -
ARCHIVED What's For Breakfast Today?
domesticactivist replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I had a bowl of pureed carrot and kale chicken soup with homemade greek-style yogurt on top. Also, a cup of ginger tea. -
ARCHIVED Help! How Do We Deal With Camp?!
domesticactivist replied to Angie M's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm glad the camp is willing to cooperate. However, I would want to meet with the cook a few days before my child's camp session to educate them/give them a refresher on avoiding cross-contamination. -
ARCHIVED Blogging Advice Wanted
domesticactivist replied to sb2178's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm avidly following this thread because I have a blog, too (linked from my profile). We're thinking of changing our main website's home page so that it is not the blog, because it seems like it's too hard for people to clearly understand what we *do* and what our services are. I want to have teasers to various recent blogs from the home page as well. If... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Bloating Is So Bad
domesticactivist replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
20 ppm means 20 parts per million. So that's really a very, very small amount! Look on my posts on the blog and you'll find a post about dairy as well. If you are used to eating store-bought quick and easy things, it will definitely be a HUGE change for you. The GAPS diet is not a really easy thing to do, though it is simple. But it is a lot of work... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
domesticactivist replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Tonight we had a sea food medley (frozen) in a lemony broth with herbs, steamed broccoli, and salad from the garden, with homemade ranch dressing. The kids were still hungry so they ate beef patties, too. -
If you want to be able to get a diagnosis of celiac disease or at all trust a negative result DO NOT GO GLUTEN FREE YET!!! Many people find they become more sensitive to gluten after they go off it, and the 6 weeks of eating 4 slices of bread a day necessary to hope for accurate results would be unbearable after they've gone gluten-free for a while. You...

ARCHIVED Please Help Bloating Is So Bad
domesticactivist replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry to hear you're hurting so much. It sounds to me like you have discovered processed crap is no good for you! Truly, I don't believe those products are actually good for anyone. Also, in the USA the rule is 20 ppm - some are definitely sensitive at that level. And don't get me started on "naturally gluten-free" foods that are processed on lines shared... -
ARCHIVED Classrooms And Sanitizer
domesticactivist replied to SilverSlipper's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is a very common problem. You need to educate the staff at your child's school about the need for *all* the children to wash up with soap and water before and after eating. They can transfer the gluten to the tables, chairs, toys, door handles, each other, etc. They also need to understand that just because he doesn't have an anaphylactic reaction or... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Order Direct To Save $ On Things Like Pasta Or Baking Goods?
domesticactivist replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We buy direct from local farmers and buy in bulk from Azure Standard and Hummingbird through a local buying club. This allows us to get high quality organic foods cheaper. -
ARCHIVED Need Ideas For Summer
domesticactivist replied to Juliebove's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It sounds like your daughter is in for a long summer. At her age dance was my life, too, and being out for even a week was a terrifying prospect. I really hope that she can get past the boredom and the disappointment and turn it into a memorable, positive experience. That is really up to HER, not YOU, and it will help if you can remember that as you undertake... -

ARCHIVED What's For Breakfast Today?
domesticactivist replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I had cauliflower cooked in pork drippings, with fresh avacado sliced on top. Ginger tea to drink. (just hot water with fresh ginger in it). Everyone else had fried eggs, but my son also had a leftover pork chop and avacado. -

Where in WA are you? We're in Portland so if it's Vancouver maybe our kids could meet up. My daughter is 12, too. I have ideas but they'll have to wait for the morning. -
ARCHIVED Do You Aim For Gluten Free Or Completely Grain Free?
domesticactivist replied to ErinP's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Buckwheat is delicious and we really liked the pie crusts we made with it and the pancakes, too. HOWEVER - it "glutened" us horribly. I don't know if it was cross-contaminated or was just causing us problems all on its own, but it's definitely on my list of things to watch out for. -
ARCHIVED "cross-Reacting"?
domesticactivist replied to BreninMA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
First off - are you sure they were totally gluten-free? If so, how did you know? Secondly - it's very possible you were just reacting to something in the products you ate. Many people have more than one sensitivity. The reaction you describe (hives) sounds more like an IgE allergy to me. My son is celiac but then also has a corn allergy. That's not... -
Both my parents and one grandparent had to cut it out due to heart issues being caused by it. I realized on my own, way back in high school it wasn't right for me - heightened my anxiety and didn't keep me awake, actually made me all foggy. I drank it in extreme moderation (so yummy) for some time as an adult, but realized even one cup a week would...
