I just made a post about how to really eliminate cross-contamination from your home. Here it is! Have you done everything listed there? If not, it really could be cc. Otherwise (or in addition, actually), definitely look into other potential causes like fructose malabsorbtion, SIBO, etc. I found I had terrible constipation and other issues when gluten...

ARCHIVED I Don't Think I Am Doing This gluten-free Diet Correctly
domesticactivist replied to Tina76's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
By the way - I noticed you didn't have a diagnosis. If you are intending on seeking a diagnosis don't go gluten-free yet! You need to be eating LOTS of gluten to get a positive diagnosis! -
ARCHIVED I Don't Think I Am Doing This gluten-free Diet Correctly
domesticactivist replied to Tina76's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sounds like you *know* what the problem is - you haven't really eliminated gluten from your life! It's not selfish or wrong to get your own condiments! It's absolutely critical to your health. I've written a blog post about how to make your house 100% gluten-free. With very careful family members, I do think it's possible to stay healthy with shared... -
Going gluten-free is harder than it looks. The pesky stuff is everywhere! Many people who are intolerant or have a wheat allergy can get away with not really worrying about trace amounts of contamination. But if you are going gluten-free because of an autoimmune problem like Open Original Shared Link, it's imperative that you get away from even the slightest...

ARCHIVED Kicking In My Sleep
domesticactivist replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My partner had this problem. She also improved gluten-free then it came back. We're pretty sure it's due to mg deficiency. It resolves when she remembers to take her concentrace mineral drops. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Struggling (Ended Up Being Pretty Long Sorry)
domesticactivist replied to mamabear272's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey there. I'm sorry you're having a rough time - but it's good you're finally getting some answers. Each person's body is different, and you might be in for a long road of healing. If you wrap your mind around it just the right way it won't be so bad. It *is* hard to be on a restricted diet. It's especially hard at first - when you aren't feeling better... -
ARCHIVED Help! How Do We Deal With Camp?!
domesticactivist replied to Angie M's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh, and I would not trust ANYTHING the camp provides to be safe. If your kids are going to eat the fruit, they should wash it (and their hands) thoroughly immediately before eating it. -
ARCHIVED Help! How Do We Deal With Camp?!
domesticactivist replied to Angie M's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is going to sleep away camp for a week this summer at the same camp I take the kids for weekends with their Camp Fire Club. We had a lot of drama about bringing food at our last club weekend, but it turned out great. For summer camp, I have arranged with the camp to allow us to send all her own food. They seemed very aware of how to accommodate... -
ARCHIVED At A Loss For Recovery - Guidance Needed
domesticactivist replied to Syl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The compostable "plastic" utensils are typically mostly corn, which is a problem for us, so I thought I'd throw that out there, too. -

ARCHIVED Local Produce Etc Through Our Rural Resourses
domesticactivist replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We buy from farm stands in the summer. Other times of the year we buy direct from several farmers, sometimes through our buying club. Buying clubs are really cool - members arrange buys with local farmers and then people in the club sign up for how much of it they want. The drop is handled by the person who set it up. We also have an Azure Standard and Hummingbird... -
ARCHIVED Nightshades And Corn Starch In Hellman's Mayo.
domesticactivist replied to GFinDC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mayo is super-duper easy to make. It just takes a few minutes. I'll get Kelsy to post a blog on it eventually. In the meantime, google mayonnaise recipes and I'm sure you'll find a good one. -
ARCHIVED Weight Gain On gluten-free Diet
domesticactivist replied to Almendra's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think it's a combination of things others have suggested. Emotional eating could be part of it, but aren't a lot of the people who go gluten-free celiacs who had malabsorption problems and may have been underweight to start with? So I think some people are gaining weight they need. Some people are eating the same amount out of habit and gaining weight... -
ARCHIVED Hit A Ceiling For Recovery, Maybe Even Taken A Step Back
domesticactivist replied to UpbeatPete's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The potatoes could be a problem. Nightshades are associated with joint pain. We avoid potatoes for that reason (son is celiac with joint problems) and also because they are very starchy and we avoid all starchy vegetables due to the sugar. I am not celiac but have neurological problems... or, I should say, *had* neurological problems. Tingling hands, body... -
You're welcome! I have a post coming up about traveling on GAPS (haven't finished it yet), and if you look on my archives I have some posts of what we brought to eat on short trips. I hope it helps! The most important thing with GAPS is to get in a rhythm of preparing the basics like stock, yogurt, sauerkraut, defrosting meat, soaking nuts, so that you'll...

ARCHIVED How Long To See Improvement After Eliminating Food?
domesticactivist replied to sreese68's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I do understand not wanting to bother with GAPS - it's a lot of work to figure it all out. If you can make improvements some other way by all means do it. Even just taking some of the principles will probably help - to e the most important are eliminating cross contamination, eat whole, organic foods, restoring the presence of healthy bacteria in the gut... -
OK, I did it! You can read my post about how to get started on the GAPS Diet here:

The GAPS diet is a major change for most people. We get asked how to get started all the time, so we've finally worked out the basics of what you need to do to be ready for success. We were already gluten-free, into cooking from scratch, and all about whole, organic, locally sourced foods when we started. Even so, it was a huge challenge for us! You can...

ARCHIVED Child Behaviour On Gluten
domesticactivist replied to Mummyto3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Our son has behaviour problems when his seasonal allergies or other allergies act up. He gets hyper, bumps into things, talks a blue streak and generally drives us crazy. He also experiences severe dyslexia and inability to focus. When he gets glutened he gets joint and bone pain, stomach aches, extreme brain fog and fatigue. You can imagine the lovely... -
Hi Laura, My family also has benefited greatly from the GAPS diet and I've posted a lot about it on this site. I also have a blog post on here with recommended reading and a bit about the difference between GAPS and SCD. GAPS is not the same as Paleo, but it has some things in common. Paleo is based on the idea that we should eat what humans evolved to...

ARCHIVED Eating Gluten-Free Is NOT a Trend - The Stir
domesticactivist replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Agreed. It's definitely trendy around here but of course there are people it's absolutely critical for. Whether there are gluten-free products and restaurants around is beside the point for someone it truly matters for. I wouldnt dream of feeding my son from anything but a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, and I always ask specific questions before trusting... -
Enterolab: A Scientist's Viewpoint
domesticactivist commented on Skylark's blog entry in Skylark's Blog
Thanks for your explanation. I, too, had wondered about the lack of scientific papers published on the stool tests. I considered doing these tests as they are less invasive, but decided I wouldn't be able to figure out how to best interpret the results and didn't want to spend the money. I got genetic testing done for the kids by [url="http://www.kimballgenetics... -
ARCHIVED A Scary Situation

domesticactivist replied to TexasJenn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hey there! It's great you are starting off right, by cleaning and looking for cross contamination sources. I agree with whoever said it's much easier to be safe in a gluten free house. Get the kids' bloodwork done before taking them off gluten, though! You should check out crockpot365 for lots of easy recipes for the crock pot. Focus on veggies and meats...
