    I think this is the case with my son. My husband was dx with celiac disease over 2 yrs ago - he was very ill. Only through learning and reading did I realise that my son had some of the symptoms of celiac disease - but in no way was he as ill as hubby. Biopsies were positive for my son - but I'd have never asked him to get tested if it wasn't for my hubby...

    Hubby is a biopsy proven coeliac but I think he is in this category although he's never actually had his genes tested. I'd bet he has DQ2 and DQ1. Looking back in the years before his dx of celiac disease his predominant symptoms were never GI ones.     I'm not sure how long you've been gluten-free but if you have cut gluten out for any length of time it will skew your blood panel for celiac disease and possibly give you a 'false negative'. Regarding the sigmoidoscopy and barium enema - it will not matter whether your eating gluten or not. The sigmoidoscopy is looking at your large bowel (coeliac affects...

    You were right!! You need to keep eating gluten until after your biopsies otherwise any damage in your bowel could heal and you will get a 'false negative' result. Once you go gluten-free it might be a good idea (good question!) Some people feel better immediately after cutting out gluten - and for others it takes a while.Everyones...

    Although my husband was anaemic at the time of diagnosis my son wasn't. Both his haemoglobin and ferratin stores were at normal levels - so it is possible!!

    That's interesting! I'm not a coeliac but this summer( which was particularily hot ) I really suffered with heat rash (I am quite fair skinned though - don't know if that's an added risk?) Once the bumps were up I found the only thing to make them go quicker was to use talcum powder on the affected areas ( it's the sweat trapped under a blocked pore...

    Hi Sally, It sounds as if your GI covered everthing and hope you gain some answers from the biopsies. As you are also prepared for a negative it may be possible you still gain relief going gluten-free - even without 'classic' coeliac damage. Good Luck!

    My first thought is did your son have a Total IgA Serum done in his coeliac blood panel? If you suffer from a condition called IgA deficiency you don't produce enough of a certain antibody and it can give you a 'False Negative' on bloods for celiac disease. That said my husband also had negative bloods for celiac disease (no IgA deficiency though...

    That's a great idea and I wish that were so -then my son might have got dx much earlier. Although in the UK Downs kids are routinely screened for Thyroid disease not Coeliac? If you add to the fact that as it turned out my son's Dad also had celiac disease he was a definite candidate for screening.
