  1. This raises the point I asked on Jane's other thread. Since gluten is the underlying mechanism of DH, if she has been gluten-free for a year, wouldn't the skin biopsy be invalid? No one seemed to answer that question, maybe because no one saw it after I wrote it, but you raise it here and Prickly says it too and it does make me wonder. IgA antibodies...
  2. Yeah, we cried, too--for joy...as I walked on the beach. At one point, I could not walk the length of my driveway or get in/out of the shower without assistance. I had such extreme exhaustion from anemia, shortness of breath, vertigo, ataxia and horrid joint, nerve and muscle pain from loss of muscle mass. I was told to get a scooter, take medications, live...
  3. True, true, and very true. Your body is trying to "re-boot" itself. It is my understanding that a glutening causes an inflammatory response that can take up to 3 months to resolve. (and from my experience, it seems longer ) People who say "a little bit won't hurt" have no freakin idea what they are taking about.
  4. The calendar may be ending, but I am betting you can still plan your Super Bowl Party for 2013. In the same room as you "consummate" ??....yikes... good luck with that one.
  5. Since there are 88 more years to go in this century, I'd have to wait a bit before I say that they are the GREATEST ..... but I DO like them!! You did not provide a "possibly, let's give it time" vote button. and I also like: City With No Children The Suburbs
  6. IELs are intraepithelial lymphocytes. A wide variety of immunologic stimuli can elevate intraepithelial lymphocyte numbers. Among the other common associations (besides gluten/active celiac) are enteric infection, autoimmune disease, use of drugs like NSAIDs, and gastric Helicobacter infection. (h pylori) Maybe you have an infection of some kind? Having...
  7. Well, at least now you know it is NOT DH, but it does not answer the question of what it IS then. (and I suspect, this test may be invalid as you have been gluten-free for a year!) And it does not exclude a gluten intolerance. Jane, did you call and ask for an explanation of the biopsy report? What do the words say--maybe someone here can help...
  8. The burning nearly drove me mad. It was exactly like a bad sunburn--that is how I described it to everyone! I felt like I had hot liquid running through my blood and my skin and scalp were bright red and peeling. It was really weird. It has calmed down a LOT. But, now, if I eat too many sals, histamine-type foods, amines, sulfites, MSG, food additives...
  9. Holy smokes! I was severely sleep-deprived for 2 years (while very ill from un- diagnosed celiac and still consuming gluten ) and was about as whipped up and manic as can be, but I didn't curse entire cultures and wish that people who take medicines erode from the inside out, express a desire to poison the crops of all the countries of the world and...
  10. Tart indeed! I added a bit of stevia to it. Otherwise, it is just like sour cream to me. Good on taters! Mango is one of my favorite fruits EVER. I ate so many of them in FLa last month (along with other sals )and I may have overloaded my system. When I get glutened ---or overdo the sals, etc.-- I BURN in my skin. From head to toe--a deep...
  11. YYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY---I am doing the happy dance for you!!!!!
  12. Hi mamajchis, I think you may have meant to say gluten free?( If you were celiac- free you wouldn't want to be hanging around with us. ) There is more to being gluten free than just avoiding wheat. Gluten is also in rye, barley and cross-contaminated oats. Cheers, IH
  13. I am not sure why you still have DH if you are gluten-free. That is perplexing. (and maddening for those of you who still suffer from it, despite your dietary compliance, I am sure ) I did read this: "A strict gluten-free diet is the only treatment for the underlying celiac disease. Even with a gluten-free diet, dapsone or sulfapyridine therapy may...
  14. Villi heal on their own when the gluten is eliminated from the diet, in the case of celiac disease. There is no other treatment or medicine. Do you have Celiac? An endoscopy does not "see" villous atrophy. A biopsy is done to assess villous atrophy. Because you have been gluten-free for four months, a biopsy for diagnosing celiac disease at this...
  15. Frozen shrimp (you'll have to make cocktail sauce) The Legal Seafood ones are awesome! Sounds good; Karen will pick me up!
  16. 18. or if your parents are visiting.
  17. I'm tapped out of ideas! Let us know what happens, Jane!
  18. Theory of What Causes DH There is within the immune system a genetically-based sensitivity to gluten. When gluten is in the diet, the body makes IgA. The IgA or the Iga-gluten (antigen-antibody) complex circulates in the blood stream. The IgA or the complex settles in the skin causing the intense reaction labeled dermatitis herpetiformis. Celiac Sprue...
  19. Here is what I found: List of causes of Dermatitis herpetiformis Following is a list of causes or underlying conditions that could possibly cause Dermatitis herpetiformis includes: Celiac disease To research the causes of Dermatitis herpetiformis, consider researching the causes of these diseases that may be similar, or associated with...
  20. Very wise of you to investigate !! I wonder-- did the doctor say that being on a gluten-free diet would affect the skin biopsy at all??
  21. I think we are all on the same page here. No one is arguing about the Celiac/DH connection --we were just discussing it---but none of us can find any other causes for it. I can keep looking. I gave you the answers I could find (see above) from the people who are considered experts. They all say "DH is the skin manifestation of Celiac." ...
  22. I hear you. I tried all kinds of elimination diets. Nothing in particular worked for long and I was miserable when I felt deprived. I have one rule now: If something makes me feel lousy, I don't eat it. No rhyme or reason as to why I do well for a few days or so, then don't. Still have rotten joint/nerve/muscle pain and occasional migraines...
  23. The Thyroid is a tricky organ. I am delighted mine is "behaving" now. It was wonky for a long time. I should clarify I did not really eat the beans (I was avoiding legumes) or lentils (I do not like lentils at all). The list was more of a reference for her. Soy is out for me so I just had NO milk at all....bummer. IH does not like black...
