We Need To Start A Thread On Stupid Stuff Doctors Say!
IrishHeart replied to mushroom's topic in Doctors
Sadly, this is what they do--give antibiotics for every damn thing. I had similar experiences. I would often just toss the script away, knowing full well, it was not the answer to the problem I was having. (this is also why we have more gut issues--unbalanced gut bacteria) Glad you found a good doctor! -
We Need To Start A Thread On Stupid Stuff Doctors Say!
IrishHeart replied to mushroom's topic in Doctors
O M G and sunova.... PLEASE tell me you are going back to tell this jerkward you have a thyroid DX! Look him right in the face. This guy was not only out of line with his comments--he left you UnDXed!!! This makes me crazy --as it is all too familiar (see my posts)--and I fear, it goes on more often than we will ever know. -
ARCHIVED Which Probiotics
IrishHeart replied to JustNana's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Custom Probiotics offers a multi-strain powder that worked well for me. (I had NO detectable good bacteria in my gut when I was tested at DX and this probiotic powder helped put me "straight". ) I also switch up from time to time and use Culturelle (the non dairy ones) as my GI doctor suggested them. They are less-expensive, portable and contain the... -
ARCHIVED Another Question
IrishHeart replied to Mateto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes. My various symptoms "came and went" for 35 years. That's how they got the various labels : "IBS" and "GERD" (among others) Then, they all just STAYED. Every day was the same. Horrid. Once DXed and off gluten, almost all of them are GONE. -
Kiddo, From our many PM conversations, I have to say that YOU are your own best advocate! You have fought long and hard to be HEARD and you researched and read everything you could. You ask questions and you offer help to others in need on here now, too. So, you are paying it forward You should be proud that you are a self-healer. You know what...

ARCHIVED Weird Looking "object" In Gluten-Free Mall Banner
IrishHeart replied to RiceGuy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It's a woman, with red hair --in ponytails--- holding a lolli. The red "object" is part of her ponytail (on the right side of her head) blowing forward. That's all I see. But if you guys see an alien, a shrimp, or anything else ...well, that's cool, too. Whatever blows yer skirt up. -
Just give yourself some more healing time, hon! This is a long, slow road to recovery and sometimes, we still get "regular stuff" --nothing to do with gluten/celiac--like upset tums, viruses, headaches, colds. It may or may not be other foods, grains, fruits, or whatever....it's still early and you ate a LOT of goodies. You can make yourself nuts...

ARCHIVED Teeth Cleaning At Dentist's
IrishHeart replied to lovetapioca's topic in Super Sensitive People
This is EXACTLY what happened to me! Dental molds and any of the "caines"--feels just like I have been glutened. -
ARCHIVED Teeth Cleaning At Dentist's
IrishHeart replied to lovetapioca's topic in Super Sensitive People
I never had novocaine when I was a kid either. The first time a dentist came at me ( as an adult) with a needle to numb me, I said "What the hell is THAT for?? " Not many of our generation did get novacaine, from what I have learned from others. I think it set me up for real "dental phobia". I like my dentist personally, but I despise going... -
oh, no, I didn't think you were not grateful at all. I am sure you loved it! I was just reassuring you that they probably took all the right steps. I had friends cook for me recently and I was very touched by it all! My guess is you ate too much of foods that are still tough to process. Why shouldn't you eat? If you are hungry, eat up! No one...

I would not "assume" you were glutened, hon. It was very nice of these people to go to great lengths to cook for you and if you trust they were careful about CC, don't assume you feel lousy from their cooking. Of course, "avoiding all gluten" is one thing-- and I am sure they did not use any gluten ingredients, but a kitchen that normally handles gluten...

ARCHIVED The Emotonal Toll
IrishHeart replied to AnemicAwareness's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am not sure who told you to "stay gluten-free before your endoscopy/colonoscopy" for a verified Celiac diagnosis, but this advice is totally wrong on two counts. You need to be consuming gluten at the time of this test and an endoscopy/colonoscopy will not DX celiac--they need to do a biopsy. And hate to tell you this, hon, but Lindt chocolates are not... -
ARCHIVED Itemized Deductions For Celiacs
IrishHeart replied to plumbago's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For what it is worth, I found it "interesting" that my doctor told me he wrote the "medical necessity" letter for his patient, who filed her taxes with the gluten-free food deduction claims included and she was promptly audited. While people may have nothing to hide, from what I hear, an audit is a royal Pain in the Butt. I saved all the receipts... -

ARCHIVED Do Celiacs Have To Avoid All Grains?
IrishHeart replied to quincy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Agree. There is no "one size fits all" diet, I have concluded. Everybody is different. And I go by this ridiculously simple thought for my own "diet": If it makes me feel lousy in any way, I don't eat it. -
ARCHIVED Can You Share Your Easter Traditions?
IrishHeart replied to Simona19's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
No matter how poor we were, my parents made sure we had new Easter outfits. My Mom said it was "bad luck" not to wear something NEW that day. Raised a Catholic, the days before: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil on Saturday were somber days for a little kid. We had been saving up our pennies, nickels and dimes in Lenten Boxes to give to the poor... -
We enjoy those frequently ! Good, aren't they!? (never used brown sugar though, just sea salt) I learned how to make them a few years ago while watching the chef Jacques Pepin. It's a way to get my guy to eat his greens The only thing is--you gotta eat them ASAP. Not a "save for later" at all.

I see. Well, I do hope you find your "culprit" and get well once more! Best to you!

ARCHIVED Do Celiacs Have To Avoid All Grains?
IrishHeart replied to quincy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Acidophilus is only ONE form of probiotics. The human gut has many different strains, so a multi-strain one may be more beneficial to you. Probiotics should ALLEVIATE constipation and diarrhea by balancing the gut flora, so this perplexes me. hmm...do you drink enough water throughout the day? often constipation results because of too little hydration... -
You were doing "great" scraping off gravy? (meaning, you had no bowel issues?) Hon, that's major CC! (you probably know this, right?) If you are on a voluntary gluten-free diet, that's one thing. But, if you are a DXed Celiac, you should not be doing things like this. Even if you are not having major symptoms, you're doing damage to the small intestine...

ARCHIVED Which Shampoo Do Y'all Use?
IrishHeart replied to GFreeMO's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I don't have DH, but I did have lots of scabby yucky sores and a peeling, itching, red BURNY scalp that made me cry. It was yucky and I lost a lot of my hair when I was sick. So, I used CLEURE for a long time (it is expensive, but it was gentle and free of everything we worry about--the brand name stands for CLEan and pURE) Now I alternate between... -
