ARCHIVED Swollen Itchy Eyelids
IrishHeart replied to IrishHeart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is an old post and truthfully, I forgot I even posted it. I wrote so many those first few months--this 'newbie' had sooooo many questions!!! I am happy to report that after being gluten-free for 10 months, it's pretty much gone. No itching, no swelling. Hope all of you have some relief from it, too! -
You bet, hon. Hope it helps! and P.S. Don't worry yourself over it too much. Sometimes family illnesses/other health issues have NOTHING to do with celiac. They just "are".

I grew up in the Boston, Massachusetts area. My neighborhood was an immigrant melting pot and "clan-ish"...everyone knew everyone. Mrs. Jones would make an extra "P B and J sammy" when she made the ones for her own 5 kids if you were playing on the street when she called them inside AND she was also "allowed" to yell at you if you were misbehaving. There... -

Well said!--and I agree with you completely. After my DX, we did the genetic testing and my Mom felt just as bad as yours. She went gluten-free 3 months after I did and feels great. I will take longer. We feel worse for my Dad, who died in 2008 from many symptoms which point to unDxed celiac. If we only knew... ah well. We cannot go backward... -
There is much written about celiac disease and it's association with various cancers. It does not mean that if you have celiac you will develop cancer; studies do, however, suggest that undiagnosed celiac or non-adherence to a strict gluten free diet MAY increase the risk of developing cancer, in particular, lymphoma. But the good news is, if you stick...

Dingle is a big Fav, for sure! Galway is lovely-- as is Donegal. Kinsale. Wexford. We have been all over the place. We drive ourselves through all the back roads and just "wing it". Our honeymoon was 17 counties in 17 days. Best time of my life! Went again with friends and with hub's Mom and aunt (I do not recommend traveling overseas with your MIL ... -

ARCHIVED Healing Your Gi Tract In The Beginning - How?
IrishHeart replied to silveylane's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
By the way, I am 2 months postop from gallbladder surgery. I thought I knew what acid reflux and pain was, but I didn't. Nothing I've had compares to what my child has been going through. And I was happy to just eat a cracker or rice when I was sick, but then I wasn't 15 y/o with an insatiable appetite either. He has lost 20 1bs, I've now lost 10 1bs... -

Eggs bother me, too, hon....Not IN things. Alone. Not sure why. My Mom said Udi's bothered her too. Not sure why. She switched to Canyon Bakehouse Bread. No problem! Hubby makes our bread --and that seems to agree with me. -

IrishHeart replied to silveylane's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I burned from my mouth to you- know- where for over 3 years. My entire GI tract was inflamed. Up all night--Gawd, that pain is ugly. You being able to tolerate acidic foods and fatty foods with reflux disease is unusual, I think. Very lucky, even. I know this young man wants to be "normal" and eat like everyone else--heck, who doesn't? --but... -
Just a thought.....I use the Kitchen Basics broths-- free of gluten, other allergens and MSG. Here ya go! Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Squash - Butternut, Pumpkin, Etc., -- I Have Gluten-Like Reaction - Anyone Else?
IrishHeart replied to PeachBlossoms's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
yes, exactly! I am not alone on this, I see. If I do not have protein with the carb, I feel out of sorts. The fats help. (It is not unlike my sister who has diabetes and finds she needs a proper ratio to feel well). -
ARCHIVED Multiple Questions
IrishHeart replied to Deacon's Garden's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll cut to the chase and answer the big ones: 1) Symptoms are not in "anyone's head". 2) Symptoms resolving on a gluten-free diet is indicative that gluten is a problem for you. It's out and you feel better, right? 3) Many celiacs also have secondary lactose intolerance because lactase, which is the enzyme that breaks down the sugar lactose, is... -
Good point! MSG makes me feel awful.

AHA!! well, I did not know THAT part about McCormick using shared lines myself! hmm. (I am not one to use products that are produced on shared lines with wheat.) So, thanks for that! I consulted the Cecelia's Gluten Free shopping Guide for that spices info when I was newly DXed. And I read all the info on their site. I do use McCormick spices regularly...

With all due respect, what I have suggested is not going to make him feel he will suffer a "life of gastronomic doom" nor did I say he could never have any gluten-free prepared foods at all. Did I? Nor do I not think the OP would get the wrong impression at all from what I have said. I suggested that tomato sauce is one of the worst foods for reflux... -
I agree with Stephanie--wait and retry each one individually. Single ingredient McCormick spices are gluten free. Their statement is: "Thank you for contacting us regarding your special allergies and intolerances to gluten. We understand that there are a growing number of people that have gluten concerns. We would like to take this opportunity to...

ARCHIVED Healing Your Gi Tract In The Beginning - How?

I understand that ---which is exactly why I said "unless he has anxiety"--in which case, he may need the med for sure (although Mama said it did nothing for his sleep but keep him aroused and alert.) I also said this bland diet is TEMPORARY--like a week or two--so he can stop being so sick and in pain and misery. Feeling better will lift his spirits in... -
ARCHIVED Healing Your Gi Tract In The Beginning - How?
IrishHeart replied to silveylane's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, of course. Nothing is being absorbed properly! Some people need MORE of a drug and some (like me) have an exaggerated effect from them. I cannot take even a tiny dose of something without terrible side effects. So, I take nothing. You may wish to stop the ativan. Unless he suffers from anxiety? in which case he may need to continue taking it... -

I find this topic particularly fascinating as the majority of us DXed with celiac are of European descent: Irish, Scottish, German, Swedish, English, Italian, Polish. The HLA DQ2 genes are prevalent in these cultures, including some in Africa. Pretty cool stuff, huh? Could be why Australia has a high rate of celiac too??---as you suggest, you had...
