  1. we get pretty good at this really fast, don't we? I also go by the "best to avoid the more than 5 ingredients rule" (I made that up) If there are that many "THINGS" in something, especially unpronounceable ingredients with lots of "natural flavors" and hyphens and dyes and MSG (ugh!) and "hydrogenated this -and- that", it is probably best for me to...
  2. Cannot hurt to post once again as new members come on here daily. No doctor's office should be reluctant to give you test copies--they are YOURS!! That's BS!!! As for your PCP's comment about the multi---she is really misinformed and you cannot trust her to take care of you at this point.
  3. They are probably not getting worse. You noticed them going away right?...and now, they are back. Sorry, hon! Unfortunately, the healing process is an up and down road. If you are OFF gluten and feel better, when you get hit, you feel worse. It is quite possible you were glutened. Even well-meaning friends (whose kitchens are NOT gluten-free)...
  4. Good luck with that. They are not trained for this in medical school. In fact, they are taught that it is a "rare" condition. Until that changes, they remain clueless. Your new GI doctor can do follow up testing--just as mine does! Once he sees you have celiac disease, he should do the right thing, but again, you may want to ask for specific tests...
  5. I felt like there was something more wrong with me, too--and pressed for testing. I had a serious D, K, B-12 and Folate deficiency. They are all resolved now. YES, you need a good doctor. But you also need to be your own best advocate and that means going in to every appointment, armed with questions and not leaving until they are answered. I know...
  6. OMG! This doc is so ignorant. If the supposed "gold standard" of diagnosing Celiac is a biopsy that shows villous atrophy, then why is she questioning the DX? That makes absolutely no sense. I told you on another post you wrote about age and diagnosis that many people are DXed at 40, 50, 60, 70...did you print out that article Sylvia posted the link...
  7. I took the time to write a letter to my large family. They ALL know I was very, very ill and incapacitated from something for over 3 years, so when I was Dxed, and had the genetic test done which showed genes from both parents, I felt it was the right thing to inform all of them. I have siblings and over 40 cousins and they all have kids, too. I explained...
  8. Just FYI, BUMBLEBEE low sodium tuna in the GOLD can has no soybean oil
  9. There are so many totally dedicated gluten-free facilities that I tend to use only their products. If I see the word "wheat" anywhere on a label...as in "Processed in a facility that also uses wheat", I do not use it. There are plenty of other options, rather than risk it. That's just me.
  10. I agree with what TAKALA has posted above and will add my two cents. I am both a realist and a raging optimist (yes, that is possible!) who thinks that many of the symptoms I have as a result of gluten will either reverse, subside or at least, be more tolerable. I have dozens, some debilitating, yet I have had many diminish and I keep in mind that...
  11. Good for you! That IS a silver lining! For ten years, I was seriously overweight (at one point, I weighed 220 at 5'4" ) and no matter how hard I tried, I never lost much weight (even on weight watchers). Then, the Celiac triggered and I was so ill, I lost 96 lbs. Go figure. Not the best way to lose the weight, and I really got down to the...
  12. I also can't "do" soy and we use the Earth Balance Soy-Free in all our baking and it works well. Make sure you get the RED tub! I'll have to try the Spectrum. Thanks!
  13. As Sylvia says, It's safe. "Maltodextrin is gluten free. It can be made from a variety of starches, including corn, potato, rice or wheat. However the source does not matter because maltodextrin is such a highly processed ingredient that the protein is removed, rendering it gluten free. If wheat is used to make maltodextrin, "wheat" will be appear on...
  14. Sorry you got "hit"...but Do NOT feel stupid! Who among us hasn't done this at least once? I am (probably) overly ridiculous in being cautious about label-reading but if it even says "may" or "processed in a facility that also"....I do not touch it anymore. I think CC is what "gets" us more often than we can anticipate. I hope you feel...
  15. thanks jestgar!
  16. Thanks for the tip! At the inflated prices we must pay for gluten-free flours, etc., 85 cents is very much appreciated! Cheers, IH
  17. Not to be picky, but saying "gluten allergy" is technically incorrect. Most people use this phrase to explain their condition, rather than say "I have celiac which is a potentially fatal autoimmune disease that..."....because by then, the person has a glazed look in the eyes that says " blah blah blah sooo not listening anymore..." When someone...
  18. This is not clear at all....after the biopsy, what did the doctor SAY? Is it Celiac or not? Being optimistic is a wonderful trait (hey, I am an optimist!)-- but you also must be realistic. If you actually do have Celiac, that needs to be addressed with follow-up care from a knowledgeable doctor. Okay, good luck!
  19. Heidi, Here is a great explanation of the difference between a wheat allergy, gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease. Open Original Shared Link Please read it--- as it is very obvious that you are confused about it (as many folks are!) There is technically no such thing as a "gluten allergy", but that is what people call it. It is the AUTOIMMUNE...
  20. Totally none of my business, but in my opinion, NO ONE should ever do what someone else wants them to do. It will only make you miserable. Do what you love in life, kiddo! It's the only way to live. You are an enthusiastic young woman. Have a good life!
  21. It's okay, Heidi. Life is indeed stressful at times. Hon, if you are dealing with celiac, it is best for you to accept the diagnosis. It does not "go away", but it goes into remission on a gluten free diet--and that is good news! Please read about it and understand it as best you can, then live a long and healthy life. Knowledge is power,...
  22. Heidi, I think you keep missing my point for some reason and I have tried valiantly to make it clear. I thought you'd find the history of celiac of particular interest. Did you read it? No, you rudely dismissed it from the beginning and scoffed it. Instead, you chose to focus on the fact it came from wiki. I explained over and over that those citations...
  23. That's fantastic. No side effects from anesthesia.
  24. I always said I was NOT moving the ouija board pointer when I was a kid , but I was. You can "make anything" happen. When I was very, very ill and in pain before DX, I tried various natural remedies, herbs, castor oil packs, skin brushing, acupuncture, UNDAS, rotation diets, leaky gut protocols, even rolfing and biofeedback--anything suggested by...
  25. okay, one more time..... (1) Regarding Wiki: The brief history of celiac I provided for Heidi, thinking she may find it interesting since she mentioned her family tree, has been written up in various articles. I have provided a few to cross-reference.if anyone wants to check them. I think you will find the information is valid. (2) No one is disputing...
