ARCHIVED A Tattoo To Symbolize The New Me
MJ-S replied to Rebecca92's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could do the gluten-free logo (gluten-free with a circle around it). The downside might be if the logo changes over the years (new FDA regulations, etc.) then it could look outdated. Or retro. -
I recently discovered quinoa flakes for breakfast - I drizzle some maple syrup on it and really like it! It's porridgy in consistency, cooks fast, and it's a superfood. So I don't get sick of it, I rotate between this, a breakfast sandwich with egg, and smoked salmon on toast.

I miss Nutella dearly. Can't do dairy, and hazelnut was one of the only things that came up positive with allergy skin tests (even though I never noticed a problem with it - go figure). One the plus side, I don't miss the calories!

ARCHIVED Any Spanish/ Italian Speakers Out There?
MJ-S replied to Ellymay's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
For Spain: I was just in Seville for a wedding - I made it almost all the way through (got sick at the wedding itself). If you can find your way to grocery stores, that could help you quite a bit. The bigger Corte Ingles grocery stores (that's the major dept store throughout Spain) have extensive gluten free products. I strongly recommend that you... -
ARCHIVED Any Spanish/ Italian Speakers Out There?

I speak spanish. I'm impressed by babel fish! Just a few corrections, because according to this you're a pregnant male "Estoy embarazada y soy celiaca. No puedo comer trigo, cebada, centeno o avena. No puedo comer los crustáceos, el queso suave, las ensaladas o la mayonesa. Los huevos y la carne deben estar bien hechos y caliente. Por favor demuéstreme q... -
Allegra name brand is fine. I stay away from generic Allegra because it contains lactose. Name brand Allegra does not.

ARCHIVED What Just Happened?
MJ-S posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Feeling confused right now. I went out for a drink with my husband, and had one vodka tonic (with Karlsson's potato vodka). Not even halfway through I started to feel strong gas pains. That was a couple hours ago - I've been extremely gassy since then. I have vodka tonics all the time (they're my safe drink, as long as they're made with potato vodka)... -
That sounds like pretty much every Bertucci's I've been to (and I live in Boston and have been to plenty). I haven't been to one since going gluten free, though.

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination - Celiac Vs Intolerance

I also tested negative but I react to minute quantities. For example, today. I proudly made gluten-free pancakes in a large nonstick frying pan that I hadn't used in ages... in fact, since the last time I made gluteney pancakes! Since I've already established my propensity for stupid mistakes in another thread... now I'm left to wonder as I lie... -
ARCHIVED Tennis Players Gluten Free .
MJ-S replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How closely do you watch tennis? Hate to get argumentative on a celiac forum, but this is a player who's been in the top 3 since 2007. He won the AO in 2008. Top players will tell you that the differences at that level between winning and losing have the narrowest margins. Djokovic has long been known for mental instability and physically many of his problems... -
ARCHIVED Tennis Players Gluten Free .
MJ-S replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lol, his parents' owned a pizza place in Serbia when he was growing up, so maybe they motivated the place in London. And he's a national hero, so I'm sure a Serbian restaurant in London would be careful enough! They probably convert to ALL gluten-free when he's there. My favorite players are Federer and Nadal. -

I have to laugh reading this thread because I'm also a big tennis fan and I've been thinking of posting about the same thing! First, I wonder how much of this is a "fad" and how much is actually medical. In Djoker's case (no, I'm not a fan), he stated earlier this year that the gluten diet was recommended by a new nutritionist he's using. That, coupled... -
Discussing with the nurse sounds like a great idea to me. Here's a question: If your biopsy is negative would you continue to gluten, knowing that your blood tests were positive? If it were me, I would stop eating gluten immediately, because I don't see how the results of the biopsy would change this decision. I'm sure others on the board are more...

Thanks for the responses! They found stomach polyps (a lot of them) and diverticulosis. Biopsy results are not in yet, so we wait.

ARCHIVED Looking For Dairy Substitutes
MJ-S replied to waterlily-'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Can you just make fruit smoothies? Like with orange juice/apple juice and berries/bananas/etc? I have oj fortified with calcium/vit D every morning to make up for the lost calcium from dairy. -
I've been trying to convince my mom to get a Celiac blood test since I discovered my own gluten intolerance this year and learned about Celiac disease. She's had a lifetime of fatigue, low energy and mood, iron deficiency, food allergies and sensitivities, lactose intolerance, bloating, gas, reflux, facial tics, sleep issues, etc. She's been resisting, so...

ARCHIVED Ok, Not To Be A Total Skeptic...
MJ-S replied to HS7474's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hmm - the only other questionable item was a tempeh reuben I made for lunch. I've suspected it before, but I can't figure out what's in it that would make me react. I make it with Udi's bread, sauerkraut, Lightlife tempeh (flax), and Annie's Thousand Island dressing. I've been fine every time I've had it except the last two times. Could the dressing... -

I resisted throwing away my wooden spoons because I also didn't really think they could be a problem after many thorough washings. Then I got glutened making pasta and stirring with one of those spoons. It took about 3 months after being gluten free to clear my system enough and become sensitive enough until I felt the glutening from the spoon. So I finally... -

It was my first attempt ever with coconut milk, and I also don't love coconut flavor. This was more mild than actual coconut flakes/flavoring, though. The fish did not have a strong coconut flavor at all, and I didn't pour on too much sauce, which was acidic because of the lemon. My husband ate the rest of the sauce with a spoon for dessert - he loved it... -

ARCHIVED Yellowtail Savignon Blanc Has Gluten?
MJ-S replied to MJ-S's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't get into the faq link. Once you enter the site you can click on each wine and see its nutritional info. They all list "gluten free" except the savignon blanc. So on the glass half full side, that seems to be only one that's a concern. No idea why. -
ARCHIVED Yellowtail Savignon Blanc Has Gluten?
MJ-S posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So conversation in another thread about wine led me to do some poking around the web, and I found that the Yellowtail website lists if a wine is "vegan" or "gluten free". And the savignon blanc is *not* listed as gluten free! One more thing to worry about.
