The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
bartfull replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Now that I have my stove working again I am going to make one of my famous bacon egg and cheese sandwiches. Schar bread untoasted, smeared with LOTS of butter. An over easy egg with melted extra sharp white cheddar. Two (unless I splurge and have three) strips of bacon cooked very crisp and crumbled on top of the melted cheese. Then I'll turn the sandwich... -

ARCHIVED It Gets Better Every Day
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks Nicole! Every time I would read here that it gets better with time, well it's not that I didn't believe it, I just didn't believe it would get better for ME. It seemed that for the longest time I was losing more and more foods. I thought as time went on I would lose more and end up eating a diet of meat and dirt. (Worms eat dirt. If it's good enough... -
ARCHIVED Sharing A Home With Gluten-Eating Puppy
bartfull replied to dani nero's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The trouble Dani is having though is that her puppy is on a doctor prescribed food that contains gluten. My Mom had a dog with pancreatitis and her vet put her (the dog) on a special food too. The dog hated it! The only way Mom could get her to eat it was to cook it. She got a dedicated toaster oven for the dog food and cooked it in that. Oh my. The smell... -
Ever since I started I couldn't eat almonds. Cashews and peanuts were OK and I could do pistachios if I keep it to a minimum, but every time I tried almonds I got sick. Well, the other day I went to get some cashews and I noticed they had the Planter's mixed nuts on sale. The way I've been getting stuff back at such a rapid pace I thought, "Why not?"...

Good news! The oven is now working. I have a gas stove that runs on propane. The tanks outside are the side-by-side type that can't be filled from the truck. You have to take the tanks to them. Of course I can't do it so I had a friend do it. He simply didn't have the lever pushed all the way over so I wasn't getting any gas. I fixed that this morning. ...

ARCHIVED Breakfast Muffins
bartfull replied to Brandiwine's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So they taste like peanut butter rather than bananas? I'm not fond of peanut butter unless it is baked into something, and I'm not fond of bananas if they ARE baked into something. But if these taste like peanut butter I would probably like them. Especially cut in half with a hershey bar in between. -
ARCHIVED How Much Can One Person Take? I've Reached My Limit...
bartfull replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Have you tried peeing into the bowl and just slipping the cup under you mid-stream? That's what my doctor had me try when I had similar trouble and it worked. I know it may be too late for this job but don't beat yourself up over it. Remember, you are a good person and things usually work out the way they're supposed to. Maybe the boss at this job would... -
I say THIS to the corn-free gods: Open Original Shared Link

Nicole, the corn that is in your meds is most likely corn starch. There's no protein in corn starch. That was the first thing I got back, long before I got the other parts of corn back. As a matter of fact I'm not sure if the starch ever bothered me. Once I reacted to corn meal I just gave up all forms of corn. But anyway, most people who are intolerant to...

ARCHIVED To Fry Or Not To Fry, That Is The Question ? Turkey, That Is.
bartfull replied to GFinDC's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Another good way to make a turkey is to brine it. I'm sure there are recipes for that on the internet. I had it done that way at a friend's house one year and it was good. -
Up one day, down the next. Got a turkey yesterday and today my oven crapped out on me! Not knowing what's wrong with it or how much it'll cost to fix it, let alone if I can get someone out there to work on it before Sunday when the turkey will be thawed and ready to cook, I went this morning and bought one of those electric roasters. I don't think...

ARCHIVED Speed Of Reaction To Corn
bartfull replied to UK2004's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It's not all that rare. There are several websites devoted to the topic. Here's one that helped me when I was corn intolerant. Even though an intolerance isn't as serious as an allergy I learned a lot there about the things to avoid. If what you have IS an allergy, your next exposure might be full blown anaphalaxis. If it is just (JUST??) an intolerance you... -

Sounds like it could be a true allergy rather than an intolerance. -
ARCHIVED Corn And Rice And Gluten Free Pizza Crust?
bartfull replied to GFAnnie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Against the Grain makes a decent pizza crust. Here are the ingredients: Tapioca starch, milk, eggs, non-GMO canola oil, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese. I have no idea what the proportions are but it seems the cheeses are what holds it all together. There are also several recipes online for pizza crust made with cauliflower and cheese.As... -
ARCHIVED Sharing A Home With Gluten-Eating Puppy
bartfull replied to dani nero's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey Dani! It's good to see you! I'm glad your puppy has such a caring "Mom". Except for the licking your face part all you have to do is be sure to wash your hands before YOU put anything in your mouth. For me that part was easy because after waitressing for so many years it just got to be a habbit. My cat still eats gluten food and I'm always petting... -
If you buy $25 worth of other stuff at one of my local stores, the turkeys are 78 cents a pound. I bought three loaves of Schar bread to make stuffing with, a container of chicken broth to add to the drippings for gravy, some potatoes, and a TWENTY-FIVE pound turkey!!! Nope, I'm not having people over. It's all for me. I'll cook it, debone it, put packets...

ARCHIVED Lifestyle And Recovery
bartfull replied to tpchan85's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You may find that your tolerance for alcohol goes way down as you start to heal. You'll be absorbing it more so it'll take less to get you drunk. I remember being your age and I do understand where you're at, even though I am MUCH older now. I won't point any fingers at you. If you still want to party maybe you can make every other drink one with alcohol... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Corn Free Tooth Paste?
bartfull replied to w8in4dave's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just plain baking soda works fine. A little strange at first but after a while it is so refreshing you kind of like the taste. -

You need vitamin D to absorb calcium, but you also need MAGNESIUM to absorb vitamin D. Open Original Shared Link I take 4,000 units of D3 (it's better than D2), plus a pill that has 1,000 mg of calcium, 500 mg of magnesium, and 5 mg. of zinc. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed -
bartfull replied to Clarkeson's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
First, go over to the coping section and read the Newbie 101 thread. Great info there. And for the sweating, crazy as it may sound, Milk of Magnesia under the arms will keep the odor away better than anything. It's a bit messy and you have to flap your arms a bit to dry it before getting dressed, but it works so well, costs less money, and doesn't have... -

What she said. And do go over to the coping section here to read the Newbie 101 thread. It'll help a LOT! -
I stopped the ice cream about a week ago. That was the only sugar in my diet and I expected headaches too but so far nothing! I'm still eating white rice so maybe that carb thing is keeping the headaches away. It may be my imagination but I think my wrist feels a little better too. I haven't lost any weight but I didn't really expect to yet. It seems like...

ARCHIVED Craving Fish - Need Advice/help
bartfull replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most of their stuff has dairy but there are cinnamon raisin bagels and these: Open Original Shared Link both without dairy or any grains. I love this company. It is a dedicated gluten-free facility. They don't even allow employees to bring gluten in their lunches.
