ARCHIVED Gluten Free Turkeys: 2015 Edition
bartfull replied to lissuhllama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've never heard of a turkey with gluten. Sometimes they put a gravy packet in with them but just throw that away. The solution many turkeys are injected with may have corn in it, but no gluten. And it doesn't matter what they feed the turkeys (from a gluten standpoint anyway). Even if they eat a diet of nothing but wheat, it does not get into the meat... -
ARCHIVED Self Diagnosed and curious
bartfull replied to atheresa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you read the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section? It will cut down on some of the confusion. Also, please feel free to ask questions here on the board. We want to help. That goes for you too, Atheresa. Sorry your thread got sidetracked. -

bartfull replied to atheresa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not questioning that you have celiac. With the malabsorption and other symptoms I'm sure your doc is right and you do have it. I just wanted to be sure that you know that test was for allergies and that you have an epi pen in case you should need it. I saw my Dad die from anaphalactic shock and I'd hate to think there's someone out there whose life might... -
ARCHIVED YOU ARE SO LUCKY
bartfull replied to poshepoche's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
We are ALL lucky that our disease does not require surgery, medication, or frequent doctor visits. And for those of us who don't care to shop online for whatever reason, if we want to bake we can always make our own almond, rice, tapioca, or potato flours. The instructions are online. (Isn't it great sometimes to live in this day and age?) -

bartfull replied to atheresa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ah, but that is a test for allergies, which are a totally different thing from sensitivities. Allergies are most often breathing and hives related. Sensitivities are the things that give celiac-type symptoms without the villi damage. Now that being said, if you have true allergies to certain foods, you should have an epi pen. Even if your allergic reaction... -
ARCHIVED Good bread
bartfull replied to plumbago's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, Omaha is famous in the midwest for its good restaurants so it doesn't surprise me that they have good, safe, (and delicious) gluten-free options. Wish I lived closer... -

Hi Beverage. Could you tell us what blood test it was that showed gluten sensitivity? -
ARCHIVED Good bread
bartfull replied to plumbago's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nope. Just wondering how they got the extra fiber so I looked up the ingredients. As far as price goes, it depends on where you live. In this tiny town the small loaf of Rudi's, Udi's, or Canyon Bakehouse are all $6.99 plus tax. There are 14 slices in each, counting the heels. That's why I buy the big loaf (22 extremely large slices) of Udi's. One sandwich... -

Does Anyone Know How To Kill Or "inactivate" Gluten?
bartfull replied to mamaupupup's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Odds are they DO. Celiac runs in families and it is recommended that all first degree relatives (parents, children and siblings) of celiacs be tested every two years. You can't control what friends and family do in their houses but you must insist that NO gluten ever be brought into your house. If MY sister had brought it into my house the way yours... -

Looks like they added bamboo for the extra fiber? Water, potato extract, Non-GMO and expeller pressed canola oil*, rice starch, rice flour, evaporated cane syrup, inulin, bamboo fiber, honey, sea salt, molasses, egg whites, xanthan gum, yeast, distilled vinegar, natural enzymes. I have never had the new recipe but I had the original recipe. It tasted... -
Does Anyone Know How To Kill Or "inactivate" Gluten?
bartfull replied to mamaupupup's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, this IS the right place. For those who are wondering what this is all about, Karen replied to me personally on my profile page. She couldn't find this thread again, but I gave her a link so she could benefit from everyone's advice. Her gluten response seems to be DH or something similar. I mentioned iodine and sent her to the DH section. In... -
Does Anyone Know How To Kill Or "inactivate" Gluten?
bartfull replied to mamaupupup's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Karen, you told me you get the rash when you get glutened. Has the rash been diagnosed as DH? If so, it could be that iodine is making it worse. People with DH can get flares off and on for two years or more, even if they don't get glutened, and a diet high in iodine can make it worse. Go on over to the DH section here and read as much as you can. You'll... -
Does Anyone Know How To Kill Or "inactivate" Gluten?
bartfull replied to mamaupupup's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You can't get glutened by merely touching gluten. The molecule is too large to pass through the skin. Think about it - if touching gluten could get us sick, we'd ALL be sick all the time simply from going to the grocery store or visiting friends. The solution is to be diligent about washing your hands EVERY SINGLE TIME you plan on popping something into... -
ARCHIVED Patches has leg cramps
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh yeah, Ender? I read (it think it was on the BBC News) that cats do indeed sometimes get seizures from noise. Ripping off a sheet of aluminum foil, crinkling a plastic bag, and even tapping a dish on a spoon are all enough to set some cats off. I know Grommit used to run fast into the other room when I used foil in the kitchen. Never had a seizure but she... -

He usually doesn't have ANY trouble getting up or down from anyplace. He often jumps from the back of my easy chair onto the floor instead of going down to the seat and jumping from there. If I put ramps up he'd probably ignore them. Honestly, he acts like a much younger cat. I'm actually wondering if he IS younger. I believe Harold didn't know how old... -
Welcome, Kim. You need to learn how to avoid cross-contamination. In the coping section, pinned to the top is a thread called "Newbie 101". Check it out. It'll teach you so much. I know it must be hard in a house full of kids but you MUST, for your sake and for theirs, get strict with yourself. There are plenty of folks here who live in mixed households....

ARCHIVED Self Diagnosed and curious
bartfull replied to atheresa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The only way to get a diagnosis now would be to do a gluten challenge. (Eat gluten for 12 weeks.) The only reasons to put yourself through that would be if you have kids (so you can get them tested), if you are in school (so you can force them to feed you gluten-free foods), or to possibly cover yourself should you have to go to the hospital or a nursing... -
ARCHIVED Ender's Science Experiment
bartfull replied to Ender's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Could be the white potato just bothered you because you threw something new at your not-yet-healed gut. Or you could have an intolerance to nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant). For now I would just stick to what you've been eating that has been working for you. Smoothies? Well, they aren't exactly smoothies, but if you mix the fruit... -
Good morning. I don't know if all is OK because no one has posted to that thread yet. But if they do and I get a notification I'll let you know.
-
That's what I did. I clicked on "no notifications". It still shows that in the box. It's just that the "all activity" I clicked on right after that said I had just decided to follow that thread. It showed someone else had just decided to follow a thread too. That (showing someone is following a thread) seems to only show up in all activity for a few minutes...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free baked goods making me sick
bartfull replied to Rebekah3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I second the crock pot idea. -
I never subscribed to it in the first place. When I thought I had UNsubscribed it said I had just done the opposite. It was in the thread about "gluten-free baked goods making me sick". I'm assuming if I go there and make another post it won't notify me but maybe if someone else does I can check my email and see if a notification shows up. The thing is though...
-
AARRRGH! I just went to my email and found a bunch of emails telling me someone posted in a certain thread. I never clicked on anything saying to notify me when someone posted. So I went to my profile and clicked on the button to stop following that thread. When I came back here to "All Activity it said I had just clicked on FOLLOW for that thread.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free baked goods making me sick
bartfull replied to Rebekah3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Everybody (including myself) is told to eat plain whole foods at first, and everybody (including myself) goes right out and buys gluten-free substitutes right away anyway. I think it's because we feel so deprived at first and want our daily bread (or daily pretzels). Or it could be the ravenous hunger brought on by gluten withdrawal - we think if we...
