ARCHIVED What Do You Want To Tell Your Friends And Family About Living Gluten Free?
bartfull replied to LisaDances's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, worrying about cross-contamination is NOT "going overboard". Seriously, if you touch my food after eating a sandwich, I WILL get sick. If I just pick the croutons off of my salad, I WILL get sick. If I just eat the pie filling and don't eat the crust, I WILL get sick. If my boyfriend kisses me without brushing his teeth after eating pizza, I WILL... -
The Costa Rican coffee, I can understand. It is SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD! I have noticed with myself that when I get glutened I get REALLY grumpy. I don't think the grumps are because I don't feel good either. A lot of times I just get a minor psoriasis outbreak which isn't that bad. But oh, you don't want to be around me then. If I drop something on the...

ARCHIVED Did Anyone Else Not Really Like Wheat?
bartfull replied to megsybeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My Mom who probably had celiac all of her life never liked bread. She wasn't even that fond of cake and cookies. She loved vegetables and would have seconds on them for "dessert". I always loved bread though. But I noticed when I was in my 20's (I'm in my late 50's now) that anything whole wheat gave me heartburn so I always avoided it. I never cared for... -
ARCHIVED Baked Goods Cooked At Higher Temperatures To Make Them Gluten Free?
bartfull replied to jantrelau's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hee-hee. I just went to their website and wrote to them about it. I told them that anyone with celiac disease who eats these WILL get sick and that they might be in danger of a lawsuit. I told them that next time I need to go to Denver (which will probably be fairly soon, actually) I will stop in and check if they are still calling these gluten-free. -
Erythroderma? Cherry angioma? Look them up on the internet and see if your symptoms match.

If you react to things after eating them a lot or too frequently it might be because you are salicylate sensitive. Salicylates build up in your system. Pistachios are a good example. I can eat ten or twelve at a sitting, and only once a week. Any more than that and I have a reaction. Most nuts are high in sals. Walnuts are generally safe though. How do you...

ARCHIVED Found Something For Inflammation
bartfull replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The websites I looked at said not to drink more than one cup a day or you risk getting D. I would imagine that if you made it too strong, the same would apply. They said steep it for ten minutes. -
ARCHIVED Found Something For Inflammation
bartfull replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll be picking some up at my healthfood store tomorrow. I read about how to make your own and it doesn't sound that hard, but after the 20 degree temps we had the past few overnights, (combined with my inability in the kitchen) I'll just buy some. -
ARCHIVED Can't Find Source Of Cross Contamination!

Actually bleach WILL react with some soaps. It will also react with some toilet bowl cleaners. And when I was a kid, it reacted with the stretch jeans my Mom tried to tie-dye for my sister. We all had to run out of the house and stay out for hours and hours. The gas is green, if anyone is wondering. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free
bartfull replied to ChrisMathis's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might have trouble going back on gluten after being off it for even a week. Our bodies react more strongly to it when we've been away from it for a while. So yeah, you might notice a positive change in the way you feel in only a week, but I doubt it would be worth the negative change in the way you feel when you start eating it again. Take this time... -
ARCHIVED Attempting To Learn As Quickly As Possible
bartfull replied to prairiemamma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Udi's MULTI-GRAIN bread is wonderful. I haven't tried their white bread, but the multi-grain tastes like french bread. Even my non-gluten-free friends love it. And if you or your son like the regular multi grain breads in the grocery store - the ones that have all of those little nutty bits in them, try Canyon Bakehouse multi-grain. It's yummy. -
ARCHIVED Can Only Eat White Potatoes And White Rice Without Pain
bartfull replied to aquaholical's topic in Super Sensitive People
I am orininally from Connecticut, not far from Lyme where Lyme Disease was first discovered. Almost everyone in my family and a lot of my friends have had it. As far as I know, there is no combination of herbs that will get rid of it. They may mask they symptoms, but unless you get on an antibiotic, you will never get rid of it. I am assuming you are self... -

This could be a blessing in disguise for you. You said yesterday that there wasn't much for gluten-free food in your area. If you are in a city there will be lots of places you can get it. Check ahead to find the locations of health food stores. You can try all of the different products like Udi's bread and other gluten-free foods to see what you and your... -
ARCHIVED Substitute For Excedrine Migraine?
bartfull replied to tracijo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
BC Asperin Powder doesn't specify that it is for migraine but because you put it in water and drink it, it works FAST, and when I took it for my agonizing jaw pain it knocked it out better than Extra Strength Advil or any other pain reliever I have ever used. If you can't find it in your area you can probably get it online. (I know that won't help you today... -
ARCHIVED "it's All In Your Head!"
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
But if you consider that most doctors spend less than 15 minutes with a patient during an office visit, that 1.5 (8 hour) days with each patient at Mayo equals approximately 48 office visits. The Mayo clinic in Rochester Mn. is in my opinion, the very best medical center in the country. I know many people who have gone there after all the other doctors... -
ARCHIVED Slow Healing? Or On The Wrong Track?
bartfull replied to October3's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That is a tough one. I was the same way when I was a child. My iron was so low they kept me on supplements for years. (The iron supplements discolored my teeth by the way. My baby teeth were white but when my adult teeth came in they were extremely yellow. I don't know if they have a different formula for it now, but you might ask his doctor about it.) ... -

ARCHIVED "it's All In Your Head!"
bartfull posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I was a kid I thought (along with doctors and other family members) that my Mom was a hypocondriac. One day she would complain of a stomach ache. The next day she would complain of a back ache. The day after that her feet were tingling. At least twice a week she complained of headaches. Mom had a king-sized case of chronic insomnia, and she also suffered... -
Soy does me in. Insomnia is one of my glutening symptoms and soy does the same thing to me. I avoid it like the plague.

I go along with the grilled cheese sandwich idea. I also like mashed potatoes with gravy when I'm sick. (Reminds me of meals I had when I was a kid - I hardly ever make mashed potatoes for myself.) And soft boiled eggs. When I was a kid I was born sick and for the first few years of my life that was all I ever wanted to eat. And of course, ICE CREAM.

ARCHIVED I Have The "what Got Me This Time" Conundrum
bartfull replied to birdie22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If I freeze anything, even liquids like spaghetti sauce, I put them in ziplock freezer bags. They don't leak, and when I need to defrost I can dump them from the bag into a bowl. Sometimes I end up peeling the bag loose but I always get it out. I'm laughing at myself a bit here. I am so careful about things like microwaving plastics, GMO foods, I buy... -
ARCHIVED Over-Helpful Friends?
bartfull replied to kittty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just went to a wedding reception Saturday evening. The bride offered to get something gluten-free for me and I told her I'd rather bring my own food. I thanked her for thinking of me but told her how easy it is to cross contaminate, and she was fine with that. This reception was outdoors and there was a picnic-style buffet. I brought a chicken sandwich... -
ARCHIVED If It Isn't Just Gluten, What Is It?
bartfull replied to Aqua's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Aqua, you need to read the thread, "Newbie 101". It'll teach you all of the places gluten can hide. As Mushroom said, it could very well be cross contamination. Pans, utensils, your toaster, all of these things can hold gluten. -
ARCHIVED I Have The "what Got Me This Time" Conundrum
bartfull replied to birdie22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Or it could be that someone in the house made a mistake at one point and used your butter with a gluteny knife and forgot to tell you. And pardon me if I sound preachy, but you should never heat anything in a plastic container. They outgas into your food. I'm not saying that's what got you sick, but it's a good idea to transfer anything you're going to...
