ARCHIVED Enterolab Results...
gf4life replied to Rachel--24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have similar genes. My son has HLA-DQB1*0502, 0301. His is translated as DQ1 (subtype 5) and DQ3 (subtype 7). You have HLA-DQB1*0301, 0501. Yours would be translated as DQ3 (subtype 7) and DQ1 (subtype 5) also. The gluten intolerance genes are: any HLA-DQB1*03xx [known as HLA-DQ3 (except 0302 ~this is the celiac gene known as DQ8, and... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results...
gf4life replied to Rachel--24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I realise all of your questions have been answered, but I wanted to reiterate one thing. You CAN have intestinal damage from gluten and not be Celiac. I get a little frustrated when people say you don't get intestinal damage from gluten intolerance. In some cases the person is celiac, but not yet full blown. In other cases they are gluten intolerant... -
ARCHIVED I Think My Nephew Has Celiac, But His Parents...
gf4life replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Jnkmnky, I understand how you feel. I used to get upset about it too. But all it did was hurt me to get upset. It didn't make any of my relatives listen to me any more. I find they are more receptive to learning about Celiac/gluten when I am not trying to force information on them or cram my opinions down their throats. They have started asking questions... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Vodka?
gf4life replied to julie5914's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree that it doesn't really matter when. I get glutened almost everytime we go on vacation, but I refuse to let that deter me! I try to be careful, but there is only so much you can do. This last vacation we were gone almost 10 days and I only felt like I might have gotten contaminated one day, the first day. I am usually sick for about two weeks... -
Hi Kathleen, I am in your area. We talked on email a few times, but I lost my entire email address book, so I haven't contacted anyone in a while. Please email me and we can plan a time to get together. god bless, Mariann

ARCHIVED I Think My Nephew Has Celiac, But His Parents...
gf4life replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It can be very frustrating to watch your loved ones be sick when you know that all they need to do it be tested for Celiac. If it is already proven to be in your family, then they have a high chance of having it too, but you cannot force them to be tested (or to test their children). My sister is quite sick, all the time, and she knows that the kids and... -

ARCHIVED Glutened By Vodka?
gf4life replied to julie5914's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It could have been the dinner. And buying organic foods doesn't mean they are safe. Gluten is organic! It could have been crumbs in the butter, or gluten particles in the pans she was using, or something in the peach salsa, etc... Also since you were on vacation, did you eat anywhere else? Gluten contamination is a risk we all take everytime we eat... -
I would try the vaseline suggestion. It sounds like he may have gotten severely chapped around his mouth and it is bothering him (so he licks it), but licking it makes it worse. It needs some sort of ointment on it to keep moisture in while it heals. It will also probably prevent him from licking his lips since it doesn't taste good. You may have to reapply...

ARCHIVED Candy, Now And Laters
gf4life replied to grantschoep's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Now and Laters are gluten free. I just recently checked after my kids got about 50 packs of them from a pinata at a birthday party! Here are the ingredients: NOW AND LATERS INGREDIENTS: Corn Syrup, Sugar, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Citric Acid, Egg Whites, Salt, Potato Starch, Artificial Flavor, Emulsifiers (Soy Lecithin), Artificial Color (Red #40... -
Merika, I haven't heard that about soy, but I heard that same theory about the casein molecule. I have not found any scientific evidence yet to support that theory though. Has anyone else found any "proof" of these claims? Just curious. I may just not be looking in the right place and I wouldn't want to say that the claims were false without knowing...

ARCHIVED Yosemite, Mariposa, Mammoth, Tahoe
gf4life replied to Emme999's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Michelle, I am going to Yosemite next week also! They will have plently of gluten free food available at the Yosemite Lodge (we will be there Monday for dinner), at Curry Village Buffet (we are planning on Tuesday for dinner) and then we are planning lunch at the Food Court on Wednesday. They like to know about a day ahead of time where you will eat... -
I am allergic to soy. When I eat soy sauce, soy protein, soy flour, etc. then I get itchy (really bad, all over my body). I had trouble breathing once after I ate some soy cheese. I didn't try that one twice! I seem to be fine with the soy oils. For a IgE related allergy it is usually just the soy protein that will trigger a reaction, only a small...

I am busy packing to leave town. We are heading south to LA, mainly to see the King Tut exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. We are all excited about it, but I still get a bit nervous when we travel. You know...the food issue. We try to stick to safe restaurants, and we take snacks with us EVERYWHERE, but what is a supposedly safe restaurant...

ARCHIVED Glutano Products
gf4life replied to mandigirl1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I second that opinion! We like the fruit flavored ones, but the chocolate ones really are nasty! Only a few people on the two message boards I belong to have said they actually liked them. They were very bitter and just tasted bad. Not to mention what they look like. My kids thought they looked like dog poop that you find dried up outside! It doesn... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests...
gf4life replied to Rachel--24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kaiti, You are correct. They also test for the genes that are not yet considered Celiac genes, but also cause gluten intolerance. In my family we have two with Celiac genes and two with gluten intolerance genes, and although my husband is yet to be tested, he should also have the same gene combo as my middle child. Otherwise I don't see how my children... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests...
gf4life replied to Rachel--24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually the stool test checks for all those things, EXCEPT the genes. The gene test is done using a skin cell sample taken from the lining of the cheeks (collected using a set of swab sticks). It is a separate test and also done by a separate genetics lab. You can order it through Enterolab and the results come through them as well, but it is NOT done... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests...
gf4life replied to Rachel--24's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was negative on the tTg test and all the other bloodtests as well. I went gluten free since the doctor said she wouldn't do the biopsy, then she changed her mind. I scheduled the biopsy for two months later and went back on gluten. I ate *TONS* of gluten for two months, and although I got terribly ill, it was not long enough to cause damage consistent... -
ARCHIVED What To Do About Breakfast On Vacations
gf4life replied to Aprildncr's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Oh, we love the Glutino Cereal bars. Interesting that you thought the apple flavor was kind of sour. My friend thought the apple ones were too sweet. I think they are great. I only eat the fruit ones though, the chocolate tasted nasty to me. For those of you who haven't tried these, they are like a thick fruit newton cookie only about 2-3 times... -
I don't remember much about my life before I was 3 years old. My mom passed away almost 9 years ago and my dad wasn't around much when I was a baby, so I have no one to ask if I had problems then. The first health problems I remember happened when I was 4 years old.I encountered a few traumatic events as a child. I know that any traumatic event can trigger...

Well I think I managed to stay gluten-free at the church nusery today. Not always possible with all the kiddies eating their crackers and cookies...I came home, changed my crumb/saliva smeared clothes and scrubbed my hands. I made sure I didn't eat anything while I was there and didn't touch my mounth, but I still get nervous. I am glad it is only once...

ARCHIVED 'breakfast In America'
gf4life replied to Ray H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ray, If you are able to go to the Whole Foods store when you get here, then you should also be able to find Health Valley Rice Crunch'Ems and Corn Crunch'Ems. They are like Chex cereal here in the US, but they don't have the malt that is found in almost every cereal at the regular grocery store! They are very tasty. Also we like Perky's Nutty Rice.... -
ARCHIVED No Wheat Starch Allowed In Us?
gf4life replied to Misa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have to agree with Tiffany. The wheat starch here isn't a high enough quality to be gluten free. I have a wheat starch story... I licked the knife after frosting some gluten free cupcakes for my daughers birthday party. It was a different brand than I usually use and it was really tasty. So as I take a spoonful and pop it into my mouth, I casually...
