  1. Congrats on the trip! I live in Germany, have for 10 years...lived in Italy for 2 years, and we travel alot. Get your cards ready and be prepared to ask questions. I have found that most understand "allergy" and will work with you but you have to get your point across so they understand that you cannot have foods with breading or sauces (gravy) made with...
  2. It is all a matter of trial and error sometimes to figure these things out. I personally was having trouble with certain veggies like cabbage, cauliflower causing gassy bloated issues. Then my sugars started bothering me but what I could nto understand is it seemed more than just fruit and refined sugar. I finally took all grains out of my diet as well as...
  3. Wow! Awesome!! Never been, thanks for sharing. Something to keep in mind.
  4. You are talking a child so this might not apply. I could not eat dairy and I did try to lactose enzymes. I found the one that you take prior to eating dairy simply did not work for me. The one that you took daily did as long as I took 2 a day. Is it possible to hat it is not the lactose supplement that is making her sick but that it is not enough and it...
  5. You said your glucose was fine....did you have a 2 hour glucose test? just a regular blood test for diabetes does not show how glucose is effecting your body. If they did not perform the 2 hour glucose I would highly encourage it. I am prediabtic, had been tested several times for diabetes and all tests were negative until they did the 2 hour glucose.

    ARCHIVED "Don

Skylark, I think it is like anything else....there's lots of difference thoughts are various foods as to whether they are good or bad for you. I think a prson has to weigh the info and decide for themselves. This instructor was saying that coffee is loaded with all kinds of chemicals which happens in the processing before it goes to the grocery store shelves...
  7. Aged cheeses do not have lactose, the aging process loses the lactose (sugar), say is true for your good yogurts that are all sugar. If cheddar cheese is bothering you I would say it was lactose. If age cheese like parmesian (actual brick) is bothering you I would say it is casein (protein). There's other things in ice cream besides lactose they could be...

    ARCHIVED "Don

Before I was diagnosed with celiac I took a short course on how to raise your metabolism. At the time I thought my problems was that my metabolism had slowed and it just needed a kick-start. In the class the instructor spoke about the various things that polute the liver and coffee was one. Stress, prescript meds, injected meats and pesticides on fruits and...
  9. Thanks, I have not yet had issues with them but I will keep that in mind.

ARCHIVED Doctors Who Have No Clue

Pain under the left side of the rib cage could be many thing...back pain, spleen which run along side the ribs, or it could be the pancreas. Open Original Shared Link Pain under the right side in the gallbadder Open Original Shared Link Your spleen and pancreas can become irritated and can swell and will cause this pain. I did an herbal liver cleanse...
  11. It is really an adjustment for the whole family and even your friends. My husband would speak for me when we were out with friends and he would tell them my system was messed up and I just needed to see if time would make a difference, that was after the diagnosis. My mom thinks the gluten-free diets are in people's heads and she definatly does not agree...
  12. I use Free & Clear shampoo and conditioner, body, lotion, hairspray, liq hand soap and have had no reaction. Also, Yes to Carrots hair products have worked well for me. Really makes my hair soft and shiny.
  13. We lived in Italy for 2 years, loved it! We found Rome super to get around by city bus, cheap too. Wonderful thing about Italy is they are very big on their veggies so you ahve all kinds of wonderful dishes without the worry of sauces of gluten. Keep your valuables in a real safe place. A family member was nearly robbed during a visit but police in street...
  14. Hang in there! I too can tell you a list of horror stories with military medical. If you have the option to go off base, do so and if you have to get a referral, try. I have had to deal with the system for 20 years and while I am thankful we have the medical, you sometimes just do not get good medical attention....plain and simple. I have been on a gluten...
  15. There's wonderful safe vitamin guidelines on the Internet. I know some docs have prescribed large amounts to patients who are struggling to absorb. Many of us really do need these vits to help us regain our health but like the original post says we do all have to be careful with certain vitamins but that should not scare off anyone in need. B vits have...
  16. Both my adult daughters were already gluten-free. One of them convinced me to try and that's when I figured out my own issues with gluten. The one child left at home, and my husband, eat all gluten-free at home but of course eat differntly when out of the house. I wish I could convince them to always be gluten-free as I think they would both feel better.
  17. Yes, I too was doing that 2 steps fwd, 1 step back. I too had the fatigue, muscle weakness, off-balance, brain fog. Definately get the thyroid checked but also really make sure of your diet.....no gluten in anything. I had to really do a thorough clean up with my kitchen and all the products I was using. My balance came back when I really cleaned up my gluten...
  18. The questions are common, I have thought them all myself......how can the person at the table next to me eat burger buns and I can't? Is this in my head? Why can my husband eat a huge plate of pasta and he has no issues? Am I imagining my own problems? Especially for those who don't have an actual diagnosis, these questions can be even more powerful. What...
  19. Caroline, I don't know if this helps you at all, I am still rather baffled myself and not sure I have the answer. I took all grains, refined sugar and all fruit out of my diet. I did this to give my pancreas some relief. I did a hair strand test and while these are not always accurate it indicated I had an intolerence to rice and corn. The next week I was...
  20. I do so understand! Here's a thought though....rather than begrudge the potluck and feel almost excluded because there is no food you can eat but your own, how about asking if your fee could be waved and explain the situation for the next get-together. That way you could still participate without the expense of food you won't be able to consume. Last...
  21. IrishHeart, by floaters do you mean these little things that you can see that seem to be on the surface of the eye? I have them, most the time not many but when I was having trouble with my blood sugar they were alot more. Do you take any vit A? My doc approved me for 2500 IU daily but I do know I have to be careful. Was taking cod liver before and after...
  22. Really, I think there is a huge lack of knowledge eventhough they are trying and no doubt very limted with resources. It can get you down but I find I do better when I focus on what I can have and when eating out I really try to be extra safe and so with the salads normally, making sure not croutons are added and if there is meat in the salad I ask if there...
  23. Not me, good for you! best to you for continued improvement!! IrishHeart, I find it interesting that you too had problems with blurred vision. That was one of my first signs that something was wrong. Have you found any other reason or way to improve your vision? For me, eye doc said my eyes were good. I had several diabetes tests all came back negative...
  24. Thanks fopr sharing that story, it is inspiring! I am now 2 weeks into a no grain diet/ dairy-free, thought it would impossible at one point and when people said they were grain free I was feeling pretty lucky that I thought I didn't have to do the same. But I tell you, I have never felt better. I have been doing my glucose readings.....first week a little...
  25. Been on a gluten-free diet now for a year. The year has been a very hard and challenging one to say the least. So many issues have bore their ugly head and one by one I have stomped out the fire to keep my body going. What I can say, as much as I seem to have taken 2 steps fwd and 1 step back, I have improved. The diet REALLY does help and persistance pays...
