  1. All I know is that 20% of Crohn's patients are Celiac... My cousin has Crohn's so I looked into it to that degree.
  2. I went gluten-free without antibody testing because they (doctors) were trying anything to get rid of my rash. The suggestion was based on my already dx'ed Hashimotos and the success many patients have going gluten-free. In addition to the rash I had unresolved thyroid issues that going gluten-free is known to resolve. While the link between Hashis and gluten...
  3. There's a 20% chance a Crohn's patient will be Celiac. Both are autoimmune diseases. Both are genetic (Celiac has clearer markers than Crohn's). You are at HIGHER risk with a dx'ed autoimmune disease in your parent. Celiac can trigger at any time, and just because she had a negative test then doesn't mean she's negative now. Btw gluten is inflammatory...
  4. Yep, I learned one glass is great and two is too much. Now I'm a cheap cheap date.
  5. So I guess I'll stop wondering "what if".... Still debating on eating sushi, cheesecake and souffle again and going in for a skin biopsy to see if it's DH....
  6. I think the damage is assumed in 90% of DH patients. Its just very patchy so for the first time common sense is used and they don't try to find it on endoscopy. I don't know when they came up with that rule... I'd like to see a new method of dx'ing DH since its difficult and Derms hesitate to even attempt it. I think a lot of it is misdiagnosed. I...
  7. Did they dx your DH by biopsy? If so that's very interesting. I guess it's all in your skin?? Ooops, just reread your OP. Duh. Have you considered chronic "heat hives"? Celiacs have lots of skin issues.... Hives are not uncommon. Ice packs help me, and others with various skin conditions. I like Vanicream lotion as a moisturizer. I use Vaseline if I...
  8. I had two steroid shots and a week of prednisone 2 months prior to starting gluten-free. Hmmm... They say the shots can stayaffective 3-6 months.
  9. Wow. I would have beat the living crap of those people in the hospital, btw. After I could stand to move...that's AWFUL. I am sensitive to iodone (sushi gives me a red spot where I usually break out), and I think too much iodone at Thanksgiving sent my antibodies flaring... I'm lucky I can withdraw iodine and snuff out the rash. I was back on all food...
  10. Really? You got it to go away while on gluten? That's WILD. Effing rash....
  11. If you want interesting reading try some stuff about food plants of the Sonoran desert. Not a lot of grasses (for obvious reasons) but its extremely interesting reading nutritionally, especially in the context of modern health problems in native populations. Talk about efficient machinery - I mean the bodies and digestive/nutritional system of Native Americans...
  12. Really? How long does the steroid effect last? Wow, the more I learn the more I'm convinced I wouldn't have tested positive if I'd done it. Maybe the Hashis would have helped boost the scores but otherwise it sounds like I'd be neg all around (steroids, DH, neuro, no GI symptoms except d).
  13. Perhaps another group, reasonably nearby knows of one you can ask for a referral? I've noticed Celiac specialists seem to network...if you can find a Celiac nutritionist somewhat nearby that may be your best bet for a local referral.
  14. Schwarzbein is an endocrinologist, I believe, so she probably takes a different pov. And it isn't gluten-free- friendly (except from the perspective of carbs, unless she changed things-I read it YEARS ago). Anyway, she won't be gluten-free focused but probably friendly??? Does that make sense?
  15. Did you make the guacamole or purchase it? Did you eat it on chips?
  16. Oh gawd, heart disease diets are typically packed with whole grains and low fat foods.my FIL has heart disease and you should hear what is "good" for him. Made my toes curl BEFORE gluten-free. Now it makes me want to scream. The closest gluten-free heart friendly reading I can think if is Dr. Schwarzbein. Google her.
  17. No reco except advice to contact a local Celiac support group. They can usually reco someone.
  18. If you can handle milk you can froth your milk/cream/half n half and add extracts (vanilla, peppermint, almond, etc.). A tiny drop of extract goes a loooong way.
  19. Funny because his mom buys them to be healhy and I DON'T buy them to be healthy .
  20. Well, all I can say is unfortunately we all have our freaky little things. I can't do food preservatives - the natural ones are better but the synthetic ones send me over the edge. Red food dyes - FORGET ABOUT IT. Iodine and gums are tough ones because iodine levels are high in lots of whole foods. Xanthan gum is in so many gluten-free processed foods...
  21. I always like the sweet and salty and spicy ones... Check The Popcorn Factory website and see what flavors they have. Cheating, I know, but hey...
  22. Typically cover crops are not allowed to sprout/seed/etc., its part of the nitrogen fixing process (although I usually hear about legumes, but whatever...). I doubt oats are fixing nitrogen, they are probably preventing erosion and adding biomass but again, whatever... I don't know if your problem is with the plant or the seed. There's always the chance...
  23. Had a great lunch today and tried Cidre Bouche Brut de Normandie sparkling cider. Fabulous and very different. Bubbly like champagne but reminded me of Lambic. A must try!
  24. I had someone tell me his mom buys gluten-free processed stuff because she thinks it's healthier. I could tell he didn't buy it...he was quite interested in what I had to say, especially hearing that I'm on the gluten-free diet for a medical reason. He also thought it was funny that I buy very few gluten-free processed products.
  25. I'm a low risk genetically, for Celiac, if you are narrowing it down to dq2, dq8. I'm half dq2, half a translated 8... But apparently, it doesn't matter if the SOB triggers. Read the fine print...I bet it says other factors contribute to risk like other autoimmune diseases.
