ARCHIVED Chronic Urticaria (Hives) Common For celiac disease?
pricklypear1971 replied to helenln0's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you are still looking at this, first, I hope things have improved. Second, you can't dx DH, IMO, by "how it looks. It can look very different person to person. If your rash is triggered by gluten (in the beginning of gluten-free this is difficult to determine) or foods that are medium-high in iodine then I'd strongly suspect DH - especially in a person... -
ARCHIVED Sooo Mad! /mums/allergy Tests!
pricklypear1971 replied to jhol's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Potato/potatoe..... It seems gluten issues in general are genetic. Didn't mention my dad had food allergy testing and it came back + for EVERYTHING..... I drew the "gluten screwed" card, I think. Genetics are just grand. -
ARCHIVED Sooo Mad! /mums/allergy Tests!
pricklypear1971 replied to jhol's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Try having this convo in two years, when she's watched you go gluten-free (and whatever else f) and still refuses to be tested for celiac disease or stop eating gluten. Or get hormone/thyroid labs past tsh. And when she tells you she thinks she going to develop Alzheimer's....try not to strangle her. This is after you've explained gluten can cause neuro... -
ARCHIVED Whole Body Stiffness
pricklypear1971 replied to tigerlily6200's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac and nutritional deficiencies do play a big role, in my experience. However, don't underestimate hypothyroidism's role. In short, despite being on t3/t4 meds for years and receiving some relief in symptoms - I was not getting adequate absorption. This leads to suboptimal levels if t3/t4, too much rt3, stressed adrenals (I also have steroid damage... -
ARCHIVED Seasonal Allergies... Or A Head Cold....
pricklypear1971 replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get a fever with allergies. A head cold screams head cold to me -when I have one there's no doubt (meaning I know it when I feel it and don't question). I'm never sure if allergies are flu or allergies until I take allergy meds and I improve. Takes 2-3 days, improving each day. Flu would only get worse. I always get hit at least once each winter with... -
ARCHIVED Histamine Levels & Dh ?
pricklypear1971 replied to sisterlynr's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Each person responds differently to antihistimines. They are not all "equal" according to your body. Some people respond to an h1, others to a h2 blocker. As far as I can tell, Singulair is neither an h1 or h2 but a different class - as patients combine h1 and h2 meds with Singulair. That doesn't mean it won't work - I just don't tknow if it has the same... -
I found there's nothing as effective as promising to punch the dentist, to have them double check of you are pain free. I offered that solution to probably the BEST dentist I've ever had - all 6' 4+ of him. Gentlest giant on the planet...and he made sure I was comfy. I miss that man. Like I could have done damage...I'm a foot shorter and half his size...

ARCHIVED Could The Seizure Have Caused The Celiac's?
pricklypear1971 replied to cscevans718's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
All I can offer is that when many mysterious things that can't be explained happen - food intolerances or Celiac seem to be involved. Testing can be difficult in children. Ultimately you may have to do a strict gluten-free trial with all to figure it out. Do get copies of bloodwork done to verify ALL Celiac tests were performed. All it takes is one to... -
ARCHIVED Ag Haircare Products
pricklypear1971 replied to Chippy28's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is a way that some businesses try to convince people their product has added value. Some people will do ok with hydrolyzed products, others won't. Some will say its gluten-free, others will say it isn't. Since there isn't a gluten-free standard in the US for food or drugs - they can say whatever they want. I wouldn't use it, but that's me. -
ARCHIVED Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria And Angioedema
pricklypear1971 replied to thleensd's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Take it off every chance you can get. I'm not kidding, buy a cheap one and cut the arm holes out larger, if you have to. Ice packs. Have a freezer at work? Take some. Try some numbing cream/liquid and dab it. -
ARCHIVED Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria And Angioedema
pricklypear1971 replied to thleensd's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ugh. Wear sleeves that let it breathe. Dove antiperspirant/deoderant was ok as was Tom's. don't use a salt deoderant-burns like a sob. Moisturize. Ice packs every chance you get. I'd slough off the scabs in the shower - just gently rub with your fingers. Wear a bra that doesn't rub it. I bought cheap jms/playtex at Walmart because they'd get... -
ARCHIVED Histamine Levels & Dh ?
pricklypear1971 replied to sisterlynr's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I think the doxepin made me so stoned it just didn't register . That stuff is wicked...ugh. -
ARCHIVED Histamine Levels & Dh ?
pricklypear1971 replied to sisterlynr's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Taking antihistamines never helped much for my DH. Perhaps the doxepin dampened it a bit , but I still had an active rash with the usual itching. They do help if I get whacked with an AI flare and feel like I have the "gluten flu", or "AI flu". Then again, I also have seasonal allergies and if the two collide, look out. I'm taking 1 Claritin/day right now... -
ARCHIVED How Long For Symptons To Go Away After Starting gluten-free Diet
pricklypear1971 replied to erac6329's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That steroid shot, and if it was a steroid cream... May be why you tested negative on Celiac tests. Steroids are a contradiction to testing...they are used to send celiac into remission. I haven't ever seen a firm timeline on steroid use and testing problems...if you use them within 3 months of testing? Maybe it's 1...who knows. -
ARCHIVED Histamine Levels & Dh ?
pricklypear1971 replied to sisterlynr's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Antihistamines can suppress autoimmune response. That's probably why you experience some relief. It's seen with AI across the board - not just DH. I get some relief from antihistimines. Your other questions...I can't address. No dimpling for me, unless you're talking about aging and fat - and I do have some of that. Unfortunately.... I didn't have dark... -

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed- College Student, Overwhelmed!
pricklypear1971 replied to katiehammond's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just so you don't feel alone, I used to have that type of pain. My gluten symptoms have changed over the years, so don't despair (for better or worse), they may change. -
ARCHIVED A Few Weeks Recovering... Body Odor?
pricklypear1971 replied to quirozson's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Another thing to try is to exfoliate your pits. I had horrible underarm bo with my DH (rash was under my arms), and my derm told me that all of the swelling and scabbing was clogging stuff up. He told me to gently (remember the rash) remove scabs that were there as they were ready to come off. It did help. So, try a gentle exfoliant? Sugar will do it... -
ARCHIVED Newly Gluten-Free, Over-Sleeping
pricklypear1971 replied to GoBuckwheat's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, healing makes you sleepy. Allergies and glutenings don't help. It will lessen in time. Keep personal copies of all lab reports. Keep a diary of symptoms or put them on a calendar. If docs go in circles start cutting. Be honest with them and tell them they aren't working for you. No need to be rude, but it benefits no one if you don't speak up. Perhaps... -
ARCHIVED Could Be Celiac? Starting Gluten Free?
pricklypear1971 replied to Erbear289's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are gaining 10 lbs in one week you need extensive thyroid testing. Hashimotos/tpo antibodies Free t3 Free t4 Total t3/t4 Reverse t3 for baseline Tsh - not worth much but idiot docs want it If your doc won't order those you can order them yourself from online labs - same lab, just an online service gives you the order. Ditto for Celiac blood... -
ARCHIVED A Few Weeks Recovering... Body Odor?
pricklypear1971 replied to quirozson's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Honestly, as long as you don't sprout wings and fly off, consider it "normal"? If gluten is your problem, and you effectively go gluten-free - weird (but generally good) things happen. Roll with it, and roll with a new deoderant? Things will keep changing. You may smell like roses soon. -

ARCHIVED 18M Old - With Genetics Against Her
pricklypear1971 replied to Aprilelayne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Honestly, I don't think you can determine if she has allergies vs. intolerances at this point. Allergies can be missed during testing, and there aren't reliable tests for intolerances. Over time, an allergic reaction may become crystal clear, unfortunately. I wouldn't be surprised if all the testing comes up with no definitive answer...just evidence of reflux... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Or Not?
pricklypear1971 replied to Dozey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sounds like your doc is a bit more up to date on research than most! Great news for you. Proceed with testing (and find out if you're Hashis). -
ARCHIVED Ag Haircare Products
pricklypear1971 replied to Chippy28's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Depends. Some react, some don't. You're going to get forty opinions here ...be prepared. In short, a Celiac reaction shouldn't happen unless gluten hits a mucous membrane; however, some people react from cosmetics/beauty products for unknown reasons (allergy, etc.) and some people refuse to believe those people are having 1) a gluten reaction (Celiac or...
