ARCHIVED Why Can't I Lose Weight?
pricklypear1971 replied to ButterflyChaser's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Over exercising will cause swelling. You are over exercising. As a person with an AI condition it is a delicate balancing act. Too little or wrong type of exercise-nada. Too much - body rebellion. Thyroid/hormones off -swelling. My doctor told me no more than 1 hour per day, every other day. I rebelled against her advice til I was so exhausted (plus injury... -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Gluten Free List
pricklypear1971 replied to plittrell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are quite a few threads on here about TJ's. I buy dairy products, veggies, fruit, etc. there. I do stick to processed products at TJ's that are not made in shared lines when it comes to nut products, dry fruit and desserts. I don't buy their chips, either. Part of it is the ability to choose (since they disclose factory info quite often). The other... -

I wonder if you're getting a bacteria (or whatever could cause stomach upset) off the carton. Are you washing it off with soap and water? -
ARCHIVED Hashimoto's Testing While Gluten-Free?
pricklypear1971 replied to Irishgirl76's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've had several tpo tests after going gluten-free. They are all over the place. Once almost normal, once out of the ballpark, once somewhere in between. Levels vary. If you come up negative perhaps ask to be retested later to be sure. I've never tested "normal", but it may not be impossible. Someday ? -
ARCHIVED I Hope The Derm Has Answers For Me!
pricklypear1971 replied to MandeeTheGreat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Honestly, if you have a derm that listened to your symptoms and put the rash together with your reaction to gluten then I'd assume its correct. Count yourself lucky it was even considered. I do agree you need other basic tests like vitamin levels. nutritional deficiencies from celiac can be quite destructive. Also basic blood panels, including thyroid/Hashimotos... -

What type of doctor do you see? Are you on vitamin/mineral supplaments? Are you on adrenal supplaments? Hormone supplaments? I'll be brief because of time constraints. You may have high rt3. That can screw up weight loss. You can be swelling from AI in general, and that affects your workouts. You may be overdoing it. Actually, I'd almost be assured... -
ARCHIVED Dermatitis Herpetiformis ( And Other Rashes)
pricklypear1971 replied to Chefwife8's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
The lady at the lab is misinformed. It is commonly mentioned in studies and medical literature that steroids can influence celiac testing. -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed. "no" Symptoms. What Do I Do?
pricklypear1971 replied to argybargy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You have to learn to figure out where you're going to eat-then determine if they can accommodate gluten-free. It's an art. It's easier if business functions repeat locations, but if not, sigh...just more work for you. Always have a snack - including a protein. Nuts are shelf-stable, dried fruit. Make your own trail mix. Boring but it works. Your new fast... -
ARCHIVED Dermatitis Herpetiformis ( And Other Rashes)
pricklypear1971 replied to Chefwife8's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
On and off steroids for 2 years definitely can contribute to a false negative result. Every doctor I've seen, when I've described my steroid rx's around the time I could have been tested have shook their heads... So, if your blood work comes up positive that's fabulous. If its negative do not discount it may be Celiac. -
ARCHIVED When A Pancake Is A Paincake
pricklypear1971 replied to RiceGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use a combo of sorghum superfine white, potato starch, tapioca starch. I actually went back to using my "gluten" recipe and subbing milk with buttermilk. All else stayed the same (including egg). I use extra light olive oil as a fat. I do cook in butter but found the recipe performs better using oil in the mix. I had thought of trying carbonated water... -

Thanks! We have a family friend who is Korean (and has moved) and she made the best rice balls. I want those rice balls. Now. And my son loves sushi, and rice.... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pizza
pricklypear1971 replied to keeponsingin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like thin, crunchy crusts. I actually figured out you can make one using most gluten-free pizza dough recipes by putting in less liquid. Duh! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pizza
pricklypear1971 replied to keeponsingin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's flaky and has more flavor. I don't want to say "like their French bread" but if you've had it you'll recognize it. It's just different. Not soggy. -

And if you can stand it, put ice packs on the itchy spots. That does help. -

pricklypear1971 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That IS a difficult thing, when people mean well and to be safe you just have to say no. Sometimes it would be safe, other times no. But there's no way for YOU to know. -
ARCHIVED I Glutened Myself :(

I'm sorry. I know it's terrible. I had a freak out moment today, after eating sushi last night...thought I was having a reaction but turned out no. Makes you change your plans in two seconds. Ugh. -

Ooh, how do you make your rice balls? Just plain rice or do you add something to make them stick? -

You'll get the hang of it. And next time (I'm not kidding) grab gluten-free lunch meat. Generally (but always read the label) it's a safer bet and will probably hold you better than the bar. Add an apple or other fruit if you need sugar/carbs. All available in your friendly grocery store! -

It's sort of in the middle. The texture and taste are very different than others. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pizza
pricklypear1971 replied to keeponsingin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you can find it, Against The Grain makes a very good premade pizza and also a plain pizza crust. I find it at a natural foods market. I think I've seen a premade pizza of theirs at Whole Foods...but can't be sure. -
ARCHIVED Changing My Life Style And I Need Advice
pricklypear1971 replied to TightLoli's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I believe that Chipotle brings in the flour tortillas pre-made. So, it may only be an issue of touching the tortilla and not airborne contamination. I always see the employees wearing gloves. Yes, you'd have to be careful; however, compared to most restaurants I think it would be very low risk. I hear great things about working for Chipotle. I'd... -
ARCHIVED So Sick, And Not Sure Where To Go
pricklypear1971 replied to ImagineEscape's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can order the tests yourself from an online lab. Open Original Shared Link If it's in your budget, and you can get to a lab draw location I'd try this before going gluten-free. Because if gluten-free works for you, I doubt you'll want to go back on it for testing later. -
ARCHIVED Dh As An Indicator Of Gluten Ingestion?
pricklypear1971 replied to zamm0's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Elocon is a topical steroid. My experience was even after weaning off of my topical, and using barely enough to dampen the tip of a qtip, when I finally went cold turkey for a few days....whammo. Outbreak. So, I wouldn't assume you've ingested gluten if you're weaning off. I'd assume you're going through that typical steroid withdrawal bounce-back...
