pricklypear1971 replied to Dozey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your hypothyroidism is Hashimotos Disease, you already have one autoimmune disease and are at increased risk for a second - like Celiac. You warrant a complete and thorough work up for ALL autoimmune diseases. Read these fact sheets and discuss this with your doctor. I hope you get the help you need to feel better. ARCHIVED Please Help - Glutening
pricklypear1971 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have had a fever now and then when "something" was going on. I've even noticed I get a fever from allergy attacks (before I figure out its allergies, not a flu, during allergy season). I take a Tylenol, it helps. I eat and drink whatever sounds good (gluten-free, of course). I also get DH outbreaks when I have a true virus. Ironically, that's how... -
ARCHIVED Weight Loss, Excess Skin
pricklypear1971 replied to Celiac Mindwarp's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Exercise will only help. It will help you lose inches, not necessarily weight, especially if your muscles were atrophied. Just don't over exercise any one group. One thing I've learned is your body is your body - if your butt is big there's nothing that will change it - so tone the hell out of it and stick it out there and shake it. Bras - don't get... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate
pricklypear1971 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Ghiradelli. I know their white chocolate bars are gluten-free, as well as their semi and milk chips. I would check their semi and milk bars. See's Chocolates has some gluten-free chocolates. Don't know if you have them there. Toblerone (plain) is gluten-free. Seriously. So are Snickers. -
ARCHIVED Weight Loss, Excess Skin
pricklypear1971 replied to Celiac Mindwarp's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've always heard that's more likely to happen if the weight loss is fast. And 30 lbs since Jan. 2013 is fast. Perhaps it will firm up? Are you exercising to tone muscle? That can help sometimes, depending on where it's at. -
ARCHIVED Blood Sugar Balancing Act - Any Tips For Preventing Hypoglycemia?
pricklypear1971 replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep. That's a protein. -
ARCHIVED Question About Snacks For A Tween
pricklypear1971 replied to blmoreschi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My son is picky like that. It has to be "perfect", or he wrinkles his nose. I'm making him cook now, because I'm tired. I understand its his palate, but still...it has morphed into a beast of its own. Oh, try popcorn. Pop a bag and pack it in ziplocks. Keeps for a week. -
ARCHIVED Blood Sugar Balancing Act - Any Tips For Preventing Hypoglycemia?
pricklypear1971 replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For me, fiber. If I eat lots of veggies throughout the day, and fibrous legumes-it helps. I also had to take it easy on grain based products and eat nut flour based sweets/breads. And I cut my sugar by 3/4. Protein with every meal. Nuts were ok, but not as good as animal protein. I was having swings in glucose levels. When I'd dip low I'd need 1... -
ARCHIVED How Fast Does Gluten Affect Behavior?
pricklypear1971 replied to RochelleJanine's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's different for everyone. If you can rule sugar out, and what's left is gluten...well, if the shoe fits... I would note if the sugar source was honey, sugar cane, beet, etc. some people are sensitive to sugar but not honey, for example. -
ARCHIVED Question About Snacks For A Tween
pricklypear1971 replied to blmoreschi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kind Bars are the only bars I can stomach. The rest - yuck. Jerky. I found a great brand at Costco - pork teriyaki that was gluten-free. Can't remember the name. They also have some of those prepackaged gluten-free meals GoPicnic or some name like that. My thyroid is showing, can't remember names...sorry. -
ARCHIVED Am I Being Hypochodriac?
pricklypear1971 replied to bartfull's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
We're they organic, free of sulphites (or sulfates or whatever they put on them to "preserve freshness")? Some people react to that stuff. Or it could have been iodine. For me, potatoes did it - even peeled. I think we all have our little buttons...and don't get me started on carageenan. Ugh. Btw, I had a DH outbreak last week. Very very mild but I... -
ARCHIVED What To Expect, When
pricklypear1971 replied to Pam M's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It took about 9 months for me to settle into a normal bathroom routine. C was a big gluten symptom for me, as it turned out. When I first started getting "regular" I thought I was getting D, and was irritated that I had to go more often. Go figure. -
ARCHIVED Dapsone Resurrected For Chronic Urticaria - Article
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I wonder about sample bias. Were they ever screened for DH or Celiac prior to being admitted to the study? You generally don't get to chronic urticaria without a few doctor visits. What was ruled out? -

Apparently, I can't link to it without using my personal account. Sigh. Medscape is free and open to all. I included the title and author. Some days.... -
ARCHIVED Sauerkraut-Very Bad Reaction.
pricklypear1971 replied to Gin52's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mine was right at 22 1/2 hours. Now I think it's gone to 5 minutes. Seriously. What kind of ride am I on??? -
Yes, thyroid and adrenals. If you do have thyroid issues and the palps and don't resolve with treatment it could be adrenals, could be iron levels in conjunction with thyroid/adrenals.

ARCHIVED Sauerkraut-Very Bad Reaction.
pricklypear1971 replied to Gin52's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree, if you are sensitive to gluten and are eating it, all bets are off. I have has reactions 24 hours after eating from cross contamination. 24 hours. Now, in retrospect I NEVER could have connected my stomach upset with gluten, without going gluten-free for a long period (then experiencing a glutening). I mean, who in the hell gets sick from what... -
ARCHIVED Dapsone Resurrected For Chronic Urticaria - Article
pricklypear1971 posted a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
This was in my inbox this morning. Would take further reading to find out if test subjects were screened for DH or Celiac. Apparently, I can't link to the article without going into my personal account.... so, here's the info. Go to Medscape http://www.medscape.com and get a free account, and you can read it. Dapsone Resurrected for Chronic... -
Yes, it's hard to trust publicly available gluten-free food, especially if you don't know the brand or can't question the chef. Sometimes I feel like by eating at a new place I'm performing an act equivalent to skydiving.

ARCHIVED Exasperated By Daily Nausea And Migrains
pricklypear1971 replied to Ciel121's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I suggest starting a food log now, and take it to your appointment. In the interim, you may notice a certain food causes an issue - not unusual for Celiacs to develop another intolerance. Personally, I've had bad headaches with accompanying nausea this spring. Allergies are terrible here this year and I'm taking so much med I get dehydrated which leads... -
As far as homeopathy goes, yes, I've used some homeopathic allergy pills and they work reasonably well during some allergy attacks. If pharmaceuticals seem to be overkill, there's no reason not to try homeopathics; however, I urge you not to consider them harmless even at a strong dilution. As far as the other stuff goes, I have no idea. I do know healing...

ARCHIVED Asahi = Not Gluten Free
pricklypear1971 replied to quirozson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just a note here, I've never found an Asian rice-based beer that is gluten-free. Doesnt mean they arent out there, but I've never found one in the US. The only beers I've found that are gluten-free are marketed as "gluten-free"...and some of those aren't if they contain barley. I think they call those "low gluten" now?? Apple/pear cider is another story... -
ARCHIVED Baking With Sweet White Rice Flour
pricklypear1971 replied to poptart87's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've heard to use it judiciously since it can make things gummy. I did use one mix containing it; can't remember what it was, though. I use it for rouxs. -
ARCHIVED Yummy Sub For Potatos
pricklypear1971 replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Artichokes will do great in a pot. You could take it in during the winter. They grow in AZ - surely they'll grow there!
