ARCHIVED Need Tips To Safely Be Gluten Free And Keep My Family On Gluten
BabsV replied to Christine0125's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am the only gluten-free person in our family and we have a kitchen that contains some gluten (not much however -- bread, cookies, some chips.) After a major clean of the cabinets and drawers (and their contents) I designated specific shelves and cupboards for gluteny (gluteney?!?!) items -- always the lowest shelf so that if any crumbs or anything is going... -

ARCHIVED How To Clean/clear Gluten Out? How Much Did You Do?
BabsV replied to mamaupupup's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did what you've listed. I cleaned all surfaces with soap and water -- especially handles on cupboards. Cleaned the oven. I cleaned out all drawers and washed anything in the drawers that might have come into contact with a gluten containing ingredient. Wiped down the outside of jars of spices/herbs -- anything I might have used while cooking/baking with... -

				ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances
BabsV replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks for all your replies. I'll go back to keeping the detailed food diary (I have to admit to slacking off a bit lately) and I think I'll go back to a simpler diet for several weeks. I just want the pain to improve because it started almost a year ago and honestly, I am just sick of it! -

				ARCHIVED Weird Question
BabsV replied to Molly Susan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have a very similar pain although mine is not quite at the bottom rib -- it is a couple of ribs higher! I've been gluten-free for 6 months and while it is slightly better it is still a major problem for me. At a minimum it is uncomfortable and at worst it is excrutiating. Nothing works to make it go away when it flares up -- at least no OTC pain reliever... -

				ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances
BabsV posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So, I'm 6 months gluten-free and my blood tests show that the diet is working and my numbers are coming down nicely. Yay me! On a negative note I am still have a lot of pain issues which are stumping the doctors plus I have days where I know I have no ingested gluten but I have a gluten-like reaction, although not nearly as strong. I'm starting to think... -

				ARCHIVED Glutened By Nailpolish
BabsV replied to dani nero's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not big on make-up except for lipgloss and lipstick -- it has always been my one splurge. I pitched everything upon my diagnosis and went without until I found Red Apple Lipstick. I have been using their stuff with no problem. They are gluten free, paraben free, a bunch of other stuff free! I was not keen on ordering lipstick online since I've always... -

ARCHIVED Question For Those In Europe
BabsV replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm an American who is living in Poland currently and I have Celiac Disease. I've never heard that European wheat has lower gluten levels. One thing that the EU does have is "gluten free wheat flour" (what they call it here in Poland, I think it is called "gluten free wheat starch" in the UK...not sure about anywhere else) which measures at less than... -

ARCHIVED Newly Dx And Feeling Overwhelmed.
BabsV replied to 49erlady's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome! The beginning of the gluten-free adventure (I try to think of it that way versus a challenge) is really hard...a steep learning curve about everything. I'm six months in and I am only now starting to feel like maybe I can pull this all off successfully. It does get easier. I can say that at the beginning I was completely paranoid about the kitchen... -
You will have an amazing time! I found our apartment through a website called oh-rome. From what I can tell it is a Spanish (I think) company that acts as a type of broker for people who rent out flats in different cities in Europe. They had a big selection all over Rome. We went for location over size figuring we wouldn't be spending a lot of time in the...

ARCHIVED How Long For Symptoms To Go Away?
BabsV replied to AlexS's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Every person is probably going to give you a different answer...it depends on how sick you were prior to diagnosis, how strict you are with the diet (it is a steep learning curve and at the beginning I unwittingly glutened myself more than once), how your body heals, etc. There are those who feel better within days or weeks and then those who take longer... -
Wow, this is great info. We aren't far from Prague by car (we're in Krakow, Poland) so we might head down for a long weekend. Thanks for sharing all this.

We spent last week in Rome and I am totally in love with the place. Eating gluten free was absolutely no problem whatsoever...I had my dining cards ready and didn't need them. All I had to say was "I have celiac disease" and the waiters all nodded and ran down what on the menu was ok and then mentioned they had pasta 'senza glutine' if I wanted it. One place...

ARCHIVED Positive Blood Test, Negative Biopsy
BabsV replied to TheFuzz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Were you off gluten before the blood test? If so, for how long? That could impact the results. How many biopsies did they take? Don't they now say 8-11 samples are best yet a lot of doctors take only 3-5? The diet doesn't always work immediately...I'm 6 months in and only in the last 2-3 weeks have I seen a decrease in my pain issues (on some days.) Also... -

				ARCHIVED Cup4Cup gluten-free Flour
BabsV posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One of my friends sent me a bag of William Sonoma's Cup4Cup gluten-free Flour (yes, I have AWESOME friends who have decided they are going to help me with the gluten-free lifestyle as much as possible...I know how lucky I am!) Over the last couple of months I've used it to make 2 cakes, banana bread and zucchini muffins and they've all turned out just... -

BabsV replied to zeeclass6's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease

ARCHIVED I Plan On Opening A Gluten Free Restaurant
BabsV replied to NewGlutenFreeChef's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
OMG! These sound soooo yummy! Thank you. I so want to try them even with these intense Polish onions. I will have to see if my mother can send me corn flour since I've never seen it here in Krakow. -
I'm so sorry about how you feel. We've all been there and it isn't fun. As for your extended family, do they need to be told the results? I mean honestly, if going gluten-free has made you feel better why do they need 'proof'? It really isn't any of their business when it comes down to it. If your kids need to be gluten-free and so do you that is just...

ARCHIVED I Plan On Opening A Gluten Free Restaurant
BabsV replied to NewGlutenFreeChef's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Probably not...will have to investigate when I get back to the States. The onions here in Poland are really really strong flavor-wise. I think the taste would be overpowering... -

ARCHIVED I Plan On Opening A Gluten Free Restaurant
BabsV replied to NewGlutenFreeChef's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
If the restaurant isn't 100% gluten free make sure the servers are trained to work with gluten-free requests competently and pleasantly. The blank stare, confusion or "Oh, I'm sure you can eat that..." which trails off into nothingness totally kills any desire I have to eat there! I second the idea of fried foods that have to be avoided due to cross contamination... -

ARCHIVED Problems With Surgery Related To Gluten Intolerance?
BabsV replied to dws's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yikes! I am sorry but I don't have an answer for you. My best friend (non Celiac) had ankle surgery and developed horrible issues with scar tissue. She ended up having some sort of ultrasound treatment (if I remember properly) that broke it down. It was painful but very effective...Could just be your body and the way it heals -- I am prone to developing adhesions... -
I'm moving back to the States this July (or June if I can get out early!) and I will be going back home to Alexandria, VA. I'm keen to find a good doctor in the NoVA area if anyone knows of one. My GP is good but not knowledgeable about Celiac. Thanks.

Thanks for the tips. I will pull out the fish oil capsules...we've got some. And I will try natural ginger ale -- never even thought of that.

ARCHIVED For The Ladies: Clinique Lipstick -- Help!
BabsV replied to zeeclass6's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yikes! I remember when my favorite lipstick color was discontinued...so disappointing. I've recently found Red Apple Lipstick which is gluten free (and paraben free and a bunch of other stuff free too!) I was leery about buying lipstick online but I did and I love it. The colors are gorgeous and the glosses and lipsticks I've tried have worn really well.... -
I've been suffering abdominal pain and tenderness issues since May 2011 -- since my Celiac diagnosis (August 2011) and going gluten free the pain has lessened but I've still got it. Some days are better than others...but honestly, I am exhausted from dealing with it. Tylenol doesn't help at all. I shouldn't take ibuprofen or naproxen sodium due to past...
