  1. I grew up in Northeastern PA. I've heard the chicken and waffles is more of a southern thing maybe but we were close enough to the Mason-Dixon line to adopt a few of their traditions without giving up being yanks. Mostly though I grew up with the Pennsylvania Dutch cooking traditions which involves baking baking and more baking of poison.
  2. How do people live without chicken and waffles?! (or turkey and waffles as a after turkey substitute) I can't be the only person who grew up eating this at least once a month and usually more often.
  3. I decided at the store last night to try KA waffle mix instead of buying more Bisquick. I was thrilled with how good my waffles turned out. My husband will not put gravy on waffles, I suppose it is because he grew up in CA and not back east where chicken and waffles is a "thing." What a sad and empty childhood he must have had, poor thing. My turkey and...
  4. I've never had it toasted. The last time I had it was before I had a toaster and my toaster recently met a glorious demise. (My MIL moved it from my gluten-free counter to her gluten counter and while I'm quite sure it wasn't used she is obsessed with wiping things with her nasty sponge that sits on the back of the sink for 2-3 months at a time. The toaster...
  5. The cornbread pudding has BACON! I see a perfect holiday tradition emerging for all of us.
  6. I candy bacon with brown sugar. Just coat thickly with brown sugar and bake on a cooling rack set on a baking sheet. I've actually never had it last long enough to put away.
  7. Don't forget the group that I'd call bandwagon companies. Offering things that may have always been gluten free, don't need to be labeled gluten free, but they're slapping that label on it as if we're all morons and need to know that WATER doesn't contain gluten. That or they just want to seem hip and on top of things. I'm not sure where they fit in, but...
  8. To the best of my knowledge, she just uses a flour blend like everyone else. I highly doubt they do any shipping, but I can ask when I stop in. It will probably be sometime next week. I do have experience. I grew up baking bread literally every Saturday of my life until I was 9 and every other after that until I was 16. Still, gluten free bread just doesn...
  9. I've always love love loved Eleanor's Bake Shop and can't get enough cupcakes. Their bread though is absolutely amazing, but I am not going to drive 30 minutes for a loaf of bread no matter how good it is. So, bored and on facebook far past when I should be in bed and to my surprise I notice that they have posted a nice tutorial because they have begun selling...
  10. I share the philosophy that traditions don't have to be lost. I also am totally for new traditions. I think there is probably room at everyone's table for both. I discovered cornbread pudding for Thanksgiving this year. This is something I will now have for every holiday and I don't see why everyone won't enjoy it. (Except my really picky husband apparently...
  11. I avoid the complicated reasons why I refuse to freeze raw milk, and simply say that it is something I don't do. I'd freeze regular milk, but then again that would avoid the whole problem for me I suppose.
  12. Originally when I started making these I used a recipe from some sweetened condensed milk brand or another that had a recipe for apple pie shakes. It was simply the milk, applesauce, spices and ice. (I think) I just used pumpkin instead of applesauce and pumpkin pie spice instead of apple pie spice. I always used about a half a can of pumpkin (the little...
  13. GAH! That is the opposite of the intended effect! On a dark gluteny day in August when you shared it with me you said it always cheers you up. Okay, I'll stop being a dorkus. Feel better!
  14. Awww you poor thing! This is not a good time to have to deal with this. I get the grumps too and probably would have responded the same way to the cookies. I agree that it is time to stand up to the cookies and protect yourself. It simply isn't worth the risk. Do try to get some extra rest tonight. (((HUGS))) And backatcha:
  15. POISON!!! Oh gosh, every time I walk down the cracker aisle and every time I see a toddler at church all I can see in my head is those old Mr. Yuck stickers. I just picture those on the forehead of every toddler in encounter. I start to hyperventilate if toddlers get within like 3 feet of me and all I can think is GLUTEN BOMB! I'm quite sure the rest of the...
  16. To go with my husband's insane work schedule last week and this week, a busted car! Okay, maybe not busted but acting funny so I had to drive him to work today because he hates driving my Jeep. (Fine by me, I hate feeling trapped at home.) So anyway, instead of breaking out the waffle iron for turkey and waffles I think I'm just going to be 100% lazy tonight...
  17. If it smells like dog vomit, and you wouldn't eat it... I can't imagine why anyone would want to cook with it. I have had both Udi's and Rudi's, a few varieties of both and have never had one I didn't enjoy. I will say that the one I like best is Udi's chia bread.
  18. I don't have one but I'm putting one on my list, although I probably won't get it until next year. The new magazine I picked up has spiffy new Zojirushi bread machine. It has a gluten free setting and a heater on top so it cooks evenly. And it makes cakes. And it makes jam. Yeah... I still can't cook rice though so maybe I need that rice cooker first.
  19. I babysit my cousin who is about 1 1/2. It is simple, he eats what I provide other than the fact that his mother brings a jug of milk for him. It is really simple. I do not want him running around while or after eating gluten touching MY STUFF! If his mother didn't like that she could find someone else who would babysit for the insanely cheap amount I do...
  20. My husband is working insane hours for the holidays so it is just me and the kiddo today. Gonna steam and candy some carrots to have with my leftover turkey. I think I have a little fresh cheese left I can fry up to have with it. I'll throw together some tapioca pudding for dessert and eat it while it's still warm.
  21. I may have said leftovers just to be annoying. I also am obsessed with milkshakes, year round. I just can't help myself. Sadly, I do not partake. But the rules don't forbid me from cooking with it! You drink my share, I'll stick with pictures of cake I can post on my facebook to make everyone jealous. My family I'm sure is missing me and my...
  22. I agree, totally fascinating. It is weird how so much we see today in medical research almost falls into what sounds like science fiction. So promising though!! I hope he keeps getting funding and that his research goes well.
  23. When I first went gluten free I started eating like a HIPPOPOTAMUS! I was so hungry all the time. Eventually this faded and I have a normal appetite now. You'll notice you go through a lot of changes, your body will begin healing and you may go through all sorts of stages between now and health. I sure did, heck I'm still on that path. Welcome to the fold...
  24. There is no reason to feel rude for having turned down going somewhere for dinner. You already planned and bought a dinner! You can of course mention that if she brings it up again and say that you just had not only already planned on cooking, but purchased everything and didn't want to walk out on it. If she is aware of your food issues you can also mention...
  25. Tonight, leftovers. That is the best reason to cook a turkey right? We never made it to the pumpkin pie shakes last night. My husband's cat went missing and we both went out in the rain for a bit looking for him but neither of us felt up to shakes. The jerk came home today acting all like nothing ever happened. Cats. So shakes tonight with our leftovers...
