The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Maybe the lady was confused and it wasn't a Living Without magazine she was carrying around in her purse at all. The picture though was clearly a cheesecake, that was red. I usually have tiramisu for my birthday but making a cheesecake seems far more simple. And I would have the added bonus of having made cream cheese so I could have bagels for breakfast... -

Those muu muus are a far easier solution. I also have a man I can throw at the shoveling problem. BRING ON THE MUU MUUS!!! -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

I'll go cry now... I have no idea. A lady let me flip through it but I was was so distracted and frustrated by other things I didn't write it down. I just remember thinking that it isn't a big deal to contact the magazine and ask for a copy. This almost calls for breaking out the headbanging pony. ETA: The one I have is not one of the ones I see listed... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
As far as I know, it was the most recent issue before the holiday one. It was near the back. I was flipping looking at someone's copy somewhere and swore I'd get my hands on that recipe. Now... to learn to make cream cheese. And good luck collecting. I traded my soul for a cookie in second grade, seriously. You'll have to track down whoever has it by now... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Good stuff! I baked up a batch of Bob's cornbread while I got the turkey ready and just crumbled up about half of it to use. My husband wouldn't touch it, I wasn't surprised and frankly that is fine by me. I'll probably freeze the rest of the cornbread for Christmas so I don't have to make more. I wanted to do that maple whatever turkey with the rub... -

Turkey day today! I'll make cornbread pudding (from the new Living Without holiday issue), mashed taters, gravy, and pumpkin pie shakes. I'm far too lazy to make a real pie on top of actual cooking. -
ARCHIVED 2012 Darwinian Nominations
Adalaide replied to Marilyn R's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That explains a lot, thanks. It was quite a long time ago that I had checked them out and maybe I was just put off by the whole, having both thing. Still... having the one with wheat crackers in the gluten free section of the store? Morons much? One of two things was going to happen. Either, they would sit and rot and no one would ever buy them and no one... -

Well, nearly 8 and I am up on a Saturday morning. The um... new season of My Little Pony started last week. That is some epic fail from that restaurant. And she asked why it isn't gluten free!!! This is a moment where my husband would interject with a similar statement, but for a different reason, I embarrass him. I found a Go Picnic meal at one... -
ARCHIVED Bruces Yams?
Adalaide replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bruce's has a variety of products on the market. As far as I know, none contain gluten but I don't eat all of their products. I've also never know anyone to open a can of yams, pop them in a dish and that is that. You'll have to carefully vet the maker (assuming it is someone who's culinary practices you trust) to find out what else they added and to see... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Only Restaurant Yay!
Adalaide replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Sort of... half an hour or so away is a gluten free bakery. Mostly they have cupcakes (by far the best I've had in my entire life, better than any gluteny crap), brownies, cookies, breads, and cakes. But, in addition to that they do pizza, soups, sandwiches and have a small dining area. I never go without getting an arepa. For a while I was going every month... -
It does get emotionally easier, I promise. A week or so in, my in-laws brought home some KFC and left it on the kitchen counter. I sobbed like a child, whined about how it isn't fair, gave myself a hell of a headache. I totally agree on the brownies! I also posted on my facebook about the Hostess thing. Something about how if I can't have chocodiles...

ARCHIVED A Request For Those Who Suffer From Gluten Ataxia
Adalaide replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My diagnosis was completely an accident. I had symptoms my whole life and got pretty much housebound sick within a year of getting married, which was close to 5 years ago now. Then a year ago in the fall I woke in the middle of the night with gallbladder issues and ended up in the ER. They told me I needed it out, my insurance said it was an elective surgery... -

Jet Puffed are awesome, I haven't even found any flavors that aren't safe. I have a dish of krispy treats on my counter (miracle they aren't gone yet) that were made with the peppermint ones. I have a sort of obsession with their flavored marshmallows. -
ARCHIVED A Request For Those Who Suffer From Gluten Ataxia
Adalaide replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My ataxia wasn't terribly bad before being diagnosed, but I can see now where I was headed. I was still at a place where mostly I was clumsy and off balance, but it was getting progressively worse. I could be standing perfectly still and suddenly falling over sideways for no reason. I would constantly bump into things. I dropped things and fumbled with my... -

Because, beyond the boundless realms of stupidity and ignorance we all deal with I still have a worst and can't get past it. I'll email my old neighbor for you, she had some way of kneading bread to beat the gluten out of it. -
ARCHIVED Making Meatballs, Corn Meal Or Crumbled Millet Bread?
Adalaide replied to megsybeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just pop bread butts in the blender or food processor and use them as is. I don't blend them too long so they don't turn into dust, just more or less crumbly. I don't bother toasting or anything either. Since I'm usually working with frozen bread I do microwave it until it is just warm and always wrapped in a paper towel, I find that wicks away just enough... -

It hurts this much just to read those! (BTW: Yes, I could possibly maybe be more than a little mildly obsessed with ponys. So?) -
ARCHIVED Cleaning Products With Gluten Inside Of Them?
Adalaide replied to ellyy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I never thought someone would think cleaning with it would be a good idea, well, not exactly. But for someone new who still may have some laying around the house that hasn't been thrown out yet, I thought it may be possible in a moment of "gluten head" to grab it not thinking. Or more accurately, thinking hey, I can't eat it I may as well clean something... -
ARCHIVED Cleaning Products With Gluten Inside Of Them?
Adalaide replied to ellyy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have read a few articles about the malt barley issue. The most level headed ones all come the the same conclusion, that until there is more research none of us should be putting our health at risk. Because I react to the most miniscule amounts of gluten I could pretty easily test this out, but I am also not willing to risk my health and sanity, spending... -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving And Family...

Bring your own meal. I also agree that bring a gluten free dish to share with everyone (with your own portion out already) is a great idea so people can see gluten free is delicious too is a great idea. Offended? That you are A: taking care of your health and B: came for the family and not the food? I'm not going home for Thanksgiving because it is 20... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Need Tips On How To Handle An Upcoming Event
Adalaide replied to tspiggy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is possible the planned meal is gluten free, which you could find out by contacting whoever is in charge of that aspect. Of course, the potential for CC is high and it is possible that because your husband is an officer that you don't want him rushing you home sick right after you eat and that skipping their food is a better option so you can have fun... -
ARCHIVED Nausea/indigestion With A Lot Of Other Foods
Adalaide replied to msfw's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is possible that pretty much anything could be upsetting you. Milk, corn, one of the flours in the blend, something in the margarine, who knows. It is also possible that it is actually a reaction to gluten. Over time our reactions to gluten can change and become more severe. So even if you haven't felt this way in the past, it could be in response the... -
ARCHIVED Nilla Wafers Sub?
Adalaide replied to Kelleybean's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
There are a lot of great recipes available to make your own. Sadly I have seen nothing that is actually a replacement for them. I personally don't think I'd enjoy shortbread cookies covered in pudding and left to get soggy. On the other hand, I obsessed with timarmisu which means I am also obsessed with lady fingers. I'd go with them. Covered in a pudding... -

Adalaide replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was thinking the same thing. There is nothing like scaring someone, like literally making you afraid for your like, to get you to spend money. And really, why be scared? Are you rampantly paranoid that you might die in a car accident every time you leave your house? Are you afraid every time you eat that might choke to death? What is the point of living... -

Just picked up a copy of Living Without, the holiday one. Because I like to torture myself. But, tis the season and I love love love turkeys! We picked up a reasonable sized turkey yesterday and are going to cook it as soon as we can and another on Thanksgiving. The recipes look amazing, can't wait to try some. Forget the holidays I will use these all the...
