  1. I really love oil cleansers. Then I looked at the label (looking for gluten!) and discovered most of what is in it is chemicals, not oil. So I went on line and read about making your own. Now I buy oils and use them to clean. No chemicals, no oils. Very easy to do too. I also started using pure shea butter as a moisturizer. I have used coconut oil for years...
  2. Just the other day I made these pumpkin cookies. I did a milllion substitutions and they still turned out fine. I used a general gluten-free flour and no canola oil. I suppose you could switch out the butter and use more oil. I didn't have nutmeg so I used more cinnamon and added vanilla. I also cut the recipe in half. Basically, I butchered it and I still...
  3. Thank you for all the ideas! The recipes all look good for any occassion!
  4. We are hoping to have a backyard open house type of party for friends. All the things my husband keeps throwing out as food ideas are full of gluten. As he said, "you don't have to eat them." No I don't. But I also don't want muffin crumbs, bun crumbs, cracker crumbs or any other gluten item in my gluten free kitchen/house! I could fire up the BBQ but then...
  5. No worries. I mainly eat fresh fish/meats and veggies. FBC and Tengu Natural Foods have enough gluten-free things to get me by if I am craving something. Tengu has a good tamari that is wheat free.
  6. Thanks for all the information but I am not in Tokyo! I'm in Toyama-ken.
  7. I just don't eat out! I have my one favorite sushi place that I have never been sick at and that is it. I have some homemade miso from a friend and the koji was from rice so I know that is safe. Miso I can take or leave so not a problem. I was never a fan of the dark red miso either... takes getting used to and I never did!
  8. I live in Japan and I am deathly afraid of miso here. None of the products say what kind of koji they use. I have recently ordered some Eden Foods miso from the US which is labeled as gluten free. I haven't tried it yet because it has been too hot to eat soup!
  9. Ok, with many good reviews I will go for it and get some mixes! Yes, I have an oven but it is the size of a microwave! I can bake, just nothing big! I am definitely going to have to try the coffee cake. I used to love coffee cake... Thanks!
  10. I live in Japan where there are NO gluten free products. However, an import store has a limited stock of gluten-free Betty Crocker items such as cookie mix, cake mix, and brownie mix. Before I spend the big bucks (or yen), does anyone have any experiences with the BC products? Are they good? Remember, I have nothing else to compare to! thanks.
  11. The absolute easiest thing to do is to eat whole food. By that I mean, nothing from a package. Go to the produce section and load up on vegetables and fruit. Then go to the meat section and get some eggs, meat, fish or whatever you like. Eat that and there is nothing to worry about. As an example, today for lunch I had garlic roasted chicken with rucola,...
  12. You should look up Marksdailyapple.com and look into a Paleo/primal diet. Lots of Crossfit athletes over there doing that. You can still eat carbs, just make them whole foods from non gluten sources. And yes, you will need that chef's hat!
  13. Just an update. I made the cobbler that I linked to above. It was a) very easy, and very good! Although, I think you could use less sugar and still have a great dessert. I found my flour was Arrowhead Mills gluten-free and I used it just as called for in the recipe. It worked fine. Anything cooked in that much butter and sugar must be good! I haven't had...
  14. I have never done any gluten-free baking. I have some Bob's gluten-free flour. Today I saw this recipe for Berry Cobbler and it looks easy and good! Can I just do a straight substitution gluten-free flour for the recipe flour? I often see Xanthan Gum added to gluten-free recipes but I don't have any (live overseas). What would happen if I didn't use it??...

    ARCHIVED Dreams

In the first year of gluten free life I had many dreams like that. I'd wake up in a complete panic! Now I am into year two and I don't have them as often!
  16. I have lived in Japan for 20+ years and the past year and a half of that has been gluten free. I would not say it is easy at all. There is no knowledge of "gluten free" so no packaging is labeled. Some snacks are labeled for allergies and list wheat. But then there is fine print that says "processed in a factory or on equipment that uses wheat." To me, that...
  17. I tested negative too. But after doing two gluten challenges where I ended up vomiting for 12 hours each time, my doctor just said, "avoid gluten." I went 100% gluten free a year ago Feb. By April I had tons of energy and felt a million times better. I had all sorts of odd symptoms that disappeared. I strongly believe that you have to eat good food. I never...

    ARCHIVED Japan

This topic was started years ago. Are you looking for mail order food within Japan? Be careful with Alishan. Their website lumps wheat free/gluten free together. Double check the items. For example, I have found barley soup in that category because it is "wheat free." Yoyomarket is sort of new and they buy from Costco and ship to you in Japan. Other than...
  19. At the last minute a friend gave me a bag of gluten free pancake mix to bring back to Japan. I had NO space in my luggage so I took it out of the box and put it in my carry on just in the plastic bag it came in plus a Ziploc. At security I was taken over to secondary inspection to have my bag of "white powder" analyzed. It took a few minutes to register why...
  20. In Dec. I flew Japan/LAX. I ordered gluten free meals ahead of time. However, I didn't eat the meals either flight. I was too afraid of cross contamination. I don't eat in restaurants either so there was no way I was going to trust the airline! At any rate, I brought rice crackers/sliced meat/cheese and made little sandwiches with those on the plane. I had...
  21. slightly unrelated, but I recently bought a microwave potato chip maker. It is a silicon tray with holes. You slice the potatoes with the mandoline that comes with it then microwave them on the tray for 4-5 min. Makes surprisingly good chips! You can flavor them as you please. I am always worried about getting sick from manufactured ones. These would be fun...
  22. Some of the Lindt does have barley malt but the straight 85% doesn't. I'm going to Costco this weekend (4hours away). I'll see what has been imported!
  23. I usually eat the 85% Lindt chocolate bars as my sweet treat for the day (a piece of the bar, not the whole thing!). Recently the stores where I live (Japan) are not carrying it! I have tried others but I don't like them or they state produced in factories with wheat. Today I decided to try to make my own using cocoa powder, coconut oil, sugar and vanilla...
  24. There is a gluten-free San Diego site with a write up about Lego Land. It is a couple of years old: Open Original Shared Link
  25. I have a MAC mineralize powder that is old so the ingredients are probably worn off. I have never had any problems with it. In fact, I put it on this morning!
