I do the same thing and usually just tell people I have a food allergy to start out with. Most people understand that food allergies are serious and a lot of times that is the end of the conversation. If they want to know more than sometimes I explain that celiac disease isn't actually an allergy, but rather an auto-immune disorder that acts like an allergy...

My immediate family is really supportive (eating with extended family is a bit more difficult), but even so I agree that I don't trust anyone as much as myself! My husband and my mom are both fantastic gluten spotters, but there are still times that they wouldn't think something had gluten and it does. My mom can't ever remember that rice crispies and corn...

Congratulations! Our little guys are about the same age! You'll have to show us some pictures!! Send me a pm any time, we can compare notes on being new moms! Isn't it wonderful!

YES! I don't now that I'm gluten-free, but I used to be really dizzy at night! If I got up to pee or anything at night I had to hold onto things to keep my balance! Like so many things it's one of those things that I hadn't really thought about getting so much better until I read this post! I don't know how many times something like that has been on this...

It took me a long time to get over the fatigue. I don't really remember exactly how long as it just gradually went away but I know it was many months after I went gluten-free. I even saw a specialist to try and work out the problem (they didn't have any advice)...but I've been gluten-free for two years and I think I'm over it....so hang in there!
-
Mine have gotten better rather than worse....but I definatly think there is a connection! I used to fly off the handle for no real reason at all ....as soon as I started gluten-free I had a lot easier time keeping it together! Amazing how celiac disease can affect so many aspects of your life!

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but I'm coming in late and may have missed it,,,,,,,I think dating with celiac disease would be an important topic for this age group. Ideas for gluten-free dates, how to explain celiac disease to your new person, how to meet others with celiac disease....etc. -

ARCHIVED Do You Feel Safe Coloring Your Hair
cgilsing replied to Moongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm with ChelsE! I have my hair colored and just don't ask questions.....if it does have wheat in it, then I'd just be paranoid and getting my hair colored! Vanity before comfort.....I wear uncomfortable shoes for that conviction....might as well risk CC once every 6 weeks too! -
It's just an idea, but I wonder if it wasn't the apple itself that bothered you, but maybe a wax or pestiside that they put on it?
-
Hey Vincent, Sorry you are feeling so bad today! I haven't heard anything about apples in particular, but I know some people have problems with other fruits like strawberrys or grapes....so it's possible. Hey I never heard, what happened with milk? Are you lactose intolerant? Silly question.....but you didn't put milk in your coffee right?

ARCHIVED How Do Your Loved Ones Deal With Your Celiac?
cgilsing replied to Laura's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I found that my relationship with people before my diagnosis was directly related to their response to it afterward. It really seems to have fallen into 3 catagories. People who I was really close to; people who knew me, but not on a deeply personal level; and people who I didn't know yet. The people that I was very close to before my diagnosis have... -
I LOVE Biaggi's! It was one of my favorite places even before gluten-free.... We eat at the one in Champaign, IL and the one in Bloomington, IL. The Chilean Sea Bass, the chopped chicken salad, and the filet are all really good! I have been assured that the creme brulet is gluten-free also...although it's not on the gluten-free menu....I've never had...

cgilsing replied to Texas Celiac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow TC! I'm surprised you ever get a minute to yourself with a crowd like that! Over time you will get used to being gluten free. You will learn how to substitute your comfort foods for things that you CAN have. Did you know they actually make gluten-free beer too! So, not all hope is lost! New Gris is I believe the most popular gluten-free beer... -

There was talk a little while ago about making me do a gluten challenge......I REALLY don't want to do that....but the first thing that popped into my mind was a big greasy Whopper! If I ate it for my first meal, I could enjoy it before everything fell apart! -
I don't know what it is about celiac disease that makes sooo many people lable us as hypochondriacs There are a lot of people on this board who have someone in their lives that acts like that! Yours truely included! What gets me is that no one would ever dream of rolling their eyes and telling a diabetic to get over their sugar problem! Or hand someone...

ARCHIVED I'm New And Have Celiac And Graves Disease
cgilsing replied to Texas Celiac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Texas Celiac and welcome! I'm sorry that you are having such a hard time right now! I do not have thyroid problems, but I know it is pretty common to have both celiac disease and thyroid problems....soooo I'm sure someone will chime in soon about that aspect of it. As far as the diet goes....it sounds like you (as like most of the people here) were... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do When You Get Glutened?
cgilsing replied to coco-loco's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've tried fiber before and it didn't do anything for me once I already had C. A Dr. told me that fiber can actually have the opposite affect if you are already C too......I would procede with caution. -

I wish I had better advice for this one.....I generally end up just suffering through it, but I know some people swear by anything with ginger.....if you get D immodium will help.......and there has been discussion about nuleve for cramping. Hope you feel better soon! -

Oh I know we are normal I just said that because I don't know what else to call them! That's why I put it in quotes. I'm really just fine with the gluten free diet too! I've been doing this for about 2 years now, and really it has improved my life in more ways than just the physical. I'm a much better cook, and a much healthier eater Adding the low... -

Sorry Tiffany! I guess cool whip is my treat! Really I don't know what I would do without you guys! People's reaction to gluten-free is always "Oh I couldn't do that!" I always think to myself....."Well, if you felt as bad as I did you would!" Maybe they can't do it.....maybe having more will-power than the average human is something that just comes... -

Ususally stuff like this doesn't really get to me. And maybe it has something to do with being 35 weeks pregnant that it's getting to me now, but I was just reading on another forum (pregnancy forum) a conversation a bunch of women with gestational diabetes (and nothin' else) were having. Three women in row were saying that they cried all the time, because...
