ARCHIVED Happy Happy Happy Is Closing?
jkmunchkin replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's been closed for a few months already. But Babycakes opened right as Happy Happy Happy closed and I think they are doing pretty well. It was voted Best cupcakes in NY Magazine, which is a popular magazine here and people really trust their best of issues. It seems to be getting a good reputation with the general population which bodes well for us... -

ARCHIVED Nice Eyelashes!
jkmunchkin replied to ThomasMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have never heard this, however my entire life everyone has always commented how beautiful and long my eyelashes are. Any makeup artist that has ever worked on me has always said I have the longest, thickest eyelashes they've ever seen. Interesting. -
OMG, so I hadn't even read this thread and just now decided to click on it. The irony is, I just made the coconut cake yesterday!!!! It's AMAZING!!! For anyone that has not bought this book I highly reccomend it. First off, Annalise definately writes these recipes for beginners. She gives you tips of how to reheat stuff, store it, etc. No guess work. And...

ARCHIVED How To Deal In A Non-gluten-free Household?
jkmunchkin replied to tracii's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I guess I'm fortunate in that DH never fought me on any of this and is an extremely picky eater so he doesn't even like half the "normal" stuff I eat so I don't have to worry about cross contamination to much. For instance I will buy cream cheese for my gluten-free bagels but he doesn't even like cream cheese so I don't have to worry about a contaminated... -
Which Seasoning Brand Do You Use?
jkmunchkin replied to mart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not to brand specific when it comes to seasonings but I won't use mixed seasonings and always read ingredients. I'll use straight garlic powder, salt, pepper, ect. But never anything that is a seasoning mix. The only brand I would probably trust if I was going to do that is McCormick. -
Yeah Seattle's Best found they couldn't compete with Starbucks and they let Starbuck's buy them. I thought of the same thing with the Barnes & Nobles and Borders thing

ARCHIVED Ice Cream Truck
jkmunchkin replied to stephanielaw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Don't the ice cream bars come wrapped? (sorry I grew up in a really small town and didn't have an ice cream truck so this is not supposed to be sarcastic question. I just assumed everything is in a wrapper). -
They are owned by Starbucks so you should be ok.

For anyone in NY, I have verified that the Mr. Softee ice cream (obv. without the cone) is gluten-free!!! I love Mr. Softee! -
ARCHIVED Favorite Make-up And Skin Care
jkmunchkin replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What products on here contain gluten? To be honest the only ones I would worry about are foundation, face mosisturizer, lipsticks, shampoo & conditioner. I mean those are the only things I could potentially ingest. I don't make a habit of eating my blush or mascara. LOL!! -
ARCHIVED Favorite Make-up And Skin Care
jkmunchkin replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh yeah DH is great about my shopping. He actually kinda thinks it's funny sometimes. My job doesn't exactly help my shopping addiction (or for that matter what a normal perception of prices are). -
ARCHIVED Favorite Make-up And Skin Care

ARCHIVED Favorite Make-up And Skin Care
jkmunchkin replied to lindalee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'll be honest, I'm not very careful about makeup or skincare but so far have had no problems. I use a face lotion that I love but it's not a name brand you can buy. It's manufacture by one of the companies that makes the makeup for the larger brands but I think only smaller private labels use it. Right now I am using a Giorgio Armani foundation, Clinique... -
ARCHIVED Stix Japanese Sushi Restaurant
jkmunchkin replied to suziew's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Is it a hibachi type restaurant? I know there is one we have occassionally gone to here and I just bring my own soy sauce and they make my food for me in back in a clean pan. I wouldn't count on to many Japanese restaurants to have a gluten-free menu. -
I've always gotten hiccups a lot more than normal people. And when I get them I get them for a really long time and even once they go away they'll keep coming back throughout the day. I actually thought that it was hereditary because my dad has told me that his grandfather used to have the same problem and one time they even had to bring him to the hospital...

ARCHIVED I Did It... I Made Bread!
jkmunchkin replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
YAY!!! I'm so glad you were successful and loved the bread as much as I do. Did you use the oven trick to make it rise? I think it sounds like a great idea but definately has a lot of potential for me to screw it up. -
ARCHIVED Pacific Foods
jkmunchkin replied to kaciemarie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well now I'm hesitant to eat it, but if you try it let us know how it is. I bought it also and love french onion soup. I used to love the Campbell one in the can. -
I ate there once pre-dx and didn't find anything special about it. I think it was for a business thing otherwise I probably wouldn't have gone there in the 1st place. I've never thought to go there again.

ARCHIVED Breakfast I Need Something That Sticks With Me
jkmunchkin replied to skinnyminny's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I posted a couple weeks ago about a breakfast or snack that I love to make myself and it's really filling. Cut up your favorite fruits. I like strawberries, blueberries, banana and sometimes peaches. I use a few strawberries, a handful of blueberries and a whole banana (which makes it really filling). Add sour cream and sugar, mix it all together and there... -
So I went to a wedding this past weekend of one of my good friends. And what an amazing friend she is!! She asked me to come hang out with her while she was getting ready (having her makeup done, etc.) to keep her calm. While we were hanging out she told me that when they came to take the dinner orders just let the waiter know I was the one with celiac. She...

ARCHIVED Pasta Salad Recipe
jkmunchkin replied to JenAnderson's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't have a recipe but I just bought Tinkyada tri-color pasta the other day. Y'know the twisty ones like when you go into a deli and get pasta salad. I was gonna make it with some olive oil, garlic, olives, baby corn, tomato put it in the fridge to get cold and then add some pieces of buffalo mozzarella. -
ARCHIVED Hey New Yorks--i Have A Question
jkmunchkin replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
LOL.. I was drinking with Mikhail Baryshnikov had Russian Samovar one night a couple years ago. He is one of the owners and happened to be there that night. I was there with a whole bunch of people from work doing a vodka tasting for a Russian themed party we were having and he joined out table. That is definately the strongest vodka ever!!! -
I don't have a problem with dairy so I can't promise these suggestions are good, but another Italian place that I love is Lumi. I've reccomend this countless times on this board. I actually have yet to try Peter's or Blooms but hopefully they're great. I eat in a lot of restaurants that don't necessarily have gluten-free menus. I think in NY the wait...
