ARCHIVED Biocard Home Test - Faint Positive? You Be The Judge
nvsmom replied to jvdb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I couldn't see any line until I was at about the 10 minute line. I remember checking it just before 5 minutes and there was nothing so I almost dismissed it. I went back to a book for 10 more minutes and almost fell out of my chair when I saw the positive line - which I held closer to the light to be sure it was actually a line. I would take that test... -
ARCHIVED Absolute Frustration Getting Tested In Canada
nvsmom replied to jvdb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
(hugs) What a mess. I'm in Alberta, and it's a hassle to get tested here, and they only do one "preliminary" test, but I didn't experience a mess like that! Can you get another lab requisition? -
I too have had positive ANA's but in the last few years it has been negative again. A positive ANA often means there is an autoimmune problem but it's not always Lupus... or even usually. I thought I had lupus too because I had arthritis for years but after being gluten-free for a good while, I am essentially arthritis free - it was the celiac causing my...

ARCHIVED Call From Dr
nvsmom replied to Misty073's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Some of that could be due to thyroid issues too. Are you going to try the gluten-free diet to see if it helps? Non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI) has the same symptoms as celiac disease, is much more common, but there is no way to accurately test for it yet. -
ARCHIVED New Guy With Blood Work Questions....
nvsmom replied to spikeran's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that a positive tTG IgA over twice the normal range is pretty specific for celiac. This report discusses the tests more on pages 10-12. Open Original Shared Link Welcome to the boards; it looks like you belong here. -
ARCHIVED Beginner With Questions
nvsmom replied to Syracusegirl1999's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So, here are my questions: 1) Might the hypoglycemia/geographic tongue/sinus infections all be good indicators of either gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity? I think so. I used to get one to two sinus infections per year and haven't had one since going gluten-free. Hypoglycemia was an issue for me before as well, and it is greatly improved now... -
ARCHIVED Biocard Home Test - Faint Positive? You Be The Judge
nvsmom replied to jvdb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That line is pretty close to what I had when I did the Biocard test. I didn't quite get the right amount of blood so that could have affected my result and made it faint. When I went to the doctor and ran the test there (it's the tTG IgA) my result was over 10 times the normal range.... for me the test worked. I remember googling the faint positive for... -
ARCHIVED Valid Test Results
nvsmom replied to try2bgfree's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow! I think it is unlikely that you will have an accurate celiac test after only 5 days if you are gluten free. If you are still consuming tiny amounts of gluten (like in soy sauce or gravies) then your chances of an accurate test are higher. The DGP IgA and DGP IgG tend to detect celiac sooner in a gluten challenge than the tTG tests, and much faster... -
ARCHIVED Not Sure If I Should Go In For Testing?
nvsmom replied to koliver's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with eer03 that you know your own body so if you think gluten is a problem, it very well could be BUT I disagree about going gluten-free now. If it does turn out that you do better on the gluten-free diet and think you should be tesed for celiac, then you will ave to resume eating gluten for a couple of months to have accurate tests. I think it would... -
ARCHIVED Extensive Symptoms, Considering Testing -- Thoughts?
nvsmom replied to mipake's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think it could be celiac too. I used to have many of your types of symptoms including really getting sick - when I had mono I also had pneumonia at the same time. Lol. Beer used to do a real number on me too; I don't know if it was the barley or the liquid delivery... Anyway, when you do your testing, try to get a full panel: tTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP...- 2 replies

ARCHIVED Bowels During Early Dx
nvsmom replied to africanqueen99's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hopefully her BM's will continue to normalize as you potty train. That "urgency" could even make the fact that a BM is coming more obvious to her. If she is ready for the potty, I say go for it. Waiting for her BM's to be normal could take some time. I'm guessing it will be a bit faster for her because of age but it can take months to get normal... I'm close... -
ARCHIVED Why Do I Have Symptoms From Activity?
nvsmom replied to CaliSparrow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tend to have autoimmune flare-ups when I get worn out or stressed. Many of the symptoms are celiac symptoms, some I attribute to my thyroid, and others just feel fluish and yucky. I've been gluten-free for almost a year and a half yet I still get issues even when not glutened... I agree, Rome wasn't built in a day... Or rebuilt in our case. Hang in... -
It is extremely rae to have a false positive. Extremely... My guess would be that you do have celiac disease but you also have very bad hay fever too... Lucky you. Celiac testing tests for antibodies that will wipe out your intestines or mucosal tissue as an over reaction to a gliadin (gluten) intolerance. The tests are tisuue transglutaminase, deaminated...

ARCHIVED How Common Are False Negatives?
nvsmom replied to Misty073's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
False negatives aren't common, but they do happen. This report on page 12 shows the sensitivity of the various tests - how many tests have a positive result if 100 celiacs are tested. Open Original Shared Link As another said, about 5% of celiacs are too low in IgA for IgA tests to be accurate. That will affect the tests using IgA. -
ARCHIVED Very Bloated And Getting Married Next Friday, Need Some Help!
nvsmom replied to vallene45's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, not Spanx. Mine has hooks and bars in it... Makes grandma's underwear look new and modern. LOL -
It can take a long time for symptoms and illness to improve in celiacs. Children appear to heal a bit faster, but I know that I was still having symptoms at 6 months gluten-free, although most were reduced. I still get back pain, fatigue and what feels like a sore throat but is actually sores on the top, and back of my mouth. It could be related to other...

ARCHIVED Getting Frustrated -- Anyone Else Have These Symptoms?
nvsmom replied to bepack's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had those symptoms. I still get some of them.... I tend to get autoimmune flare-ups and I'm not sure what causes them. I have a few problems so perhaps it's one of those, or it could be something else. Anyway, when a flare-up happens, I generally feel like I'm fighting a flu but not getting the flu; I'll be tired and achey, glands might even swell... -

nvsmom replied to vallene45's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh no... they make "super underwear"!... It sucks you in in really impressive ways. Just make sure it's a high girdle or you'll have one heck of an impressive muffin top! LOL I hope your day is fantastic! -
ARCHIVED Newbie Questions
nvsmom replied to indigox3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Often if a person has been gluten-free for a long time, a longer gluten challenge is needed. . Times range from 4 weeks to 12 weeks with about 8 weeks being the norm (if you've been off gluten). For an endoscopy, I have seen gluten challenges ranging from 2 to 6 weeks; less time is needed for those. -
ARCHIVED My Son And Getting Tested....
nvsmom replied to lara1704's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Even if it is negative for celiac, he could have non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI) which has the same symptoms as celiac disease minus the villi damage. After he is tested, you might want to consider trying the gluten-free diet as well as going dairy free (often linked). Good luck. -
(Hugs) Welcome to the forum. Your doctor was incredibly insensitive. It sounds like he was trying scare tactics on you so you would be more likely to go gluten-free. It is true that continuing to eat gluten can cause inflammation that can trigger other autoimmune disorders but it is not a guarantee by a long shot. Same thing with infertility; it can...

ARCHIVED Deaminated Iga
nvsmom replied to Missbean's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with PoPT, that was a weird way to say the test. It's like they blended the names of the two tests... odd. And that report she lists is really very good. -
ARCHIVED Where To Get Tested And Other Q's.

ARCHIVED Opinions Please!
nvsmom replied to Curious9's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would get copies of your old thyroid labs if possible. I was told for years and years that my thyroid was normal, and I trusted them, but once I saw the labs and did some research into ideal ranges and such, I realized that they were.... well, completely wrong. Thyroid tests to get are TSH (near a 1) free T4 and free T3 (in upper 50-75% range of your... -
ARCHIVED Gained Massive Weight In A Short Period Of Time!
nvsmom replied to Mesadora's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
(hugs) Yep, me too. I was diagnosed as a celiac and hypothyroid at about the same time. Doctors give you the impression that if you take your magic synthroid pill, and stop gluten, that you will feel better within a couple of weeks.... They have no clue! It has taken me 16 months to get my diagnostic blood tests (tTG IgA) to an ALMOST normal level, and...- 3 replies
