  1. What is the gbd test? Technically, doctors don't give an "official" diagnosis unless there are positive blood tests, a positive biopsy, and a positive response to the gluten-free diet. Luckily not all doctors are such sticklers so if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck... My doctor diagnosed me with just blood tests and never bothered checking...
  2. Good luck with the scopes. Hopefully the results will be very clear one way or the other. If you can, try to push for many samples to be taken - I believe six or more is considered adequate. Try to eat some gluten over the weekend if you are able... Hope it goes well.
  3. Thanks! I think I found the list they give... Wow, there is so much that I have a hard time believing it's true! LOL
  4. I make chicken nuggets in my Acti-Fry for my kids. The coating is in a baggie and I keep it in the freezer using it a couple of times. The coating: 1c tapioca flour 1c brown rice or al purpose gluten-free flour 1/2c flax and chia meal 3/4 tsp paprika 1 tsp pepper 3 tsp seasoning salt 3/4 tsp garlic 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp mustard I cut...
  5. I find some bites react differently than others, but I always put it down to different types of mosquitoes. The bites I get at this time of the year are much smaller than the ones I had in the spring. ... And then spider bites are a whole other story - makes three inch welts... nasty critters.
  6. Good luck with the gensure test. What are you thinking for more testing at this time? I'm not sure if the DGP tests are even available in Alberta. At my last doctor appointment, I discovered that my doctor had never even heard of the DGP tests. I know labs can be sent away, because I know one man who had his blood work sent to the Mayo clinic - but...
  7. My family is off to "The Happiest Place on Earth" in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good gluten-free restaurant or fast food store in Disneyland? I plan on mostly packing in our food (me and our three boys are gluten-free) but I would like to splurge on a meal in the park once. My problem is that my boys are fairly picky kid...
  8. Bloating and gas was one of the first symptoms to improve for me. I was noticeably smaller after a month. In the mean time, I know this sounds odd, but if the gas is bad... well, gas rises so if you elevate you (ahem) back end over your head, it sometimes helps thing get moving... Headstands or hanging off furniture helps. A short jog in a spot where...
  9. If you can't make it the required time, test once you do go gluten-free again. You never know, it might be enough to register on the blood tests. When you do get tested, try to have the DGP and tTG tests run as they show positive the soonest (DGP especially). Essentially, the blood tests just tell you whether it is celiac disease or non-celiac gluten...
  10. I would say, "probably". If you have symptoms, a positive test, and then symptoms resolve on the gluten-free diet, then I would said, yes you do. A positive tTG IgA can also result from thyroiditis, diabetes, colitis and crohns, and chronic liver disease in about 5% of positive tests. If you have one of those health issues, it could cause your positive...
  11. Poor kid, and poor mom. If it's a negative test, I think you have two options: tell everyone she has NCGI (non-celiac gluten intolerance) and stress how it is every bit as damaging and systemically systematic as celiac disease is, just minus the villi atrophy, or.. Lie. If they won't take NCGI seriously, tell them it "looks like celiac disease" (which...
  12. The common culprits are: D, B's (often 2,6 12), Magnesium, potassium, iron, ferritin, A, zinc... I can't remember anymore but I think I missed something.
  13. It's possible that because he has been gluten-free for long, that his body is now healed and able to handle a "glutening" with more ease than if he was still ill. It might just be that you've done a good job keeping him gluten-free so he didn't get very sick. Not everybody reacts with strong symptoms every time they are glutened either. I didn't get a...
  14. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
  15. Yeah... I'm in Alberta too and couldn't get any more testing either. You might be able to find a mail order lab and have a local lab draw the blood and send it off East or to the States, but I bet it costs a pretty penny. I strongly suspect celiac disease in two of my three boys. They too had negative tTG IgA tests so with no other testing options, I...
  16. I agree with the article that gluten-free eating isn't really a healthy way of eating. gluten-free substitute foods ARE higher in sugars and fats.... I think that's why gluten-free brownies are so good! I'm all for increased gluten awareness because i don't have to explain what gluten often now. Eating gluten-light is probably good for most people, similar...
  17. Perhaps you could try testing for food sensitivities? Some of the "alternative" doctors will test for that and it could turn up some helpful results (since the doctors aren't helping). How are your thyroid levels? Arthraglias can be a symptom of hashi's, could you be under treated? Most people with hashi's tend to feel their best when TSH is near a 1...
  18. Yes, push for blood tests. Try to get bothe tTG and DGP testing done, the latter works well in kids. If all tests are negative, and there's no endoscopy, I would make her gluten-free anyways. For every celiac out there, there are about 6 people who have non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI) who have all the same symptoms as celiac disease but negative...
  19. Wow, I never thought about that for myself. My tTG is still mildly elevated after a year gluten-free but it started dropping faster after I switched from synthroid to Thyroid (like Armour).... Interesting! My oldest is gluten intolerant (his tTG IgA was negative) and he has what I would consider to be a high TSH (above a 4) but the doctors won't do anything...
  20. My son is 10, going on 11. We've used it going places he is nervous about or when he has things to do that he is less than confident on. It seems to help him keep his stress levels down to a low, or at least normal level. I actually use it in anticipation of a stressful event (dentist or new doctor) and it seems to help. I hope things continue to improve...
  21. There is a book called Artisanal Gluten-Free Cupcakes that has really good recipes, but it requires a few flours. The gingerbread and orange cranberry cupcakes are very nice.
  22. Up here, American Smarties are called Rockets and they are gluten-free up here too. My oldest loves them - he is my sugar junkie.
  23. I'm glad your house is gluten-free. That will make it simpler as time goes on. If she is starting to feel better and growing, you are definitely on the right track. the diet probably just needs tweaking. We're in Canada so I don't know if you'll have the same homeopathic options up there. I have Sedatil by Boiron which is to help nervousness (hypersensitivity...
  24. Glad he is feeling good. It takes a while for those numbers to come down, doesn't it? Good luck with all the testing.
