ARCHIVED Worse Symptoms With Different Products
nvsmom replied to rhubarbandjake's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had varying reactions based on the time of day I ate and what I ate. Waffles on an empty stomach in the morning usually caused a lot of pain whereas bread later in the day caused more bloat than pain. Beer caused immediate bloating (beer belly ) where as other foods did not. I would say yes, different products cause different reactions. -
ARCHIVED Bloodtests Negative - Now What?
nvsmom replied to dbygones's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome back. NCGS' symptoms are pretty much identical to a celiac's symptoms except there is no villi damage. Those with NCGS will have an individual set of symptoms just like a celiac will. Some with NCGI around here have symptoms much worse than mine were and others' symptoms were much milder, but they were all considered to be symptoms of celiac... -
ARCHIVED New Here, Symptoms And Advice
nvsmom replied to Jenny516's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are a fair number of members that deal with reflux around this forum, I haven't had to deal with it and don't know as much about it. If you search GERD or reflux (in the search tool near the top of the page under the Celiac.com banner) I bet you'll find more info. Or start a new thread with that as a topic. People around here are friendly and I'm sure... -
ARCHIVED Happy Spring, Fellow Gardeners!
nvsmom replied to notme's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ahhhh! I'm down in Calgary. We're south but the Rockies make our summer very short - only June July and August are frost free. My hubby used to work up north quite frequently in the winters. i was always amazed how people had to leave everything running (cars, generators, machinery) or they would freeze solid. Brrr. -
ARCHIVED 2 Yr Old On Gluten Challenge
nvsmom replied to valerieanne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My kids are old enough not to eat art supplies and know to wash their hands when done. My kids have portable lunch mats/place mats that they fold out onto eating areas when they eat out. We haven't had any issues with bathroom trips and absences aren't an issue for us - we're homeschoolers too so we aren't in a classroom everyday, it's more about a day here... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Know It Was Gluten?
nvsmom replied to Ksee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A good cleaning of cupboards and cooking areas will probably be enough. Vacuum the shelves, corners and walls and then wipe it down well. That should be enough for food storage areas. You are already keeping your food safely, and I'm sure you wash loose foods (like fruit, veggies, and meat cuts) as well as your food prep areas. You will bring contaminated...- 12 replies

ARCHIVED Questions About My 5 Year Old
nvsmom replied to kpw31's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If the upper limit of the test was 5, and she had a 25.... that's 5 times the upper limit so it is quite positive. Some celiacs do have ridiculously high test results but not all; a 25 is pretty high - especially in a child. This report has more info on the tests and how the endoscopic biopsy results will be classified. It could be helpful: Open Original... -

Zone 1a?? Oh my! You must be north of the Arctic circle or halway up a mountain.... And here I was feeling sorry for myself in my zone 2b/3a garden.... we're too close to the Rockies for good gardening. Kudos to you for gardening up there! BTW, what time is sunset for you now? Down here sunrise is about 5:30 and sunset is just before 10:00pm.... love... -
ARCHIVED 2 Yr Old On Gluten Challenge
nvsmom replied to valerieanne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's not true where I live, but I know it is true in many places. Accomodations is mostly a non-issue for us anyways because my kids always pack more than enough food when they are out of the house, and they know not to eat food from others unless I check it first. My kids all tested negative for celiac disease, but my doctors would only check the tTG... -
ARCHIVED Second Guessing My Gluten Problem...
nvsmom replied to taynichaf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For me, it took a few weeks for some GI symptoms and migraines to improve. For other symptoms like fatigue, and pain.... well, I'm one year in and still waiting. LOL You'll probably need to give it until Xmas, or even longer, before all your symptoms clear up. I went entirely dairy free in my second month gluten-free (I believe). Once I was gluten... -
ARCHIVED Celiac?
nvsmom replied to Kadee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might want to get copies of your labs to ensure that your doctor ran the right lab tests. On p. 11-12 of the below report are all of the celiac tests and how good of a test they are. The DGP, tTG, and EMA tests are the best, and they are best done in combination. Open Original Shared Link If you had a positive biopsy, then you (most likely) have... -
ARCHIVED Questions About My 5 Year Old
nvsmom replied to kpw31's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the boards. To answer you questions: yes and yes. We have board members who had positive endoscopic biopsies without ANY positive blood tests sn conversely, we have board members who had negative biopsies with multiple positive blood tests... Both groups have celiac though. If she has elevated tTG IgA levels, that means that damage has been... -
ARCHIVED Negative Test 5 Years Ago
nvsmom replied to SBlack's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know if a GI specialist would help you with NCGI or not because NCGI does not damage the gut like celiac does. I do not think there is much doctors can do for NCGI except check your nutrient levels for you and make sure your other organs are working well in spite of the inflammation (like pancreas) ... if you are having symptoms, not many doctors... -
ARCHIVED 2 Yr Old On Gluten Challenge
nvsmom replied to valerieanne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think her 8 yo dd has dh but the 2 yo ds is on the gluten challenge and has no diagnosis. I agree that the doctor is misguided though: I can't see any benefit to an early diagnosis if that involves making your son eat gluten and causing him to feel ill for up to 3 months just so the doctor can confirm that he has an illness?! He is already gluten-free... -
When he does go gluten-free, give the diet time before you discount it when it comes to arthritis. My pain took a good 6 months to go away. If you did mean that he has a positive Endomysial (EMA IgA), and not an elevated endometrial, then I would feel comfortable going gluten-free too... In fact I did go gluten-free based on that. If you don't NEED the...

ARCHIVED 3 Year Old With Unusual Symptoms
nvsmom replied to rhubarbandjake's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Constipation is a pretty common symptom. It was one of my main symptoms too. My mom has told me that as an infant, I used to have to strain and cry. Changes in mood are a main symptom in childhood celiacs too. I think getting her testing is worth a try, especially after she had a positive reaction to a (mostly) gluten-free diet. I think that shows that she... -

ARCHIVED Could It Be Celiacs?
nvsmom replied to Amaytrain's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh yes! Your symptoms definitely fit. They are actually quite classic symptoms. I think it wouldbe worth your while to get tested. Plus there is a genetic link to celiac so you will want to have your kids tested, and repeat the testing every few years if they continue to eat gluten. The celiac panel is: DGP IgA and DGP IgG TTG IgA and tTG IgG Total... -
ARCHIVED New Here, Symptoms And Advice
nvsmom replied to Jenny516's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ditto everything Lisa said. If you are getting further testing, make sure that you continue to eat gluten or the test will nt be valid. Once you go gluten-free, a food and symptom journal can be very helpful in seeing patterns and symptom changes. And welcome to the board. -
ARCHIVED Negative Test 5 Years Ago
nvsmom replied to SBlack's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are quite a few health problems that have a link to low vit D: hypothyroidism and the rheumatic diseases are often linked to low D. NCGI can cause a lot of inflammation and it is thought that that is what can lead to deficiencies. NCGI is newly recognized though so not a lot is known for certain. If you want to get tested for celiac, you will have... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Going It Alone - Would Love Some Advice
nvsmom replied to Hd7747474's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac disease can crop up ANY time in your life. It is recommended that family members of celiacs get tested every few years because it can hit at any time. You might have been negative in 2009 but that was four years ago and things can change....your doctor should know that. You might want to request copies of your past labs so you can help yourself... -
ARCHIVED New Here, Not New To gluten-free, But Ready To Eat gluten-free...please Don't Judge!
nvsmom replied to RaeDawnMarie721's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think keeping a journal of your symptoms and food is very helpful too. It helped me see some patterns and it helped me see how my health improved once I went gluten-free because some of those symptoms went away so slowly that I didn't notice it until I looked back a few weeks or months. Good luck. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Going It Alone - Would Love Some Advice
nvsmom replied to Hd7747474's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Did you get your appointment? Request the full celiac panel when you go. The tests are listed on page 12 of this link: Open Original Shared Link Don't forget to list anxiety as one of your symptoms when you go to the doctor; it's not an unusual one but it tends to not be as quick to resolve as the GI issues once you do go gluten-free (after testing)... -
ARCHIVED Surprised By Blood Tests
nvsmom replied to Withjoy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
With a positive tTG IgA and a positive EMA IgA (same positive tests that I had) there is very little doubt that you have celiac disease. The EMA IgA is 98-100% specfic to celiac disease (meaning that out of 100 positive tests, 98-100 are due to celiac) and only occurs after a significant amount of damage has been done to your intestinal villi (ie. it is negative... -
ARCHIVED Not Sure What To Think - Just Got Blood Test Results
nvsmom replied to lao512's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. You are right that the AGA tests (anti-gliadin antibodies) are not the best tests and are being phased out. DGP is a MUCH better test. The reticulin test is pretty old too. Very few labs use that anymore. I'm not that sure about it's reliability. On page 11-13 of this report, the various current blood tests for celiac disease are...
