ARCHIVED Do I Have A Closing Window Of Opportunity To Lose Weight?
nvsmom posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm a mom to three boys, who is 38, around 5'8", and weighs about 175lbs on a bloated day. I am about 30-35 pounds heavier than I'd like to be. I was diagnosed celiac almost a month ago, although I suspect I've had it my whole life. Withdrawl symptoms are slowly lessening and I now feel well enough to start thinking about losing my extra weight again. ... -
Before I was diagnosed, I successfully, and fairly quickly(4-5 months), lost 30 lbs following Tosca Reno's Eat-Clean Diet. She is a 50 year old figure competitor who lays out how she lost weight in her late 30's and became a fitness model. The diet focuses on eating whole foods, avoiding processed foods, eating a fair amount of protein, at a frequency...

ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free
nvsmom replied to taterhart's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That is EXACTLY how I found out that I have celiac! My oldest son has mild Aspergers (autism) and these kids often have leaky guts. I did a bit more reading and found out that his stomachaches, constipation and short stature (he is 9 and his 7 year old brother is now taller ) could be symptoms of celiac. I had his blood tested (ttg Iga, EMA) and these... -
This is a really good point! Other problems can cause villi flattening but your doctor wants you to go gluten-free to see if you feel better because he thinks it could be celiac. gluten-free diets only help celiacs so it sounds like you are in the process of confirming the diagnosis through diet... successfully. I guess that's the good and bad news all...

ARCHIVED My Biopsy Word For Word
nvsmom replied to troykm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten-free for just a few weeks and had terrible withdrawl with a headache that lasted well over a week (now it's just sporadic), a bunch of fatigue, and I was so so grumpy that even I couldn't stand myself. The withdrawl is starting to get better for me now, so hang in there! -
ARCHIVED Relapse Or Normal?
nvsmom replied to troykm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm about 3 weeks in too and I had a lot of fatigue that just started to lift a few days ago. I was joking with my hubby that re-opening my eyes after blinking felt like a huge effort. And the irritability? My children are lucky they made it through my withdrawl alive. LOL -
ARCHIVED I Triede Strella Damm Daura Beer
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My liquor store said the have had Greens but are out... I'll have to check back or special order it. I've heard great things about it too. And yes, I'm trying to leave my guinea pig days behind! LOL -
ARCHIVED I Triede Strella Damm Daura Beer
nvsmom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I posted a week or so ago asking for advice on beers. My local liquor store didn't have the ones many of you suggested but they did have Daura beer, with lists of awards all over its gluten-free labels, so I bought it. I cracked it open after dinner and braced myself for an odd flavour, but it tasted like beer! Not amazing beer but beer. I was really... -
I was diagnosed celiac just 3 weeks ago, and have only been gluten-free (for sure) for about 10 days, so I'm not completely sure of my answers since I've been glutened for so long. *How soon after you ingest gluten do you begin to feel "glutened"? If it's on an empty stomach (pancakes for breakfast), I feel a stomach ache within 10 minutes. ...

ARCHIVED Would Love Your Input On This
nvsmom replied to Staceyshoe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can see where it would be tough to tie it all together. I tend to get stomach aches immediately to hours later or not at all so it took me decades to piece it together. Perhaps a demonstration would help? He's 7 right? Make a playdough model of the villi in your intestines. Show how it absorbs food, and then dramatically cut it off. Or a demo on... -
ARCHIVED Just Made An Appointment
nvsmom replied to Peppa-minto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think MitziG is right. I know if I was off breads and gluten lite, my bloating generally went down within 2 days. As long as graduation isn't immediately before the test, you will probably be fine. Congratulations on you graduation! -
Oh dear. I hope you're feeling better soon! LOL

ARCHIVED Headaches In Celiac Patients
nvsmom replied to jebus's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I tend to get a bad headache (or migraine) a few times a month. At this point, going gluten-free is really BAD for my headaches since I've had one for 2 weeks (with a day or so off in the middle). I have been gluten-free for 3 weeks. I am REALLY looking forward getting through this gluten withdrawl. Ugh. -
ARCHIVED When Was Your Celiac Triggered?
nvsmom replied to Victoria6102's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i had no idea that infections are linked to celiac. If that's true, I also was sick a bunch with a few UTIs a year and chronic strep throat; they once had me on antibiotics for a full year trying to get rid of it... didn't work. I had mono and pneumonia at the same time as a teen, and now a days I get sick a few times a year (but I attributed that to having... -
I'm 3 weeks into my gluten-free diet and I can really relate. I've been having a few cookies every evening just because I can. I don't like most of the store bought gluten-free baked goods so I haven't indulged in the other areas much... I do find I want stuff just because I'm not supposed to have it... kind of like my elementary aged boys. I need to...

Ditto Tom! I found it easier to embrace the gluten-free diet once I knew one way or the other too. I hope your switch to gluten-free goes smoothly.

Wow! Congrats to your hubby... and to you for being able to sleep again!!

ARCHIVED Swollen Hands After Waking Up
nvsmom replied to I hate gluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had that in the summer ever since I was pg with my youngest, 5 years ago. I thought it was heat related. hmm -
Thanks, IrishHeart. I've heard they think there is a link, I just haven't found that they've proved it definitively... But I believe it probably is linked. It's just so annoying to know that this other problem (ITP), that almost killed me, could have been prevented if my childhood doctors had been a bit sharper about my symptoms! I'm sure a LOT of people...

I went 38 years not knowing. I think my mother has gone 68 years but she hasn't tested yet... We both have symptoms but no extreme or critical ones. Perhaps Americans spend more on health care because their population is slightly less healthy(not judging); obesity rates are at ~36% and that will cause a lot of problems.... Then again, our wait times...

ARCHIVED When Was Your Celiac Triggered?
nvsmom replied to Victoria6102's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think I've had it my entire life. My mother told me that as a baby I was C and often needed help to get things moving; this is back in the day when cereal was introduced at 2 weeks old. As I young child, I remember crying because C hurt so much and having wicked stomach aches. I got my mom to take me to a doctor and he told us that "she is one of those... -

ARCHIVED Children's Academic Or Cognitive Performance
nvsmom replied to azmontessoriteacher's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
A friend with a son who has Aspergers went gluten-free and she saw huge leaps and bounds with his social and verbal abilities. The Autictic community has a huge following of gluten-free and CF people with great success stories. I imagine there have to be some studies in that area that might be easy to find. My son is suspected Aspergers (mild) and I have... -
ARCHIVED Have You Read The Book Wheat Belly?
nvsmom replied to lookat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Love that book. Scared the heck out of me! I read it about a year ago (before my celiac diagnosis...or even before I susected) and reduced my flour consumption by quite a bit. Great read. -
Those two meds sound contradictory... tricky. I have idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura ITP), which is a bleeding disorder in which the immune system destroys platelets (for blood clotting). I found out when... well, I wouldn't stop bleeding. I've heard ITP is linked to celiac but I'm not positive. For other disorders, you would have to test for...
