  1. I agree. Retest for celiac disease and then gluten-free. You already know that she has a positive result (4 times normal is very positive) and does better gluten-free. Don't let her suffer due to some doctor's ignorance.
  2. Sometimes they call late onset diabetes of adulthood (LADA or latent autoimmune diabetes of adults) is referred to as type 1.5 because it sets in so slowly. LADA can take years to fully turn into type 1 whereas in kids it seems to happen faster, within days to weeks instead. Because LADA takes so long to set in, patients often have symptoms of type 2 and...
  3. Blah. It's minus 25C without the windchill right now. With the windchills it's in the minus 30's. Blech. Tomorrow's HIGH is minus 26C. The high!! The low is minus 30 something...That's just so very wrong. I heard that Regina (capital of Sakatchewan) is expected to get to -38C and have a strong wind that could take the windchill down to -67C. I can...
  4. Meh, We Calgarians don't like to acknowledge that Toronto exists... or baseball. There are only Flames and Stampeders.
  5. The DGP IgA and DGP IgG are definitely the best tests for kids. The tTG IgG would be helpful too as soe people, and it seems more common in kids to me, tend to test positive in only IgG based tests even though the have normal IgA. You could also request the older Anti-gliadin antibdy tests (AGA IgA and AGA IgG) but they aren't as reliable. I would not bother...
  6. Ditto the others. A positive test is a positive test. She definitely has problems with gluten (gliadin) if she failed the AGA IgG test. That test is not often run because it is not that sensitive and it commonly misses celiacs, but it caught her. See pages 8-12 of this report for more info on the tests: Open Original Shared Link Low IgA is more common...
  7. It can hit with tendinitis. I personally did not experience that, mine was joint pain in the form of arthralgias, but I am sure others have. My arthritis has improved tremendously in the last year (I have been gluten-free for over a year and a half).
  8. The complications listed in this paper are pretty basic but it's guidelines from the World Gastroenterology Organisation so it's pretty agreed upon. Open Original Shared Link This has a bunch of info too. Open Original Shared Link. But some studies are showing tht celiac disease may protect us from some cancers, so don't give him this one if he is likely...
  9. Ugh. Winter is back in full force again up here. Minus 30'sC again with the windchill. Water mains are breaking and flooding some major roads with ice because it's so cold. I think it's supposed to warm-up to seasonal on Wednesday and then plunge back into winter. I can't wait for spring....sometime in late April or May. Sigh. NO ONE is allowed to mention...
  10. Baseball... Hmmm, I don't think we would even manage to qualify for that - it's not that big up here. LOL
  11. Be patient with the diet in the first few weeks. Some of us experience withdrawal and feel more fatigued, headachey and grumpy for a couple of weeks. Doesn't help when we're stressed because we're trying to figure out what to eat! LOL Go through your kitchen and check boullions, canned soups, packaged mixes, nuts, raisens, cereals, soy sauce, teriyaki...
  12. Salad is a safer item. Make sure they aren't picking croutons out or using possibly cc'ed sunflower seeds or raisens. Stuff like that. If there is chicken on it, make sure it is grilled "naked" on a clean grill.... You still have to be carefull, but it's one of the safer things to eat. To be honest, salad, eggs and bacon are the only things I've had in a...
  13. You could always make your home gluten-free since you are the cook. Use gluten-free noodles, bread, sauces and condiments.... It would be a lot safer and wouldn't hurt anyone. They can get their gluten fixes when out of the house.
  14. My favourite fortune cookie says, "Acceptance is the key to happiness." I take that to mean that there are some things in my life that I can not change and accepting that and working with it will make me applied than if I fight it i just turned forty, I would rather be thirty but nothing is going to change it so I embrace it instead. There are other things...
  15. I agree with Cooties, a high tTG IgA is a sure sign of celiac disease. The tTG IgA can ave false negatives but they tend to always be a very weak positive, and a 300 is about as positive ad it gets. I had a tTG IgA of >200, as well as a positive EMA IgA, so I skipped the endoscopic biopsy with my doctor's blessing. I knew damage could be missed in...
  16. Back to back cold and flu - nasty! When I was about 18, I became really tired, was passing out at work (and on the bus - that was interesting LOL), and had a very heavy period that did not stop for over a cycle. I had just started birth control pills a month or so before so I gave my symptoms more time than I should have as I thought my symptoms was...
  17. Could you get in to see a dermatologist to see if your rash is indeed dermatitis herpetiformis (dh) since you have an active rash already. The doctor would need to biopsy the area beside the rash and request specific celiac tests are run on the samples. A small number of celiacs are diagnosed this way so it may be worth looking into. Your family doctor...
  18. I don't have a spleen and I don't vaccinate myself except for the pneumonia one every five years or so. Meningitis is also recommended. My doctors do like to push that I get the flu vaccine but I stopped doing it over a decade ago, and frankly I've been much healthier since I did that. I tended to "coincidentally" get the flu immediately following the...
  19. (hugs) It's definitely harder to eat well when stressed. Hide emergency goodies in the freezer.... Of course if you are anything like me, those goodies will disappear pretty quick when the going gets tough, so don't buy too much. LOL
  20. Ugh. That's just such a shame. That poor woman will probably eat herself into an early grave.
  21. That was a great Olympics! We loved it in our house. Canada was third for golds and forth for overall number of medals. The USA would have been second for total medals and forth for gold. AS my boys would say, "Awesomeness!" LOL Now we will impatiently wait for the World Cup this summer!
  22. I do not know much about the pancreas and fat absorption... I'll get that disclaimer out of the way now. But I think if you have a tough time digesting fats, then you would need to consume more fats to give your body what it needs, and it does need fat. I wouldn't cut fat unless it is causing health problems. Not absorbing fat would be like not absorbing...
  23. Happens to me too. Early on I did gluten myself a few times and I could tell when I had due to certain symptoms. I do get flare-ups of other symptoms (headaches, fatigue, arthritis) that don't seem to have anything to do with getting glutened but i believe are linked to celiac disease as they get less frequent and severe as time goes on. Two steps forward...
