  1. A friend invited me to brunch here (it's a restaurant, not just a bakery) and I was soooo looking forward to it until I checked out the menu (and reviews). Here's their slogan, as printed on the menus: "no phony allergies, bogus intolerances, nutritional nonsense, or provincial preferences” I'm sure the owner thinks that's oh-so-clever... They seem t...
  2. Hey, welcome!
  3. I second the SIBO check. Just read one study saying that a large percentage (sorry can't recall the number) of celiacs who haven't responded to gluten-free diet have SIBO. This wouldn't account for high blood antibody levels, of course, but could account for continuing GI issues because they can be quite similar.
  4. Oh honey, try not to worry too much. If it were me, I'd get him a quick note, email or phone message mentioning in a friendly way that you recall some strange bits of conversation and just want to clarify that you respect him and are grateful for his abilities. You can use the pretext of thanking him for conducting a safe procedure. Then he'll know but you...
  5. OMG, that's awesome.... thanks for the laughs! the hole in the bread one, sheesh, when I see one of those slices, I'm like 'That's 75 cents worth of air right there!'

ARCHIVED Where Are The Great Doctors?

So many times I see posts here advising "get a new doctor" when someone's MD or GI is clearly behind the times. I've said it myself! But now I'm wondering where all these new and better doctors are hiding? In a small town like mine, we don't have many choices. So where are the forward-thinking doctors as far as NCGI and celiac? Are we talking like...
  7. That must be making you crazy! Can you get a copy of the biopsy report? If it shows signs of villi damage, I'd go with the celiac diagnosis myself. As far as I know, there is no biopsy finding that can indicate "gluten intolerance but not celiac." There are a few other rare causes of villi damage (certain parasites, for example) but non-celiac gluten...
  8. I know! Funny thing is, I am exceptionally tolerant in the rest of life. I should say gluten and wheat are intolerant of me!!
  9. Oh okay... well, once I get my colonoscopy/endoscopy out of the way (I keep picturing a chicken on a spit! ), I'll look into the antibodies questions. I learn so much around here!!!

    ARCHIVED First Kiss

Awww, this is sweet. I like the "just mention it while talking about CC" approach, too, good idea. You can list a few things that you always have to be super careful about (I dunno, tasting from someone's plate, your food touching non-gluten-free food on a serving platter, even kissing... ) and see if he picks up on it? Have fun, it'll all work out if...
  11. I made the brownies at sea level and they also came out like the black tar thing. The next time I undercooked them a bit and although they still fell flat as a pancake they sure were good!
  12. I see they have a cool brownie pan too! I've been making South Beach black bean brownies and I think I might have to get that pan now. But then, I never met a kitchen gadget I didn't like!
  13. Irish, that is very encouraging... I really don't want to go on medication, so maybe I should stop worrying and just stay the gluten-free course lol....
  14. Thanks for all the enlightening tips! My GI is very good on the gut stuff (so far) so I want to keep him for that... but for this issue, I think I will seek another specialist or do the home tests or both. Maybe the home temperature test once this #@!! cold is gone... I never really considered this problem because even though I usually have a low...
  15. After two entire months with the flu followed by severe bronchitis, I felt almost healthy for about two weeks -- but now I'm coming down with the flu/cold again!!! Arrgghh! Is this common? Do you just keep getting cold after cold? Yikes, I feel like I have no immune system left. If it matters, I've been gluten-free for 7 months but still am battling...
  16. BTW, here's a pretty thorough report on SIBO for GI doctors (apparently it's still being edited) that mentions hypoalbuninemia (sp?) and edema in the extremities... I learned a lot from it! www.gidoctor.net/client_files/file/Review-of-SIBO.pdf
  17. Oh how awful for you! My GI actually called off my pre-endo gluten challenge after two days because he didn't like my reaction. I didn't argue! I feel bad for you having to tough through so much agony. Glad to hear they moved the scopes up sooner though! And the massage sounds heavenly.....
  18. I get very small hives all over my stomach... also my lips, eyes and cheeks swell up.
  19. For what it's worth: I had a low blood albumin level two years ago that became low-normal just before starting treatment with the gluten-free diet last year. I've also had terrible ankle and leg swelling too, but it seems more related to a tendon disorder (PTTD). My current GI doc says low albumin is an indicator of SIBO, Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth...
  20. I had my TSH tested recently. Came out to 2.6 and I keep reading that it should be close to 1. I pointed this out to my GI doc, that new studies say anything over 2 is hypothyroid. He repeated that it's normal and said our lab uses 4 or more as the standard. I know very little about thyroid stuff so didn't feel I could argue with him. What I want to...
  21. My cat and dust allergies have gotten worse Not to mention that I've developed a wheat allergy, quite apart from being gluten intolerant.
  22. I've had strange mouth and tongue sensations ever since coming down with my gluten intolerance last year... having it today again. At time I felt it was caused by a vitamin B6 deficiency I've had before, but who knows?
  23. Here is some basic info about it, although it seems you have to buy the book to get all the details: Open Original Shared Link
  24. Thank you so much for the helpful replies. I'll pass the info on to him. My bro has his MRI scheduled for this morning, so we'll see what they say. He's also requesting the celiac blood panel.
