Don't know if is this is any good, but my mom just gave me a recipe for taco mix that you can keep on hand. You could add/subtract to your liking. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but here goes: 8 tsp dried minced onion 2 T chili powder 2 tsp cornstarch 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp dried oregano 1/4 tsp cayenne powder Mix...

ARCHIVED Help! Looking For Kinnikinik!
azmom replied to laurenv2003's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe all of Kinnickinnick stuff is gluten free, which means it must be wheat free. My husband loves the cheese tapioca rice bread, the chocolate glazed donuts, and the k-toos cookies (like oreos). I also keep the graham cracker crumbs and the chocolate cookie crumbs on hand for making pies and cheesecakes. They are just as good as glutenous ones... -
ARCHIVED Deli Meat
azmom replied to es2443's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We like Hormel Natural Choice because it doesn't have nitrates in it. Nitrates tend to give us headaches. -
Remember that it's pretty hot here this time of year. If you are planning to do anything outside, make it as early as possible in the day. (It was 110 in Phx the other day. ) Sedona is worth the drive and will be cooler. I highly recommend Slide Rock Park, but make sure you do it during the week as there are generally lines to get in on the weekends....

I second the vote for the Kinnikinnick graham crumbs..they are just as good as the regular ones. Their Chocolate Cookie crumbs are also delicious to use as pie crust.

azmom replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here are some things that my family enjoys..and not all of us eat gluten free. Pamela's pancake mix, Dowd & Rogers cake mixes, Tinkyada pasta, Amy's rice Mac & Cheese, Amy's cheese enchiladas, Ian's gluten-free Chicken Nuggets and fish sticks. Hope this helps. -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's
azmom replied to gfmolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We love the waffles, flaxseed tortilla chips, sweet potato chips, brown rice tortillas, and peanut butter. Recently, my TJs started carrying gluten free pancakes (in freezer section) that DH says are awesome. (I didn't get a chance to taste them, cuz he snarfed them all in 2 days!!) -
ARCHIVED 40th B-day Gag Gift Ideas/poems?
azmom replied to StrongerToday's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
How about a sympathy card that "mourns the passing of your youth". (I can say that, cuz I'm over 40!) -
ARCHIVED Cheek Swab Testing
azmom replied to clh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry I don't have any advice for you, but I also am curious how others will answer. My husband has celiac and I suspect my son does. Would like to get both of my children tested, but don't want to put either one thru the endoscopy. But, on the other hand, I am concerned about the validity of the cheek swab and the Enterolab testing. They are both relatively... -
ARCHIVED Calling All Gluten Free "chefs"
azmom replied to JennyC's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Use the cookie crumbs just like you would normal cookie crumbs. Also try their gluten-free graham cracker crumbs. Everyone in my family loves them both. For an easy dessert, just make your crust, fill w/ chocolate pudding and top w/ whip cream. Boy, I'm getting hungry....gotta go! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Tucson Restaurants
azmom replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Monica, It's La Parilla Suiza...we haven't eaten there, but my husband (the celiac) generally will eat at any mexican place (and there are lots of them around here!) He just makes sure he gets corn tortillas and asks about gluten if there are any sauces used. We just ate at Habaneros today...was awesome! Fish tacos were the best ever! Keep in mind... -
You should call the manager and inform him of the situation. You don't need to "complain", but "inform" him/her in a nice way. This is especially important because if they are going to offer a gluten free menu, they are leading you to believe that it will be served gluten free. They need to know that their staff is not providing what they are selling....

ARCHIVED Chicken Nuggets/tenders
azmom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I use crushed corn flakes or crushed cheesy rice crackers. Sometimes, I dip the chicken strips in ranch dressing, then roll in corn flakes or cracker crumbs and bake. (Or I cheat and buy Ian's gluten-free nuggets!) -
I read somewhere that Pfizer had bought the rights to it, but upon further research discovered it may cause liver damage, so they didn't do anything w/ the rights. Be careful... Do a search of "hoodia side effects".

ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill Products And Msg
azmom replied to HawkFire's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Check out this link Open Original Shared Link It says to not ask about MSG, but instead to ask about "free glutamic acid" (see page 2 on link). It also mentions how you can report companies to the FDA if their labeling is incorrect. -
ARCHIVED Safeway Products
azmom replied to I3Daniel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, I also shop at Trader Joes, Sprouts, Sunflower Market and Wild Oats. I find different things at each. (Such a pain!) Not sure where you are located, but my Sprouts in Tucson carries alot of Glutino items that my husband and son enjoy (Pizza, alfredo pasta, mac & cheese). Sprouts is the only place I can find them. It is pricy, but worth it to keep... -
ARCHIVED Safeway Products
azmom replied to I3Daniel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow!! That's a heck of a list!! Safeway is my favorite regular grocery store. I'll have to peruse the list more closely to see if I can expand my list of usual items. How appropriate that Safeway should provide a list so we can shop the "safe way"! (I know...bad pun...but I couldn't resist!) -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cereal
azmom replied to Chancer7's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My kids enjoy EviroKids Panda Puffs and Dora Cinnamon Stars. Also, cream of rice hot cereal w/ a few chocolate chips mixed in to make it yummy! -
I agree. Everyone in my family loves Earth Balance. We think it tastes just as good as butter. I use both the spreadable and the sticks for everything. Haven't bought butter in several years.

ARCHIVED I Need Some Help I'm Traveling To Arizona
azmom replied to Alicia's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I live in Tucson. For gluten-free groceries, you can go to Trader Joes, Sprouts, Sunflower Market, Wild Oats, and there is also a health food store on Broadway & Craycroft (can't remember the name, but the manager is celiac, so she carries a good variety of gluten-free stuff...maybe it's called New Life?) As for restaurants, many mexican dishes... -
ARCHIVED Can Dh Look Like Pimples?
azmom replied to nama shivaya's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I do not have celiac (my husband and son do), but I do have a problem w/ inner ear itching. The ENT says it is dermatitis in my ears and gives me Betamethasone Dipropionate Lotion USP 0.05% drops to use when they bother me. They work great. Before the drops, I actually tried to itch them so much that I made polyps form and had to have them surgically removed... -
ARCHIVED Packing Lunches For School For Picky Eaters
azmom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I use Tinkyada noodles (elbow or spiral). Cook them separately, rinse well and add them to the soup towards the end of cooking. The whole family loves it. ( 2 gluten-free, 2 non gluten-free). Try the hummus w/ cucumbers or carrots also. Sue -
ARCHIVED Packing Lunches For School For Picky Eaters
azmom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Does anyone have some suggestions for something to pack with hummus? We used to use pitas. I guess I could use strips of gluten-free bread or tortilla chips- other ideas would be welcome. Also- I've got tin salmon in the cupboard and I'm wondering if there is something I could do with it that my kids might eat for lunch? Eggs too... any ideas? I pack... -
ARCHIVED My Son Has Given Up Breakfast
azmom replied to missy'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have 1 child that is gluten free and 1 that is not. Some of the items they eat are not considered breakfast food, but I figure it doesn't really matter, as long as it's not loaded w/ sugar. Here are some of the things they enjoy, which can be gluten-free or not: muffins, cheese crisps (the gluten-free brown rice tortillas from Trader Joes are awesome... -
