    ARCHIVED Long Island Doc?

There must be some doctors with celiac knowledge at Stony Brook. Our celiac support group was saying there is talk that Stony Brook is thinking about starting up a Celiac Center like Columbia University has. Wouldn't that be wonderful? I can't help you with a doctor though. My doctor has no problem believing I am celiac, but he has very little knowledge...
  2. I was diagnosed with, what my doctor called, pre-asthma, last year, I am 52. I carry a Albuterol inhaler with me, just in case I need it. I am allergic to smoke too, but the worst for me is chemicals, something like Carpet Fresh powders, will make me unable to breathe in minutes. Odors are very harsh for me. This is an interesting thread!
  3. I got this email to go to this site and you can send this letter to your congressman, I have sent it before, but it never hurts to keep sending it: Open Original Shared Link . It had some very interesting facts in it too:
  4. B12 is very important for celiac's, most of us do not get enough, and when we were eating gluten, most of us were deficient of B12. Most doctors will tell us our B12 level is fine, when they really do not know what a good level is. Do you know what your B12 level was? If your level was say, around 200 and your doctor says that is fine, it's not, that's...
  5. It certainly can. The Epstein Barr virus will always lay dormant in your body, and will always show up in your blood work. If your Epstein Barr virus is active right now, then yes, it will cause fatigue, and, if you are not very careful, it will develop into cronic fatigue syndrome. A friend of mine's daughter has it now. She had mono at 5 yrs old, she...
  6. One thing I know is a big problem--high fructose corn syrup. It's not good for any of us, and if you read ingredients, you will see it is in so many of our foods. It adds calories and definitely makes you gain weight! It's in yogurt, some fruits, cereal, etc--you think you are buying something good for you, and there it is!! I do not eat anything anymore...
  7. It's a common sense type thing. Kissing has to be off limits when eating, that's a givin. You just have to be more careful. I have been gluten free for almost 8 yrs and have never been glutened by a kiss. Of course, just after he had eaten a sandwich, or something, I would just kiss him on the cheek. If he walks in the door, and I go to kiss him--he...
  8. Actually, gaining weight in a celiac is just as common as losing weight, before being diagnosed. Many undiagnosed celiac's, even those who have diarrhea much of the time, can be very overweight. A very overweight person can be undernourished. I was my heaviest, when I was my sickest. I just could not understand why I kept gaining weight when I was so...
  9. The best advice I can give you is to keep your food simple. No processed foods, try to stay away from gluten free items like breads and crackers, all those things. Eat simply, rice, maybe a baked potato, chicken breast--very mild foods for a few weeks, maybe several weeks until you are feeling better. Your tummy needs time to feel better. Mild foods are...
  10. It is true that many celiac's go through menopause early, it is also true that some women will go through menopause early. My perimenopause started around 40, at 42, I was going through the hot flashes, by 49, I was post menopausal. I have had women say to me, "You can't possibly know what menopause is like, you are too young!" Society thinks you have...
  11. All very sad! When I was a teenager, I was berated by a dentist because I had to have so many fillings. I felt guilty about that for a long time. Now I have to wonder if it wasn't silent celiac going on, even then. My teeth are a mess now, I didn't find out about celiac disease until I was 45. I have a grandson who has an enamel problem with his teeth...
  12. Being celiac is not that much different than not being celiac when it comes to losing weight. You have to be careful with the flours, they are heavier than wheat flours, that is true. I would eat more whole foods, more veggies, chicken, tuna, that kind of thing. And exercise, that is what helps you lose. My sister is a dietician and she always stresses...
  13. I don't agree with this either. More women may be diagnosed, only because they don't give up as easily--sorry guys!!! We are the tougher sex!!! Me too nyspur, parts of your story are me. I would go without breakfast and lunch, eat my entire meal at night. I had panic/anxiety attacks, agoraphobia--had it all, was even diagnosed by a doctor with it...
  14. Different intolerance's can have completely different symptoms. Soy for me, is constipating, as is corn and rice. Gluten used to cause severe diarrhea, now it causes neurological symptoms. Red dye makes me break out. It's all trial and error.
  15. Yeah, me too. I react to bandaids. Days after one has been removed, you can see where it was. They suck the color out of my skin! Often I get a rash from them too. I guess we are the lucky ones!!!
  16. Well, I wasn't getting the answers I needed from the doctors. I didn't know I needed to ask for a B12 blood draw specifically, I thought the doctors would know to do that without my asking. I mean, geez, here I am celiac, with complaints of neuropathy. They are doing nerve conduction tests, I had already been diagnosed with carpal tunnel 8 yrs before-...
  17. You probably are not allergic to potatoes, maybe just intolerant. The only way to tell about other nightshades, is by trial and error. I gave them all up after I found I couldn't eat 3 or 4 of them, that was enough for me. I get ill within 20 mins when eating tomatoes, any type of tomatoes, sauce, raw, juice, no matter how the tomato is. Green peppers...
  18. I get my B12 from www.Lame Advertisement.com . It's called Biochem Superior B12, made by Country Life. Country Life Vitamins have just become certified gluten free. It's a sublingual methylcobalamin B12, which is much better for us to take than cyancobalamin. I take 3000mcg daily, you may want to start out at a smaller dose. It does take a few months...
  19. I read on a list somewhere that they were gluten free, all except the silver ones. So I bought some. They made me very sick. I gave them away and will not try them again. I stick to my Nature Made vitamins. Country Life Vitamins (which can be ordered from Lame Advertisement.com very easily and quickly online) have now been certified gluten free. I buy...
  20. I'm sorry, I do not remember a thread about water. For me, the water doesn't matter. I drink bottled water, simply because I can carry it with me to work, keep it sitting on my desk. I prefer my water to be room temperature most of the time, so I like it this way. I do drink water from the tap at home sometimes, I see no difference. It is city water...
  21. My sister is a celiac too, and both of her son's wedding receptions included gluten free foods. They were integrated in with the other foods, they just were naturally gluten free foods. Such as mashed potatoes, vegetables, chicken, sweet and sour meatballs (which she made gluten free, no one can tell), you just have to be creative sometimes. Ask first...
  22. When in the hospital, you have to watch out for the same things as anywhere else. A hospital is no different. Hospitals do not use allergy free products any more than anyone else. Even when I told them I was gluten free, even when I took them a list of gluten free meds, they still would bring me vitamins or such, with no labels, and they had no idea if...
  23. When I was still in Michigan, over 3 yrs ago, Kroger was very celiac freindly then, in my opinion, anyways. They had a "special diet" section, even then, that was in St, Johns, Michigan. I loved Krogers. I am on Long Island now, and I really miss Krogers, there aren't any here! Some of the Stop-n-Shop's have special diet sections, as do King Kullen...
  24. On the other hand, there are those of us who have never been glutened by Lays. I only eat Lay's Regular Chips or Ruffles Regular Chips--none of the others, and I have never been glutened by them.
  25. Wow, Gfp, you must be a lot older than me! I'm 52 and my mom used a hair dryer. She never could towel dry her hair, she has way too much! My mom never walked to the store and carried groceries home either. My mom has always had a vacuum too. It was different for my grandparents, but our parent's have had modern convience's. She had an automatic washer...
