  1. Georgie--it depends on the hospital. Go to the dietician before your hospital stay and ask questions. Find out what she/he knows. My sister is the dietician of a hospital and she is celiac--every employee in her kitchen knows how to feed a celiac. She has a special area all set up with gluten free supplies. She will be teaching another huge hospital...
  2. I react to wheat, oats, and soy on my skin, usually breaking out in hives. It definitely matters. I work for a doctor who insists I do not know what I am talking about, of course, he doesn't live celiac disease, so he can SAY anything he wants. Last week I tried a new liquid bath soap, St. Ives. A few years back I had used one of their lotions and...
  3. Hey Kat--long time no see--how are you doing other than being glutened? Charcoal tablets are suppose to absorb stomach acid, I think anyways! I know I was told to try them once, yet never did.
  4. I would like to add: I have read "The Gluten Connection" by Shari Lieberman and it is an excellent book. She does a wonderful job of explaining celiac disease and she doesn't tell you to forget about the tests. What she does tell you is that if you have had tests and still feel that a gluten free diet would be best, then definitely try it out to see. ...
  5. Yeah, listen to Lonewolf! I wish I had known about celiac disease when my kids were young. Two of my sons have requested to be checked for celiac disease and their doctors told them they do not look celiac, it's not necessary to test them! My son Mike, at 2 weeks old had an ear infection. That poor baby was ill for the first 6 weeks of his life and finally...
  6. Palfour, I'm not sure where you live in Nassau. I live in Suffolk County and we have a great support group which meets in West Islip. We do have many members from Suffolk County. We meet on Higbie Lane at an old elementary school that is now a community center--the first Tuesday of the month, usually. If you would like more info, just pm me--ok. You...
  7. Substituting the idea of a brief straying away from your plan instead of feeling guilty, and learning to return more and more quickly to healthier habits, is more realistic. It's also easier and more enjoyableThis is completely different from eating gluten. Cheating on a diet can not harm you, eating gluten when you are gluten intolerant is not the same...
  8. As was said, not so much guilt maybe as an overall sadness. When I had my kids, I didn't know I was a celiac. I have 5 kids and I think they would all be better off gluten free. My daughter was born with a hip defect and yes, I feel very bad about that, yet I know it was not my fault that it happened, there was nothing I could have done to prevent it without...
  9. As I think about this, cheating is the best word for cheating. I have never thought it good to put a pretty face on something bad. If you want to cheat yourself of life, that is your decision.
  10. That's a tough one.
  11. Not to be negative here but..... I have been strictly, very strictly gluten-free now for almost 5 years. I have not even caught a cold. My personal take on this is that my body had built up a 'hyperdrive' immune response in response to my constant glutenings. I read somewhere the other day that celiacs are not as prone to picking up viruses because our immune...
  12. Thank you, I even found mention of the iodine test in a few of those posts.
  13. Hang in there. It does get better. I think probably at least 80% of us know just how you feel. Don't make any major changes right now in your life. Just keep working on gluten free and give your body a chance to feel better.
  14. I tried to do a search here--when I typed in "iodine deficiency" the search gave me everything with the word "deficiency"in it then, when I typed in "iodine" the search gave me everything with "iodine" in it. Do you know how many times "iodine" or "deficiency" is used in this forum???????? Well, anyways, yesterday I was reading up on thyroid problems...
  15. Yes Nancy, exactly what I meant. You hate it when people with celiac get angry with other people when they don't understand, even though those other people have no way of understanding. You wish people would see that those people don't mean any harm and oftentimes think they are being helpful. Exactly. If no GluGirl needs to get this out, she should feel...
  16. Amazing how many of us chewed ice. I used to have a little bit of tea with my ice. Then it got so that I just wanted ice. My sister was the same and we would purchase bags of ice to keep us in ice. She is celiac too and her iron level was so low, she had to have iron IV's. Neither of us crave ice any longer--as a matter of fact, I never have ice anymore...
  17. Uh...Deb- this is a friendly reminder that I started this thread for people to VENT so if you don't want to listen to others vent, please don't read. There's an equally great thread on Things that are good about Celiac. Plenty of positivity there! remember...writing about it IS one way of letting go of the anger! Uh...Mtndog- this is a friendly reminder...
  18. Hate celiac disease, if you must: for being so hard to diagnose hate that other diseases have found their way into our systems because we were not diagnosed soon enough hate the medical community for not recognizing celiac disease to begin with But, don't hate family for not understanding something that even doctors don't understand. We are told...
  19. Let me first tell you a story that is one of the best reasons I am so against legalizing, lets call them "recreational drugs": I have a 5 1/2 month old grandson. His name is Ethin. He is very small for his age, in the first 3 months of his life, he gained 3#. He has sleep apnea, GERD, dairy intolerant, soy intolerant, doesn't utilize his proteins properly...
  20. You don't want to be drinking coffee while recovering on the gluten-free diet or if you have inflammation... if ever. Coffee is a strong gut irritant and will slow your progress significantly This is only true for some, not for all. Coffee has never bothered me, never. Tea has bothered me. I stopped drinking tea for a long time after going gluten free...
  21. OK no stone throwing then but tobacco and alcohol are also illegal for teenagers and depending where you live so is dope... Yes, tobacco and alcohol are illegal for teens, but marijuana is illegal for everyone, at least in America and in my opinion should only be used as a prescription for those terminally ill. The same can be said for many of the meds...
  22. Yes, God made marijuana and people made beer, yet God also made wheat--where do you draw the line? In addition, I hardly think marijuana is a subject that should be discussed in an open forum with teenagers--it is an illegal substance. Don't bother throwing stones at me for my opinion--I just feel it's a subject that does not need to be discussed in...
  23. You are the best ones to judge him because you are with him everyday. Myself, I can't handle the heavy gluten free grains. They do not gluten me, yet they do bother my tummy. Does he eat much in the line of grains? If he really likes it, maybe he is eating too much of it and his little tummy is reacting to that. You are absolutely correct about the...
  24. Just back from our meeting tonight and there are 58 vendors coming to the fair. Sounds like it will be really something to attend. Hope to see you there.
  25. Celiac has taught me compassion for others with diseases that are not so visible. It's taught me so much about nutrition, vitamins, and minerals. It's taught me to be patient with those in the world who just can't get it! Contamination issues have taught me how contaminated our world is! Knowing I have celiac has given me back the life I never...
