  1. I am going home (Italy) for a few weeks, and I am staying at my parents'. I am not a diagnosed celiac: my blood tests were negative, so I did not do a biopsy. But I am feeling better on the gluten-free diet because it is slowly getting under control some of the symptoms associated with my thyroid disorder - and that's great. My family is very supportive...
  2. My condolences as well. That must have been very shocking for her, and for you as well.
  3. Hey, that's good to know - I'm taking a friend out before the Messiah at Carnegie Hall, would you recommend that bistro? And are the gluten-free friendly?
  4. What the...? Are you serious? People do it to lose weight? If anything, it has the opposite effect; at least it did so on me, and even if that didn't help with my having to drop +25 lbs, at least it made me feel less of an invalid, and I don't have to plan my routes around ladies rooms anymore. I think that idea only applies to people who eat tons of junk...
  5. oh nom nom nom... sorry, that's as much as I can say right now... Thank you! You have expanded my culinary brain by a factor of 20, approximately. I think daffodil cake is in order - my nerdiness has to celebrate William 'muddy-boots-and-daffodils' Wordsworth, somehow. And pots de creme / ice-cream. And scrambled...
  6. Love2travel, same here! First thing I did was trying to find recipes - I need to learn how to treat game, because I love game meat. I also find that game meat is, in some cases (not all), more humane than factory farm meat, which I have entirely cut out of my fare (which implies cutting out whole sections of dining institutions). Though my finding recipes...
  7. ROFL. I want that Kindle. Oh, wait - my surname means "kindle."
  8. Thanks SIW - it worked tonight; the soy-and-canola was easy to do given the cuisine, they made no problems subbing polenta for potatoes, and when I said I was on a gluten-free diet the manager offered me to cook gluten-free pasta with any of the combinations on the menu, and came by to make sure the order was correctly handled.
  9. JerseyAngel, I got your sweet, sweet card! Thanks for brightening up this gloomy and rainy night!
  10. A friend took me to a restaurant. I had half a bottle of Italian red wine, a small mixed greens salad, braised venison with red wine reduction, oven roasted potatoes, leafy greens, and chestnut puree. I also had flourless hazelnut-chocolate cake with whipped cream and moscato wine for dessert. Now I am sleepy...
  11. I have the same question. I am invited out to dinner tonight, and while I know a couple of places that do gluten-free, I am not sure how to ensure that, and also how to ensure they don't have my other "no no" foods without embarrassing my friend acting like a whimpering chick.
  12. I am spending the holidays in Italy, and I will be barking my own paleo bread there. Unfortunately, I use whites only (for whipping), and we don't have cartons of egg whites there, so we'll have to do it old school. Problem is, I need at leas 12 egg whites for one loaf. Can anyone suggest recipes to use the remaining yolks?
  13. Hugs Loey, and 'shroom. That's not fun. I am glad you are ok now.
  14. Hi Brownie, I have more sympathy than anything because I am going through the same. gluten-free diet helped, now I have cut out grains, too. Not a medical advice, but meditation helps me a lot. Have you ever tried breathing exercises? These things increase mindfulness, which I find help with my awful forgetfulness.
  15. Made coconut-herbed pizza with cherry-tomato sauce, cayenne pepper, oregano, garlic, baby romaine and jumbo shrimp. Not bad, for a first time, but a pizza in a brownie pan is a bit sad.
  16. True. When things got worse about a year ago I started eating less and less grains; and everyone around me mocked me because I was "one of those non-carby people." And I am a baking fanatic. And you know what? At the bottom low of my thyroid disorder I was messed up enough to believe that they were right and I forced myself to eat stuff even if it was making...
  17. You could make a chocolate mousse with some French orange liquor and serve it inside halved-and-scooped-empty oranges, and decorate it with some candied ginger. There is also a version made with white chocolate and pink grapefruit.
  18. Hi Max, If you have antibodies and villiar damage - DON'T get the spelt bread. Spelt also contains gluten. Sometimes, gluten-free products add lots of weird things in order to make up for the properties of gluten. It may be something like that. I had a moment of breakfast crisis, too, when I had to go gluten-free and then grain-free. But there's...
  19. What a beautiful story! I am glad to see there are other people who change their lifestyles for the sake of a loved one, it makes me feel less of a nutcase (I learnt to cook gluten-free and DF years ago when I was dating someone who had celiac, and would have everything separate when I was cooking/serving him stuff)
  20. gee, and I am whining because the same has lasted for about 6 months for me! Adelaide, any chance it may not be milk, or cheese per se, but some additive they sneak into the cheese? That did happen to me, causing severe D and blistery rash.
  21. Well done! I've never managed to make crumble! My diabetic mum is organizing a gluten-free, grain-and-legume free version of our Christmas dinner for me.
  22. Make sure you post the recipe! I went to the supermarket to buy a bar of Michel Cluziel chocolate. A random gentleman in coat, shades, and hat screams at me in the aisle: "where's the mayonese???" I jerk, and falter "It's, uh, erm, I think, maybe that way... I... I... I don't know, I never bought mayonese!" "Oh, don't bother. I thought you worked...
  23. 'shroom, did you call? I once read celiac disease being called the great mime or something, because its symptoms and damages "look like" lots of other diseases, as Paul says. If you were eating ancient grains in AUS/NZ, those have a smaller quantity of gluten than Dwarf Wheat. They are still damaging for coeliacs, but maybe the symptoms take a...
  24. First of all - hugs. There is nothing worse than a therapy that doesn't help. Have you been tested for other autoimmune disorders? They tend to come in clusters, so that would be something I'd check. For example, many celiacs also have thyroid disorders (reason why I am here), though they don't cause mouth ulcers, as far as I know. SO, yes, intolerances...
  25. Ouch, hugs, tutu's mommy. My grannie had diverticulitis, I think my mum has it, and a pediatrician suggested I had it as a baby (so I getting checked for that again). What I have observed, is that somehow cereals make it worse, and it may have nothing to do with intolerance/allergies. As she grew older, my grannie was miserable if she ate pasta. I am sorry...
