ARCHIVED U.c., Candidiasis, Gluten Intolerence?
nettiebeads replied to darkangel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No average, it's very individualistic. Three weeks seems to be the minimum, but only if 100% gluten-free. Three to six months is more normal. Remember, your innards are damaged and the healing time depends on how much damage and how long you have been sick before the gluten-free diet. And on your own physiology - if you are normally a fast or slow or... -
ARCHIVED Walmart Brand Black Pepper?
nettiebeads replied to bluelotus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just checked my Great Value black pepper (it's old too). The labeling laws were in effect when this can was purchased, and as it doesn't have anything else added except black pepper, nothing is printed on the can for ingredients. But black pepper isn't an expensive item - replace it if you have doubts. I know I'll be going back to WalMart tonight or... -
Yep, unfortunately. Sometimes they will put things on the regular Discovery or TLC from the health channel to promote the health channel, but not on a regular basis. It costs way too much for me to extend my cable to include the health channel, darn it. But a friend at work saw that program already and told me about it (and this was after I had a fiasco...

I've had what I think were gallbladder attacks - I have read where those with total hysterectomies are more prone to have their gb removed later, so I associated the attacks with my hysterectomy. Come to find out others with celiac disease also have problems with their gb. My dh, when we were first dating, made the most wonderful meal for me (he's an ex...

ARCHIVED Confused About Icing Sugar
nettiebeads replied to aberglund's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not familiar with that brand. My icing sugar (or powdered sugar or 10x sugar) has beet sugar and cornstarch. Maybe that's what's triggering the non gluten-free label - the starch. I guess you would have to contact the company or buy icing sugar that does have the ingredients listed. When in doubt - don't -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed In Childhood- Now Adult
nettiebeads replied to KatieKat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, the gluten-free diet would be cheaper than dr's testing, and it is a valid diagnostic tool - the gluten or diet challenge. That's how I was dx'd 9 years ago. But you do have to be 100% gluten-free - no wheat, oats (they're cross-contaminated in the US. The official verdict on oat itself is still out), rye or barley. No malt from barley, or spelt... -
ARCHIVED Celiacs Off Gf Diet?
nettiebeads replied to ruddabega's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with darlindeb and cornbread. Ask your cousin how much rat poison would be safe for him to eat. Even if there are no outward/noticeable results from ingesting gluten harm is being done. I know, I've done it. For the longest time I didn't understand malt, but after joining this forum I realized that I had been glutening myself for years - albeit... -
ARCHIVED U.c., Candidiasis, Gluten Intolerence?
nettiebeads replied to darkangel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately after reading a lot of posts, it's not strange, but almost the norm, for celiac not to be mentioned regarding gi problems. -
ARCHIVED Cocktails Anyone?
nettiebeads replied to Threebrainedbeing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most vodka is grain based but the gluten is removed during the distallation process. Thank God I can still have vodka, rum, tequila, brandy, cognac. I've always been allergic to beer - probably the hops, so that part of the diet wasn't a problem. But I used to drink those malt based beer replacements (smirnoffs and bicardi things) but came to find out... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Called Me A Hypochondriac
nettiebeads replied to Nantzie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry to hear you're having to go through this. Your health is important and it's good you're taking these issues seriously, even if no one else is. So what if he and his family are labeling you? You have a right to do what you need to do to get healthy. I've experienced a little of having your family turn on you recently and it is most upsetting. So... -
ARCHIVED U.c., Candidiasis, Gluten Intolerence?
nettiebeads replied to darkangel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you tried the gluten-free diet? I have found that my reactions to gluten have changed over the years. Not so much D lately, but still the fatigue and fog. Allergies and autoimmune disorders are tricky things, and as your body changes (age) your body's reactions can differ. And just because you could consume "forbidden" foods w/o ill effects doesn... -
ARCHIVED Reliv? (a Nutritional Food)
nettiebeads replied to nettiebeads's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
THANKS nini!!!! I really appreciate your response. What I hate is that for nearly a decade my brother and his wife had been very understanding and very careful whenever there was a family get together at their house. Now they've changed and make me feel that since I still have celiac it's MY fault. Autoimmune is forever! Sheesh! Thank goodness my other... -
ARCHIVED Small Intestine Biopsy Scheduled
nettiebeads replied to Baston8005's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Okay, if the numbers look like Celiac, why the biopsy? If you really insist on it, fine, but I would recommend going gluten-free as soon as the biopsy is done, not until after the dr gets the results. I've read that there are more chances for a false negative on that because the biopsy may not get to where there is damage in your small intestine. -
I was dx's nine years ago by the gluten-free diet. But I'm in the very small minority of celiac disease sufferers - I had had D for only 6 weeks before I went to my gp. He put me on the diet, went back two weeks later much improved and voila! celiac disease! But he's since retired, had to use another dr (ins. reasons) who didn't understand celiac disease...

ARCHIVED Baking Powder
nettiebeads replied to pixiegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All baking powders are basically corn starch and bicarbinate of soda (that's the rising part) There shouldn't be much else added to it. My non-big name baking powder also has sodium aluminum sulfate and acid phosphate of calcium. All naturally gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Reliv? (a Nutritional Food)
nettiebeads replied to nettiebeads's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You are right, there is a big difference between empirical evidence and anecdotal stories. We had dinner out Fri with the families and I sat next to my brother. As I handed my dining card to the waiter my brother is saying under his breath 'if you were on reliv, you wouldn't need the cards'. I didn't respond to that. And at this restaurant the serve fresh... -
ARCHIVED How Long On A Wheat Free Diet?
nettiebeads replied to poppet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How can you be thick or trying? We're here for each other. Celiac is a complicated disease with a very simple treatment. The gluten-free diet is very simple in principal, but hard at times to execute. And if medicos, dietitians and nutritionists don't understand it, how can we as lay people get our minds to grasp it? And since I'm from across the pond... -
ARCHIVED Vending Machine Peanuts
nettiebeads replied to kevsmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel your pain. It is so DARN FRUSTRATING!!! And now Brachs candies are off my list since they are processed in a place containing wheat. Never mind that the candy itself is gluten-free. The company won't guarantee their products to be gluten-free. I know that they're just covering their company butts, but still.... Better safe than sorry. But I've... -
I got my cards yesterday and just in time to go out with the family to celebrate my mother's 84th b'day. And they work! I handed mine to my server and said I was thinking about the beef tips entree. He came back and said that the chef didn't think it would work for me because the meat came from their meat source with flavor/tenderizers already injected...

Cats have to have an all meat diet - their bodies cannot handle grain. Dogs are a little more flexible on that, but you are right - the right foods for animals does make a difference. When I was (a whole lot) younger, I had a dog that developed skin/hair problems. I took him to the vet, the vet just ran his hand down my dog's back and asked "do you feed...

ARCHIVED I Need Help
nettiebeads replied to tiredofdoctors's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
After 9 years I'm still learning a lot. Words to look for: farina or kernel flour (cover girl blush) My old blush just had kernel flour without the origin stated. The new batches have it listed as "kernel flour (corn)" Another word: avena sativa - I guess it's the latin for OAT! I give my 84 year old mother her showers then use lotion. Her senior companion... -
ARCHIVED Reliv? (a Nutritional Food)
nettiebeads posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My brother and his wife and distributers of Reliv - a supplement that is to better your life. I'm kind of toying with the idea of trying the Reliv Now and an energy booster. Has any one with celiac had experience with the product? I was at the sales pitch last night - there are different products by this company. The Reliv classic had oat bran - so I... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Here...need Help
nettiebeads replied to Laurazee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would recommend the gluten-free diet, but not until the blood is drawn. Then go home and start it right away. It's really pretty simple in theory - do not ingest wheat, wheat products, barley, barley products (malt), rye and unless you can get 100%guaranteed non cross-contaminated oats, stay away from them too. Now for the hard part - wheat is everywhere... -
ARCHIVED Gastritis And Cd?
nettiebeads replied to Tangerine's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with you on this one - I mean, look at how much we lay people have learned from each other! I can see how celiac disease and gastritis would go together. I've had an ulcer (pain meds for a completely unrelated problem that wasn't properly addressed by drs) before I developed celiac disease. But prilosec did the trick. You could adopt the diet... -
ARCHIVED I Need Help
nettiebeads replied to tiredofdoctors's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, all I can say is don't be too hard on yourself. The gluten-free life is one of learning. For what it's worth, I was dx 9 years ago and relatively recently found out from this forum that I've been glutening myself! I used to eat cold cereals that had malt in them and used to drink those malt drinks with flavors (you know - smirnoffs and bacardi beer...
