  1. Hi All,

I know this topic has been discussed in the past, but things change (restaurants close, stores move, etc)...

anyway, we're travelling to OBX (Duck) for the first time in 2 weeks. Does anyone know of any gluten-free restaurants or stores that sell gluten-free foods? I'm especially interested in frozen stuff--it's so expensive to order frozen foods!

    Thanks so much!

I don't get up to Duck much because of the summer traffic congestion. I do know that there is a Food Lion there that should have have some gluten free waffle and perhaps some Amy's frozen foods. Although, I don't know of any specific health food stores in Duck, you could look them up in the phone book. I'm sure there should be one or two.

Most of the Deli's should be able to accommodate you for sandwiches. Boars Head meats and Cheeses should be readily available.

Driving south to Kitty Hawk there is a health food store where I can get Kinnkinnick (sp) frozen breads and cereal. It is located next to the Outer Banks Bread Company.

For a casual lunch or dinner out, go to High Cotton - Mile Post 1, Kitty Hawk. It is a family place with red and white table clothes. They have the best BBQ Chicken and Ribs that I have verified that they are gluten free. The chief is very friendly and aware of Celiac as a family member is Celiac.

Hope this is helpful. Maybe when you get here, the weather will cool down a bit. Currently we are in the high 90's. Make sure you bring some "sand shoes".

Have a great time on the Outer Banks, NC

  2. Hi, I am new to this forum.I was recently tested for Celiacs (of course at my own request). This after 19 years of "IBS" dx. At the beginning of the year when I broke out with DH,I thought I should check into the possibility of Celiacs. Well, long story short...after going gluten-free in April my symptoms have gotten 95% better. I was tested last week and my results were not what I expected...everything was negative.Although,my immunoglobulin A was 62 (referance range 81-463mg/dl). I also had genetic typing done as well.It went as follows:

    HLA-DQB1 03(DQ7)

    HLA-DQB1 05(DQ5)

    HLA-DQ2 Negative

    HLA-DQ8 Negative

Does anyone know what that means? I sure would appreciate any help I could get.

Hello and glad that you have found us.

You mentioned that you went gluten free in April and then you were tested last week.

It is often recommended that before testing that you should stay on a gluten diet up until testing, because is can alter the results. Testing can rule Celiac in, but it cannot rule it out.

Since you felt 95% better on the gluten free diet, perhaps that may be your answer.

I did not have any genetic testing done, so I will leave that to others.

    Again, welcome

  3. Hi everyone, I have been suffering with digestive problems for the past 3 yrs or so, had a baby and a gallbladder removal in between, so I have recently been able to receive testing from my GI doctor. After a colonoscopy and endoscopy, nothing was seen, but my doctor said my biopsy showed some flatten villi in the beginning of my small intestine. The pathology dept. said it was not celiac, but my doc is sending it to another hospital (he works for the state hospital dept.) and will see what they say, he suspects celiac.

We have no known history of celiac (just colon cancer, diverticulitis, Crohns, lactose intolerance, and I don't have any of these myself, as far as I know) in our family. My question is, after all of my research of villi problems, all I can find is celiac as the cause. Could it be something else?? If so, I haven't been able to find it on google, lol.

My next appt is in November, and my doctor said to go off gluten for a week sometime before then and see if it makes a difference.

My symptoms are abdominal pain, loose stools, nausea, and fatigue.

Anyway, thanks for reading and let me know what you think, I appreciate all theories and comments!

Welcome to the forum. Glad that you have found us.

Flattening of the villi is classic in a Celiac diagnosis. I don't see why you doctor has any doubt about this. Your other symptom also fit.

You will find no better source for Celiac than here. (I'll let other chime in - I'm burning the bacon :o )

  4. Here is Hidden Valley's response.....THey will clearly list ingredients....

  5. Cross contamination question?

Does anyone know if gluten can be burned off on the grill. In other words, lets say food is barbequed on the same grill that contains gluten. Is the high heat killing the gluten protein. In other words, denaturing the protein so it no longers harms us. Can food still be contaminated on the grill?

If I recall, at last disccussion...gluten cannot be burned off by heat. Other will post regarding the scientificness.

  6. Are all vinegars equal. I always buy Heinz white vinegar. But when i visit my aunt she often buys no name vinegars. Same with Red Wine vinegar is this gluten free? Are all brands created equal?

I would find it hard to vary quality of vinegars....just my thought. But, with that said, I do buy brand names rather than generic. I like to support companies that have good listing practices.

  7. Tina,

I'll step in if you don't mind. Personal care products can be just as important as food. Shampoos, lotions, toothpaste, lipstick, lip balms, make-up, all have the possibility to find their way into your mouth which can trigger the gluten response.

Although, people do not eat shampoo, but it is highly likely that it can get into your mouth during a shower.

In addition, shared toasters, old wooden spoons, wooden cutting boards, scratch non-stick pots and pans all can hide gluten.

If you need some names of gluten free products to get you started, feel free to ask.

  8. At this late date, I would not involve the Caterer. The food count is established and most likely nothing will change by your attendence.

It is also a very busy time for the wedding party.

I would either eat before attending the wedding and dinner, or bring your own food for you and your family. You most likely would do that anyway when attending a large function.

I have approached the Caterer at a function and asked about certain foods, but never try to hold them up when they are doing a job. And I always find something to eat.

Just my thoughts as a recent Mother of the Bride.

    Hope you enjoy your time.

  9. Hey Maggie:

Glad that you have found us. I can understand you reserve in not wanting to pursue a dx for Celiac. Believe me no one here wants to have celiac, but the bottom line for all of us is better health. So many of us have been sick for years without answers. So a dx of Celiac, to me atleast, was welcome. This is something that I can have controll of with out may medications, surgery or other unmentionables.

With a strong family history and the list of you systems, Celiac may very well be a possibility.

There are two ways you can go.

    1. Try the totally gluten free diet for several months and see if you see improvement in your health. A positive dietary response is a diagnosis in itself. Many people here are self-diagnosed and feel very comfortable with it.

    2. Continue to eat gluten and go for the blood test and perhaps and endoscopy. Both test can be inconclusive. They can rule celiac in, but they cannot rule it out.

I would think that you might want to resolve this before school starts so you know which direction to go.

The diet may seem overwhelming in the beginning, but it is very doable. The reward for diligence is a future without pain or unwelcome irreversible complications.

    Hope this was helpful.

  10. Hello everyone,

I'm newly diagnosed officially as of this morning. I had positive bloodwork a few weeks back so I did buy some gluten free stuff and started preparing so I could go on the diet after my endo test today.

Anyway, even though I felt pretty well prepared I just need to double check a couple things I've eaten today.

Is all orange juice gluten free, they gave me that at the hospital and I assumed it would be ok but am not positive?

Also, I had Sharp Cheddar Cheese and the Ingredients are:

Pasteurized milk, cheese culture, salt, and enzymes. I'm not sure about the enzymes.

Thanks in advance, I really want to get off to a good start and just need some additional help and support!

    Joni

    An official welcome!

Not all juices are gluten free. You have to look for 100% juice and it is always good to read the labels.

The cheddar cheese should be go to go, but as you may have read from others, dairy is often hard to digest in the beginning. Try going dairy light until some healing can begin.

If you have any other questions, always feel free.

  11. DD has been gluten-free since May and only a few glutenings since then. Most of her symptoms before were non-GI related and mostly behavior related and leg pains. Going gluten-free has taken care of most of this.

    Until this week.

She has complained of her legs feeling tingly and in pain, as though her legs had "fallen asleep" a lot of the time.

She has had a bit of a cold with headache and ear pain, but we just treated it with Jr. Tylenol Meltaways (grape) and Children's Sudafed liquid and that part seems to be doing better today.

Has anyone's kiddo experienced "tingly legs" even after being gluten-free with no recent "glutenings"?

I keep thinking perhaps the table where she eats lunch at day camp is contaminated from the person who ate there before (or any number of surfaces she touches away from home w/ gluten) and maybe isn't being as good a hand-washer as she could be and is getting CCd that way. No gastro symptoms, but could be enough to trigger tingly legs. I dunno. That is just a mom's guess of course!

Doll had some very good answers. I am having the same symptoms currently. Is you daughter very thin, with little padding on her legs and bottom. This is me. When I sit for a short period of time of cross my legs, I get the "falling asleep" feeling. It is a nerve problem and in my case some weight gain will help me.

  12. All of Newman's are gluten free EXCEPT, Family Italian. Kraft will always list. Hidden Valley in the bottle, at last check was not gluten free.

...."at last check" may have been a year ago when there WAS concern about the Vinegar. I would love to use Hidden Vally. I always considered it the best.

  13. Hi

We are a ranch dressing home. We like Annie's, but I need something that is more readily available. Does anyone know about Kraft, Hidden Valley, Wishbone, Newman's Own, etc...

    Thanks!! :D

All of Newman's are gluten free EXCEPT, Family Italian. Kraft will always list. Hidden Valley in the bottle, at last check was not gluten free.

  14. Hello everyone. I have, what I consider, a huge problem. I am not sure if it is related to celiac disease or not..but I am hoping that possibly someone on this site has experienced this or can lead me in the right direction.

Some background information...I am 28 yrs old, have a 9 month old daughter. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2005 and on the gluten free diet. I am currently living with my daughter, husband and his parents. For the last year, I have been experiencing memory loss. Mostly short term. I will meet someone and if they would walk back into the room, I wouldn't remember their name. I may remember their face. When someone speaks to me, I find it really hard to focus and usually forget what they say immediately. For example, my boss will tell me to do something...and I immediately forget to do it. Even forgetting to write it down! This has caused me some embarrassment when he asked if I had completed a task and I have to tell him I forgot about it.

I am constantly forgetting where I have placed items...keys, cell phone, papers...etc.... It even affects my ability to speak...words I once used constantly I can't remember or pronounce correctly. My spelling has not been up to par either. For me to write this email takes tremendous thought.

I am just at a loss as to who to call....a neurologist, gastro, family physician?? Plus, I have no idea what the heck is happening to me. I first chalked it up to having a baby...however, my baby has slept through the night since she was four months old and I am even worse!

Any thoughts? Advice??? Thanks so much!

What described is very typical of "brain for". In the beginning I had symptoms such as that included some gait problems and speech problems.. B-12 injection helped a lot.

Perhaps some blood work might indicate some vitamin or mineral defences that attributes to your problem.

I also assume that you are not living in a totally free of gluten household. You could be experiencing some major cross-contamination issues, such as shared pots and pans, wooden spoons....

  15. Vincent,

So glad that that red-headed cuties is doing so well.

I just wanted to add somethings that I have read on these posts.

Several adults have posted that they were diagnosed with Celiac as a child and then it went "silent", only to reoccur in adulthood.

I have not come across any studies regarding this, though. I do hope that this is not the case for Timmy and that the Cherios may be your answer.

    Keep us posted.

    Lisa
