  1. Are they really not gluten-free? If you have read my previous post you know I am not 100% sure I have a gluten problem, but when I read this I just about fell over......

Every time I went to the doctor with my symptoms they would ask "have you tried tums" and I would always say "yes, but I swear it makes it worse" and then they would look at me like I was nuts.

If Tums really do have Gluten in them I am feeling more confident by the minute!!!!! Thank you for posting this!!!

    :D I love light-bulb moments!

  2. I am so sorry that you are frustrated. I know all too well how hard celiac can be.

I don't think that you can find any professional that has the combined knowledge of the people on this site.

You are a part of the family. Venting or not, if you need some guidance or have questions, we're here!!

  3. Hi. I'm new here, but have been mostly gluten free for 5 years now.

My question is, when I was tested (blood test) for celiac disease (at age 13), I had not been eating any wheat for several weeks prior to. I didn't realize at the time that that made a difference. My symptoms were rather mild and I was only tested because my dad had tested positive. So my parents decided it was best for me to stay gluten free. So fast forward to just recently, I local restaurant got in a new item, which I checked out and loved. It had modified food starch. I never got sick and I ate the several times before I remembered to check out the MFS further. Turns out it was Wheat. So, being the adventurous 18 year old I am, I started eating other things with wheat in them. I'm feeling fine! no symptoms at all. I've started eating a tiny bit daily the last few weeks and I can't notice any difference.

So what I'm getting at is- should I be retested? or just eat as long as I don't go overboard?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Brittany, may I call you that.?

You tested positive for Celiac, which mean that you cannot have wheat, barley, rye, malt and selective oats. Being diagnosed with Celiac is a bit complex. You might overload and get hit hard by gluten symptoms and it might build up and may be dibiliatory at some time.

Perhaps you doctor caught this early and you have few symptoms. But this will be with you for life. Even if you do not have symptoms, you could still be doing damage to your intestines. Some here have silent symptoms, but that damage still continues.

If you are diagnosed with Celiac, please read as much as you can from this site. It is the best source for information that you can find. We are a good group of folks and are wiling for afford you any information that you need. Ask away.

Regarding Modified Food Starch in the US if it is derived for wheat, by law it would be included in the labeling statement on the ingredients.

    Welcome to Celiac land.

  4. Wayne,

I just checked on a 2007 list and it was not included. But that does not indicate that is is not gluten free. I take Prilosec OTC and Omepresol (sp)- scrip. Mylanta, is in my fridge. I cannot insure that it is gluten free, but it would not been in there if at some time I realized that it was not good to go.

I have lost my ability to "know" products, I now rely on labeling. But, I have to admit, make-up, shampoos, lipstick, lotions are hard to decipher.

    Hope you feel better.

  5. After a while you learn to adapt. I have plenty of gluten free sweets when I choose. I cook better than I did. And the reward is better health. Restaurants are getting easier because of the continued awareness.

Dinner invitations have dwingled. But then, those who don't want to inquire about my diet or ask a few questions, it may not be the place I would like to go - for friendship or food.

YES, it is a lifestyle change. YES, it sucks at times. YES, it's a pain in the butt, as well as some people. But it's an important aspect of my life. I will not spend the future years sick. I have too much to do.

  6. Hi, my allergist just told me the other day that in the USA MSG is either wheat-based or beet-based. So other than the MSG issues generally, you might want to be sure of the source of the MSG.

Although MSG may not be good for you and some people do react adversely to it, it is not gluten related, in the US.

  7. It would be a place to start...

even better would be a list online that gets updated with new information!

I have the Triumph Dining Guide and it is very helpful when I leave town. If you would like to PM me the city where you daughter lives - I can send you come recommendations and contact numbers.

  8. I totally understand as I am sure most of us can. I remember walking down the grocery isles and feeling so angry! And I agree, I HATE FOOD COMMERCIALS. Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Pizza Hut are the worst for me.

May of us go through a mourning stage and it is very natural. Once you get the hang of the diet and can read labels well your frustration will subside. It does get better.

  9. Not sure if the offer is still valid almost two years later, but we just found out my daughter has celiac disease, and the list that was offered would be incredibly helpful. I sent my email address to celiac3270 - if anyone else has it and would send it that would be great too...

PS This is a great resource. I'm starting to feel a little less overwhelmed by it all already!

Although convenient, I would be vary wary of a two year old list of any kind.

  10. Thank you for your replies. My symptoms appear to be mild. I will watch it closely and consult with my doctor.

Yes, stress can do a number on you and it's coming at me from all directions. :(

I appreciate your thoughts and a special thanks to those that PM'd me.
