  1. Was just curious. I've been posting nothing but gluten related stuff on here and I guess I was wondering if there is anyone else here from my home province in Canada? I'm now living in the tri-state region but I was born and raised in Newfoundland up until 2009. :DB)

A member here, CanadianKaren, has deep roots in Lawn, Newfoundland.

  2. No. I thought it was interesting and a cute commercial. I figure it would spark a discussion but it's a holiday weekend in the US, so maybe not.

It was aired here and it caught my attention, and a quick dismiss. It was very generic. But gluten free was a used word.

Dow might be a larger monster to jump on. And I'm not too sure what their input is....yet?

  3. Thanks Lisa-very informative article. If they could detect damage after 50mg on the average person, then 4 slices of bread seems overkill. I guess they just want to make sure like the other person says. The support group leader told me that "I pumped my son full of it so the damage would be evident and we wouldn't have to keep doing this (biopsies)." I guess that makes sense. On a second point to that article...I hope they don't lower the standards now to below 20ppm. It seems like they'd just quit making gluten free food if they make regulations that tight. I had never thought of that.

:) Progress is good. As slow as it seems, I'm pleased.

  4. No one offended me. I don't mean for it to sound that way. I am just trying to put what the doctors are telling me and what people here are saying and sometimes they don't match. The endo tested her for celiacs at 7 and it was negative and they told me she was fine. I didn't change her diet. Maybe it makes me feel guilty that I didn't when you guys say that she did have celiac first. I had never even heard the term before and when the test came back negative, I thought we were home free. I do carry a lot of guilt around about everything!

My daughters GI doctor looked straight at my husband and said "Get tested immediatly." He has zero of the normal celiac issues but he got tested his Ttg was 3. (normal) Mine was 2. Not one single sign of celiac in our blood. But, we both carry the genes. He is DQ2 and DQ8 and I know I have at least one DQ2 because our other daughter is double DQ2. We know that at anytime, we could become celiac. And my daughter shares the "DQ2 and DQ8" which is linked to late onset type 1 diabetes. DH got it at 18. So we will always have to watch for that. I am hoping that gluten free will make that not show up! I feel like I am constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.

  5. Victoria and Mindy are 100% correct ....as of 2008 Celiac is considered a disability. There was an article fairly recent on this forum about Pizza Hut having charges brought against them by a mother who brought a school group to the restaurant and a child brought in ....I think...MacDonald's fries. They were asked to leave.

I seldom eat out because of my many food issues...there are 2 restaurants where I go and order a salad with safe ingredients, and I bring my own salad dressing. I can also order spring rolls at another restaurant and bring my own soyless soy sauce. No one has ever objected, and I've never been asked to leave.I would never create a scene, I would simply state the facts if I had to, and continue to eat.

The article appeared Jan. 20,2012...google Pizza Hut Gluten Free child asked to leave....sorry, I'm not sure how to insert the link.

  6. I'm on day 26 of being gluten free and I'm still having headaches everyday. They are the kind that don't go away, even with excedrine which always works for me. Our bodies are detoxing trying to get all of the poison out of us and some people get worse before they are better. I sure hope these headaches stop soon though. I am happy to say my GERD has gone away and my BMs are what most people probably consider "normal"! Yay for that! :)

I only keep Aleve in my house, but here is a list:

    Aleve works for me.

  7. It's recommended that it would take six to eight weeks, or more of a full gluten diet to test positive. So it would not be unusual for you to consume gluten for several weeks for you to get a reaction.

After healing, it might take time to break it all down, to be symptomatic.

    ....just my thoughts.

  8. we live in a small apartment without a dishwasher. I mentioned to hubby that we should buy a portable apartment dishwasher (we had one a long time ago) but he said absolutley not, we cant afford it

What should I do? Am I destined to be sick forever? The whole family going gluten-free is also out of the question..how do I clean everything, kee gluten-free sponges..help...:(

A dish washer won't clean your dishes any better than you would. That's okay gluten is a crumb on your plate, it's not a bacteria.

Breath deeply, and then take small steps. Walk around this place and you will learn lots. ;)

  9. I'm new to Celiac (officially diagnosed last week) and I'm wondering if there's any kind of card or doctor's note I could get that would allow me to take my own safe food into places where they ordinarily do not allow it and would expect you to buy their gluten-filled items. I'm thinking of places like concerts, theme parks, convention centers, perhaps airports or government buildings, etc. Thanks :)

I have not heard of one. I think that you may need a doctors note to get past the security at airport, but things may have changed.

Check out Triumph Dining Cards @www.triumphdining.com It's not an acccess card but it does contain some information.

  10. Hi, All.

I am new to everything gluten free. I have to see a specialist in order to even be diagnosed, but my gastroenterologist said I should try going gluten free in the meantime to see if my symptoms improve. I have been pretty strict for a week now, but now I'm ready to start making my own breads/cakes, etc...

I know there are many commercial mixes out there, but I'm starting off with trying to cook from scratch. I purchased some gluten-free all-purp flour (Bob's) and some xanthan gum. In most recipes, would you suggest adding the gum to the gluten-free flour? I have yet to eat anything gluten-free but some Glutino pretzels which I think I like more than my favorite wheat pretzels so I'm trying to be optimistic. Also, is there a good, low carb sandwich recipe you could share with me (or direct me to?)

    Thanks!

    Hello and Welcome!

It's recommended not to go gluten free until all your testing is finished. Your gastro person should know that.

  11. Having just been diagnosed a couple months ago I'm not really caught up on all the issues surrounding the labeling of gluten free. I know it would be great to get some standards though and this man has employed an interesting tactic to try to get things done

Mods please move if I posted on the wrong board.

Hum..Orrin Hatch - a name out of my professional past, whoa. On the subject, I don't know if that will be helpful or not. But change moves slowly in the government.

I think work through the lobby organizations are dealing with the issue as best they can, without pop-up law suits. Just my humble opinion.

  12. Yeah, I bought cashews there too.

It doesn't say anything on the package of cashews.

But that doesn't mean anything really.

They just didn't have the money to put a fancy label on them.

Where do y'all get your nuts??

I used to get them at Nuts.com

But I can't afford the shipping right now.

I got Diamond walnuts in the shell.

Even that bag has processed in a facility that also processes wheat.

Sheesh~ What's a Paleo girl to do??? Go without nuts??? Or go nuts after I eat them and have a reaction....decisions...decisions.... hmmm.

But seriously are there any certified gluten free nuts???

I know I have heard of several sensitive members who eat almonds. Hopefully, they will check in.
