No, it's not well understood in the mass media, that's for certain.
The Today show did a great segment with Joy Baurer, to correct the misinformation from Dr. Nancy Snyderman, just a week earlier. It's a slow crawl forward though.
I think what gets attention is "the gluten free DIET", which lumps it in with the vastness or weight loss diets. Or perhaps the diet du jour.
Gluten free products generate a great deal of sales. So someone is listening, regardless of the need.

Be sure to read the section on CC (cross contamination) because that is what usually trips us up.
Toaster, wooden cutting boards, plastic colanders--have to go.
let us know what else we can do!
Best wishes.
Keep me posted on your progress!

Super list IH! I expect hundreds will enjoy it.

I just wanted to get this off my chest:
I am kind of irritated and fed up with articles that begin "you can't avoid seeing all that gluten free food around--what is it?" or "with all the publicity it is getting, all those Hollywood starts trying out the gluten free diet, what is it?"
First off--I wish there were gluten-free food everywhere. But 99% of the restaurants I try in the Bay Area are clueless; yes they have improved, but, at least where I live, the apparent "hype" has not hit home. Even restaurants I read about online as being gluten-aware end up not having a clue once I get there.
Second--labeling of food in groceries still sucks. I still have to read the small print on my roasted chicken to make sure it is gluten-free (having to turn the damn thing upside down in the process), I still have to pick up and read most products carefully.
Third--who the hell are all these Hollywood stars?
It seems to me the actual hype is not so much about the extent of gluten-related conditions, as about the actual knowledge and availability of products.
There, I feel a little better.
Sorry that you feel the need to vent, but it looks like you have it pretty good. Below is a link to restaurants in your area which are gluten friendly. You have more options than most.

I have been gluten free since 2004, and I have seen tremendous progress in products and awareness. And, I'm tremendously grateful.

That's a good reminder to stay vigilant! I catch myself "assuming" a bit too much at times.
Glad you made a quick recovery richard.

Tell me more about the artist, writer and healer in you. I'm sure that much of that can be healing in itself to you, as well.
Could work be an issue for you? You mentioned dry wall and construction material?

Bea, I am sorry for your struggles. And, I have no answers for you. But, I can see that you have made a difficult choice between your health and your visits with your 97 year old mother.
Your time with your mother, certainly is limited at her age. Perhaps you could use a mask and visit with more frequency.
Regrets can't be undone.
(I lost my parents at a very early age.)
And maybe a clinician can be helpful in coping with your severe issues. I can only assume it's quite a struggle.

Looks like I might need some hypertension meds. How are they tolerated and which are confirmed gluten free?
Thanks

I got a response back from Joy!
Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for your note. I am thrilled to hear that you and the team at Celiac.com found my "Gluten Confusion" segment accurate and informative. Your positive feedback is much appreciated. And thank you for all you do to educate your audience about celiac and gluten and clear up misconceptions.
In good health,
Joy

Where is that gal who sent me a link about Asia growing wheat and rice in the same fields....
scary stuff, if you ask me. This will be the 1st year I try growing my own oats, I have a
huge garden. Not on my Paleo list but hey, I HAVE to have a cookie now & then!
I will go look for that link.
Wheat and rice cannot be grown successfully in the same conditions. Whoever sent you that link, was very wrong!

I was reading about the Catholic host controversy; what's with that anyway? The Bible doesn't say in the original Hebrew or Aramaic that the grain used in the unleavened bread was necessarily wheat. Such a fuss.
Yes, such a fuss.

Yes, some people just don't seem to know what to do with us.
I entertain a lot. Everything I serve is gluten free, although sometimes my southern husband insists on gluten french bread on the table. Eventually, I guilt them into inviting me to their home
. Only a few close friends even remember my intolerance. But, I always enjoy the company and eat whatever I'm able too. Generally, I don't go home hungry. And wine always works.
After you give it some time you will find a comfortable place among better friends.
We all understand.

I agree with Peter, but watch out for some wine coolers.
And welcome...you've found a great place for information.

There are some real wacko's posting on her FB page. What a shame... people can be so rude! Disagree with her, but people should do it respectfully.
But, I must say, those that posted regarding her segment on Celiac, all were respectful! Good Job Dani!
I was pleased they did a BETTER segment with Joy Bauer (a week later). I think our peeps were successful. I thought she did a great job!

I had a "weakly positive" blood test in December, and a negative biopsy in January. Before the biopsy, I went 3 weeks on gluten, and I felt absolutely awful. I have been off gluten for a month, and still feel bloated, some diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. The GI doc said the biopsy is the gold standard, so I probably don't have celiac, given the weak blood test result. I'm not sure what test it was. He suggests maybe I have lactose intolerance or fructose intolerance as well as gluten intolerance. He said to go off milk etc for a couple weeks and see if it helps. I'm at a loss now, as I don't want to keep guessing what the problem is after 5 months of discomfort! I also have had, for a good 10 years a rash on my chest that I suspect maybe DH.
So, can I safely rule out Celiac disease, and it is just an intolerance, combined with possible other in tolerances? Can I have other tests? He just wanted me to try the lactose thing and see how it goes.
How many samples were taken to biopsy? After your weak positive, it might not have been enough time to create significant damage, or affected areas might have been missed.
My suggestion would be to eliminate dairy products for three or four weeks, continue to eat gluten free...and I'd be willing to bet that you will see a vast improvement.
Positive blood work and positive dietary response is a diagnosis. And the current trend is to have multiple indicators in a diagnosis

Oh and it was "Modified Food Starch" on the waters label that I was concerned about to begin with. I know that if the starch contains Wheat, then it must be stated in parenthesis, but I don't think that applies to Rye or Barley, so it's tricky.
Rye or Barley would not be a component in Modified Food Starch. In the US, MFS is generally derived from corn.

Hello, anyone know if royal umbrella rice brand is gluten free? this is from asia thanks
Even though import standards should be in compliance with US laws (regarding labeling for the eight allergies), originating from China, I would not assume safety.
Yet, this is an international board...and I don't know where you reside.

I have a great picture of Tom, Metta, Chris and myself in Scottsdale several years ago on MY FB Page. Tom, go see.

Everyone responds to a gluten free product differently. That's why it's so hard for you to get a firm answer.
With no gluten ingredients, I would give it a go. But, that's me.
-
Since we all jumped on them last time, maybe we should drop them a thank you line for getting it right this time. Nothing like a little positive reinforcem
Yes! Without a doubt!

It might be best to begin a new topic. The OP has kinda wrapped it up, I believe.

Yes, that does happen from time to time. But you must realize that everyone has different sensitivity levels. Just because someone has an issue with a "gluten free" product, does not mean that others will. You must find you own safety level.
