  1. Can anyone tell me if Bibo Orange punch is gluten-free? The only suspicious thing is "natural flavour", which I hope would be from the orange juice used to make the punch. Also, it's made by Minute Maid, and I think all Minute Maid (Coke) products are gluten-free. Can my 6 year old drink it?
  2. Oh good. I thought for sure that my post would be sent over to the "most annoying comments" thread. Yeah, a lady gave me a great recipe for everything I'm allergic to.
  3. The Calgary Celiac Association newsletter (end of 2005) says that the Oriental Palace restaurant in Parkdale (pretty much down the hill from Foothills, I think) has a selection of recipes that can be converted to gluten-free. The article says it's: Oriental Palace Peking Cuisine, Fully Licensed 9 Parkdale Cres. N.W. * 283-5564 *Parkdale Crescent is...
  4. Armetta, try try this recipe for fish batter. I had a craving one day, and since my son is gluten-free, I had to research it, and found this. I've made it twice and we love it. And, for what it's worth, my sister tried it with all-purpose flour and didn't like it. I guess the trick is the sweet rice flour. I hope you can have corn and rice. Fish Batter...
  5. (unless you think that's annoying!) As for the rest of you, it's ICING, not frosting and you can make it with butter, icing sugar, vanilla, and milk. If you make enough, you can have a big, big bowl all to yourself, and not some puny little can. My MIL used to go home from school (before she quit at age 15--different times Jackie and celiac3270! NO dropping...
  6. My son was diagnosed by positive bloodwork and positive biopsy. I cannot say that there has been a positive dietary response. He has gained 2 lbs in the last five months and seems a bit happier, but certainly still has crazy mood swings (occasionally brought on by having a big brother who likes to push his buttons). He had no "obvious" symptoms from consuming...
  7. What do you mean by "hyper floaters"? Do you mean something that looks like transluscent grey amoeba-like thingys that float around your eyes? And when you look quickly in another direction by moving only your eyes, they follow? Sorry for the weird description, that's the only way I can describe it.
  8. My youngest son has Celiac. My husband, older son and I have been tested. My Mom was tested. We four are negative. No one else has been tested. I imagine it's because they have no symptoms, and I haven't really reminded them (with the exception of my sister) that Ty didn't have any symptoms either. In fact, other than my Mom & sister, none of our extended...
  9. You're German...Oktoberfest. All Germans must love beer and bratwurst (or whatever), just as all Canadians must be polite, etc. And I'm sorry (oops, I'm Canadian, I have to apologize) but I can't think of any other vast generalizations based on heritage. Q. How do you get a Canadian to apologize? A. Step on his toes.
  10. My younger son has Celiac. My husband, older son and I don't have any autoimmune diseases (that we are aware of...we've all been tested for celiac). Neither my Mom, Dad, brother or sister have any autoimmune diseases. My Mom's Mom and Grandfather had thyroid problems. Most of my maternal grandfather's brothers and sisters had diabetes (not sure what kind...
  11. Hmm. I'm not really sure, since my son was almost six when he was diagnosed, and pretty much asymptomatic. I do know that there are a couple of good Gluten-free Casein-free websites out there that may have more info, but I'm not sure if they have forums or not. Just google Gluten-free Casein-free diet and see what happens. One might be called Gluten-free...
  12. Hi Carrie, The worcestershire sauce turned out pretty well. It was a bit stinky (boiling vinegar blech!), but my husband eventually asked what the recipe was, he knew he'd had it a long time ago but couldn't pinpoint the taste. I told him it was Steak Diane and that I'd had to make the worcestershire sauce and wasn't sure how it would taste and...
  13. I've made this a couple of times and it turns out really well. I liked it better with the flour blend below; with the Bette Hagman featherlight mix I thought it was a bit gritty or grainy tasting. My little fella will be taking one of these cupcakes with him on Sunday to a friend's birthday. I should note that my in-laws didn't know it was gluten-free when...
  14. To Carrie and all other Canadians looking for a gluten-free worcestershire sauce. I found this link today. It has three recipes for homemade gluten-free worcestershire sauce. Open Original Shared Link I'm going to make the second one (less authentic tasting, but easy to make) today so we can have Steak Diane tonight. All this work for 1 tsp...
  15. Sun-rype Energy to Go fruit bars are gluten-free.
  16. I make chicken fried rice from scratch all the time. It's best to use day old rice and contrary to all the recipes, don't used pre-cooked chicken, use fresh chicken, dark meat (legs or thighs) is supposed to be better. For one big batch you will need: a big bowl of cooked rice 2 green onions 1 egg a couple of tablespoons of green beans, peas or whatever...
  17. Weird. I was at Walmart picking up some M&M's and looked at the Snickers fun size, because for some reason I thought that NO Snickers in Canada were gluten-free and oddly enough, I couldn't find anything suspicious on the fun size snickers. Of course, it's perfectly possible and even probable, that the second ingredient was wheat flour and I just didn...
  18. Oh yeah, Nisla's comment about being underweight and undertall reminded me. Ty was usually about 5% on the chart for weight and about 25% for height. He was following a growth curve of his own, not one that fit into the charts. He was 7lbs 2oz at birth and then slowed down from there. I'm not sure when the Celiac was "triggered"; he always had normal diapers...
  19. My son was diagnosed August 2005. The only reason we found out, is because the previous November we had his iron levels checked, because since he started kindergarten, he was falling asleep at the supper table every day. His iron (which is measured in a unit I don't remember) should have been between 10-110. It was 3. He was put on liquid iron and a month...
  20. Carrie, I'm in Canada also and have noticed the same thing. Ever since I read the first few posts here about the Staxx saying gluten-free on the label I've checked and have never seen that. Also, the plain Staxx seem to have a long list of ingredients, but the regular (classic or plain wavy) chips just have "specially selected potatoes", salt and oil of...
  21. A couple of weeks ago, I took Ty over to his friend's house and was explaining to the dad that Ty has Celiac, and what not to feed him for a snack or whatever, and he interrupted and said, wait, I'll get the nanny, so I was explaining to them not to give him anything with wheat, rye, oats or barley in it, and the nanny said, "Can he have cookies?". In her...
  22. I called Colgate-Palmolive in Canada, and the rep said that EVERYTHiNG manufactured by them (dental products, soap, laundry detergent, dish soap) is gluten-free. I'm not sure where you're from, but Ehrin makes a good point: call the 800 # and ask about all their products.
  23. Carrie, I want that recipe! Is it easy, and do they freeze well? I haven't had any chicken fajitas since August because: 1. Ty can't have soft taco shells--he doesn't like the corn ones (too bad, because there's a place in town where we can get 90 for about $5. Freshly made.) 2. The kids don't like them. But too bad...if I have a good gluten-free soft...
  24. Can you get Maple Leaf Top Dog hot dogs? I can't remember if you're from Idaho, or Montana, but very close to the Canadian border, right? These are really good. But perhaps, "Only in Canada, eh?" I don't know if they are available in the States.
  25. The following is an email from Cineplex Odeon Theatres (Canada) in response to my question about the "natural flavours and spices" on the ingredient list on the bag of popcorn salt. There was no allergy info provided with the salt. The young man at the concession was great, got me the allergy info for the butter and topping and when he couldn't find an info...
