ARCHIVED This Is Starting To Scare Me
2Boys4Me replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh Chrissy, I'm so sorry to hear that. Is she depressed about the diet, or that she's not gaining any weight? I can't remember if she goes to school or is homeschooled. Are the kids at school giving her a hard time? Are there any other dietary concerns - lactose or casein? I don't know how to ask delicately, but is she eating much? Does she just need to... -
ARCHIVED Question About Old El Pasco?
2Boys4Me replied to Ronnie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We use Old El Paso hard (corn) taco shells and the seasoning packet (powder, add water and ground beef) all the time. The company (Gen Mills?) said they always clearly label gluten as wheat, rye, oats, barley/malt. Were they soft tacos? If so, there's your answer. I don't think Old El Paso makes soft tortillas that aren't flour. Not sure about the salsa sauce... -
ARCHIVED Question For The Expert Bakers
2Boys4Me replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hmmm. I wish I knew. I look forward to the answer. I made chocolate chip muffins one time and the bottoms were pretty good because all the chocolate chips sank. The tops tasted kind of blah. The problem I have with muffins is that when I pour the batter into the tins they look fine, but while they're cooking weird things happen and they come out all weirdly... -
Dr. Corrie Materie, author of "No Wheat...No Problem!" lives in Cochrane. She's a chiropractor. Maybe you could call her office and make an appointment to talk Celiac and where to get food in Cochrane. If you're up front about the appointment being about Celiac and not an adjustment...who knows? Below is a link to a pdf info booklet about her. Open Original...

ARCHIVED Soccer Season
2Boys4Me replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks Everyone. We did get hold of the nut & mold allergy parent today and there was nothing mentioned about any dietary restriction other than nut free. I still think I will send out a note with the list of whose turn it is regarding the nuts/gluten, but in all liklihood I will bring a snack for Ty myself, just in case, because while people are... -
ARCHIVED Bday Parties
2Boys4Me replied to jaimi alderson's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This gluten-free Wacky cake is pretty good. I use the Carol Fenster sorghum/corn flour blend and it doesn't taste gritty at all. Can't remember how long to cook for cupcakes, though. Wacky Cake Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups Bette Hagman flour mixture or acceptable gluten free flour mixture 1 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 1 cup sugar 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa 1 tsp... -
Hi All, Soccer season is just around the corner. We got the team list last night and on the team we have one Celiac (mine) and one who's allergic to nuts and mold. I don't know anything about mold allergies. Would he be able to eat yogurt? I want to send out a list to the parents with suggestions for their turns for snacks. I was thinking of: fruit...

ARCHIVED Trix Not Gluten-free
2Boys4Me replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I thought Cap'n Crunch had oat flour. It does in Canada. Everytime I go to the grocery I check corn and rice based cereals and they always have malt or oat flour in them. -
ARCHIVED M&m Meats, Canada
2Boys4Me replied to Rusla's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Did you call or email the head office? You should let them know that they could be doing some real damage to people unless they get an accurate list. -
I use Koon Yick Wah Kee ( ). I got it at a local Chinese market. Lee Kum Kee Choy Sun Oyster Flavored Sauce is gluten free, but I still have lots of the other stuff, but will probably be getting the Lee Kum Kee next time. The first kind is imported from China, but CFIA checked for me and it's gluten-free. I got an email from Lee Kum Kee, but since I...

Hi Betty, here it is...I got this from a Chinese cooking class I took a long time ago before I had kids. I love it, my husband loves it...and the KIDS love it, too. Tastes just like restaurant Beef & Broccoli. Beef & Broccoli Tips: Use chicken stock instead of beef stock - it has more flavour. If you stirfry the vegetables first, you don't...

ARCHIVED Kindersurprise
2Boys4Me replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, Guys. Why did I put this in the coping with forum? Oh well, chocolate helps little boys cope too, I suppose. -
ARCHIVED Taking Kids To The Doctor On Friday
2Boys4Me replied to prinsessa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Tell the doctor that you had inconclusive blood results but a positive dietary response, and that you'd like them tested. If the doctor tests for anemia, and they have low iron, get the Celiac blood panel done. Very low iron was my son's symptom. No GI issues at all. -

ARCHIVED Kindersurprise
2Boys4Me posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't find a phone # for Kindersurprise, tried emailing from the website and I don't think it worked. They're gluten-free, right? There's nothing at all suspicious in the ingredients, I just want to double check in case the Easter Bunny drops off a Kindersurprise Maxi in a couple of weeks. -
ARCHIVED Ignorant Server Of The Day
2Boys4Me replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My older gluten-eating son had a hockey wrap up party at the Winter Club in Calgary. They were having hot dogs and fries and making their own sundaes. Since the party was only an hour and a half, we figured we'd eat at the cafeteria there, and then go watch the trophy presentation, etc. We brought our own hot dog and bun for Ty and my husband and I bought... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
2Boys4Me replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lie to your friends, Radman. Tell them it's contagious and soon THEY won't be able to drink beer either because you've infected them. That'll shut them up and you can have all the rum/vodka/tequila/jack daniels/whatever you want with no repercussions. Then you can sit there drinking your drink with your little secret smile and watch them freak out. -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Corn!
2Boys4Me replied to coldandhardy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If it's not table salt it could be something in the "flavouring" salt. -
ARCHIVED Gross Allergy/intolerance Stories From Waiters/waitresses?
2Boys4Me replied to gabby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Make an icky face and tell them now you have to have it "to go". Sorry, no real suggestions, we don't go out much...our gluten-free son is rather "selective", so we have only two restaurants we go to and they don't say anything. -
ARCHIVED 2 Yr. Old With Celiac?
2Boys4Me replied to happy4dolphins's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son (diagnosed at 5 1/2) was always skinny, but with a tiny pot belly (not big like malnourished African babies) and other than that...extremely low iron levels which we discovered at age five. He never ever complained of a stomach ache. Looking back he never ate bread, but did eat buns and tons of pasta and pizza. No vomiting, no diarrhea, no constipation... -
Never heard of it. Probably not available in the Great White North. (Well, Brown North)

ARCHIVED Going To A Wedding, Is This Tacky?
2Boys4Me replied to skoki-mom's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ditto. And it is absolutely NOT tacky...it's your health. -
I have a good recipe for Beef & Broccoli if you're interested. The trick is finding gluten-free Oyster sauce. Of course, you'd have to cook it as well, not as fun as going out.

ARCHIVED Do I Test My Kids?
2Boys4Me replied to jaimi alderson's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We didn't go to ACH, just the nearest Calgary Lab Services where it took 2 people (me and a nurse) to hold him still and another one to get the blood. Ty had a follow-up last month and then next March we'll go to the new "lego" ACH. Have you had our follow-up endoscopy? I've read a few posts where you intend to.
