ARCHIVED New Celiac Mom
cyclinglady replied to Marcindy3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
May I suggest not giving her toast? I know that the BRAT diet was recommended in the past, but I am not so sure that it is a good thing. Plain whole foods, nothing processed. Like mashed sweet potatoes, veggies, stewed meats, broth, soups, fruit, things that are easy-to-digest (think mushy, think crockpot tender). Bananas or even applesauce is good... -
ARCHIVED How to handle eight year old daughter pre-diagnosis
cyclinglady replied to aliciahere's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you already have the actual referral and appointment with the GI, can you call the office ask if there are any cancellations? This has worked for many waiting in diagnostic limbo land! -
ARCHIVED How to handle eight year old daughter pre-diagnosis
cyclinglady replied to aliciahere's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! My heart goes out to you! My own kid (15) has tested negative, but with each tummy ache, I worry a little. ? i think that the equivalent of 1 slice of bread should be enough until that Ped GI consult, but can your GP order an entire celiac panel? That might give you a clearer picture sooner as kids often test better on the DGP. I would... -
ARCHIVED It's beginning to look a lot like DH...
cyclinglady replied to stephm's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Going gluten free for a few weeks will not do the trick. It can take weeks or months before getting good results. So, your mom is wrong about that. (I hope you are reading.....you best bet is to become very informed!) Welcome to the forum!- 4 replies

ARCHIVED It's beginning to look a lot like DH...
cyclinglady replied to stephm's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Noooooo! I do not have DH (celiac rash) but I urge you to read the DH section. Steroids can mess up biopsies and I am not sure about the celiac blood tests. Often blood tests are negative in those that present with DH. Your Derm would have to know how to biopsy the celiac rash. I hope others chime in fast. In the meantime......read!- 4 replies

ARCHIVED Are these all celiac symptoms?
cyclinglady replied to oli97's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You do have an injury -- your gut! Just give yourself time to heal and be sure you are eating a healthy diet of proteins, fats and a wide array of veggies and fruit. (This is from a person with b12 levels over 2,000 who still experiences tingles and aches when exposed to gluten and I take no supplements.) -
ARCHIVED Help understanding bloodwork results.
cyclinglady replied to Lacie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Only you can make that decision whether you should go gluten free. However, you should NOT go gluten free prior to your endoscopy or you can get negative results. Celiac disease must be active for all testing! You have had two positives on the panel. Your doctor was wise to order the endoscopy. Just make sure he takes at least four tissue samples... -
ARCHIVED Pre-Celiac? help w results
cyclinglady replied to tribny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am sorry that you are in "Limbo Land!" Hard to say, from my own personal experience, I only test postive to the DGP. What were your DGP results? Negative? Are you IGA deficient? Any other AI disorders? Besides the GERD, any other symptoms not GI related like anemia? I suppose you could continue to consume gluten until you develop symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Substitutions from old recipes
cyclinglady replied to TracyButler's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
For cakes and cookies, I like Pamela's all-purpose gluten-free flour. It does not contain Xanthan gum which bothers me (personal food intolerance). I can use the old Toll-House chocolate chip cookie recipe and any of my cake recipes, but I tend to use a little less flour depending on egg size. I know, hard to gauge, but if you were a baker before you were... -
ARCHIVED Gas-X
cyclinglady replied to BDD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No comment on the Gas-Ex, but what is the root cause of the gas (celiac disease, a food Intolerance)? Solve that and you will not need a drug to eliminate symptoms. Just my opinion and I am not a doctor! -

ARCHIVED Celiac or not?
cyclinglady replied to Rachel171's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Guess what? My kid is 15 and I can no longer access her records even though she signed a waiver/authorization form two years ago for the patient portal. Had to get her recent lab results via snail mail. No time to deal with the portal. Geez, we pay the bills but it is the law!- 7 replies

ARCHIVED caution: good belly juice NOT gluten-free.
cyclinglady replied to ironictruth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Was that certified gluten-free whey protein? Did you contact the manufacturer and inquire about their manufacturing practices (e.g. Dedicated line?) I am confused. Did the label actually say gluten free and yet it barley in it? -
ARCHIVED caution: good belly juice NOT gluten-free.
cyclinglady replied to ironictruth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes! When I was being diagnosed the traditional "clean out" time for a colonoscopy prep did not work for me due to small intestinal damage. I originally just went in for a routine colonoscopy and during the consult the GI suggested an endoscopy and celiac testing due to anemia. Now, I will be required to do twice the clean out procedures! I am dreading... -
ARCHIVED So here's my story...any help greatly appreciated
cyclinglady replied to Laura.D's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
So what? That means you were gluten-free compliant and your celiac disease was not active (remission) last July. Anything could have happened since then (and it obviously has). Please find a celiac-savvy GI and keep every single record and document like crazy. Obviously your GI doctor is not following the standard level of care for celiac disease...- 29 replies

ARCHIVED So here's my story...any help greatly appreciated
cyclinglady replied to Laura.D's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Researchers are not recommending the old Gliadin tests anymore because they have been replaced by the DGP tests. The OP should request those. The DGP tests are better for determining dietary compliance and can be just as good at making an initial celiac disease diagnosis. ARCHIVED Bone Density Testing
cyclinglady replied to Indigosue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As a mom and a celiac who has osteoporosis and fractures, I would not worry about new bone scans as long as your son is diet compliant. You should insist on a complete celiac blood test each year to insure he is adhering to the diet. Once he hits the teen years this is critical. My daughter, a teen, has friend who has celiac. She's ended up getting really... -
ARCHIVED So here's my story...any help greatly appreciated
cyclinglady replied to Laura.D's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am STRONGLY encouraging you to rule out a glutening by testing and getting a full celiac panel. Why continue to speculate? Glutening symptoms can evolve and change. It can also trigger other issues. What might have been a few days of misery can extend for months. Bile duct issues are serious. My aunt had her gallbladder out (non-functioning...- 29 replies

ARCHIVED Celiac, Type 1 diabetes and blood sugars
cyclinglady replied to nmlove's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
His insulin will be need to be adjusted based on what he is eating (you already know that). I think Bernstein's book (though a bit radical for a kid) points out that keeping a diet consistent with fewer carbs means less work guessing at how much insulin you will need. But he wrote that when he was just injecting. Now there are pumps and APPS to help... -
ARCHIVED Celiac, Type 1 diabetes and blood sugars
cyclinglady replied to nmlove's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I do not have TD1 and have not been tested for GAD antibodies, but I am very insulin resistant (Diabetic per my doctor) and I maintain my blood sugar through diet (I eat to my meter to prevent blood spikes over 140). During my research I have come to understand that if you have celiac disease and TD1, the gluten-free diet may help a TD1 better control... -
ARCHIVED Strange stmptoms
cyclinglady replied to Nredekop's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately in order to get a diagnosis, you have to be consuming gluten daily and depending on the tests, it can be 8 to 12 weeks (blood test) or 2 to 4 weeks (for endoscopy/biopsies). For DH (celiac rash), it must be active and the dermatologist must be very celiac savvy. Here's more information about testing: Open Original... -
Welcome to the forum! Be sure to browse through our DH section. You do need to find a dermatologist who know EXACTLY how to biopsy for DH.

ARCHIVED IgG of 85
cyclinglady replied to dyspepticgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, once you have one AI, you can develop more. For example, I have both celiac disease (dx 2013) and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (dx 1997). I am hoping that I do not develop anymore! I never had an ANA test. Let's hope others will chime in. -
