  1. Erica, I'm totally drooling. That sounds SOOOO good. Nancy
  2. Hey Karen - There's usually a little button on the little control box that you can push to flush. Not sure if it works while you're still sitting, but I would think so.
  3. Pamela's Amazing Wheat Free Bread mix is puffy. I make it in my Cuisinart Breadmaker on the gluten-free setting. It gets the same loft as I would expect from regular bread and isn't dense. Nancy
  4. Open Original Shared Link Good to see such a thorough article in a regional paper.
  5. I think with the red hair it's the Irish connection. One of the people I suspect is Calista Flockhart. I remember seeing her on Saturday Night Live and thinking how very gray her teeth were. That can be a sign of bulemia, but bulemia could also be, in a round-about way, a sign of celiac. I think I remember her saying, after that one picture came...
  6. My new mission has become finding a recipe or mix for gluten-free sugar cookies (not pre-made). I've tried a few mixes and didn't find anything I liked so far. I'm getting to the point where I want to try some recipes if I can't find a mix I like. But a mix would be so much easier if I could find one. Any suggestions? Best and worst cookie mixes...
  7. Oooo... Excellent point.
  8. My dad had that. He always thought it was because he wore jeans all the time. My uncle has it too. I however, being a girl, was never so lucky to lose the hair on my legs. Nancy
  9. My MIL makes the best potato salad. I just recently got the recipe out of her. She boils the potatoes (russet in this case) whole and unpeeled. Then she lets them cool completely in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight. Then she peels the potatoes with a paring knife and cubes them up. I tried this last week, and it's works really well,...
  10. Pamela's Amazing Wheat-Free Bread Mix - My kids even like it, and my daughter requests the toast at least a couple of times a week for breakfast. I made BLTs with it last week, and it was fantastic. Nancy
  11. I think that who ever made that offensive statement may be getting glutened by their personal care products. It sounds like a snippy, rude thing, that a celiac would say if they were glutened. Seriously. And it is very offensive. I'm not going to be buying their magazine. As the magazine-reading celiac public, we are their customers. The first rule...
  12. From what I remember, the genetic test that they do through doctors offices only tests for the main genes. (DQ2 and DQ8 I think...) If you can find out what lab they used, we can probably figure out if that's all they test for, of if they test for all the same genes that Enterolab tests for. There are a lot of us here who have DQ1. Read my sig line for...
  13. Yea, I'd be most suspicious of the bin. Before I knew better, I'd sometimes use the same scoop for a couple different things when I bought bin stuff. Now, I never by anything in bins because I know I couldn't be the only one who has done that. Milk could be it too. Hope you feel better. Nancy
  14. A lot of Pantene is gluten-free. I'm not fond of it, but it's easy to throw in the cart at Walmart. Nancy
  15. My kids get green poop when they drink grape koolaid. I figure it's the blue-toned dye in the koolaid mixed with the yellowish brown of the poop. God. We really DO talk about everything here don't we? Nancy
  16. Absolutely. I had a period of time where the last thing in the world I wanted to do was eat. Just the smell of food would make me nauseous. The feeling of it in my mouth. How it felt to chew. The feeling of having a lump of wet cement in my stomach. When I did eat, I ate nutritionally dense things because I knew I would only be able stomach a few bites...
  17. I would give them whatever documentation you had, including from your naturopath. I would write a letter giving your experience with celiac and the doctors misdiagnosing you, or whatever else they did. I would also find either a news article or medical journal article that mentioned how prevalent and mis/undiagnosed celiac is at this point. Then let...
  18. I don't know much about Crohn's either. But your experience sounds like celiac to me, complete with the uninformed doctors. And how dare that doctor suggest to you that you may have CANCER and then do a takesy-backsy like a schoolyard bully. If a doctor ever did that to me, I'd be talking to the hospital administrators about it. You don't just throw...
  19. That's great that he's doing better. Crossing fingers that he keeps healing. Ya know, the actual sand-eating thing was never a factor for me. So I'm sure that's not it, at least in my case. I had such bad pain that I wasn't able to take my kids to the park (or anywhere else for that matter...). My husband built a sandbox in our back yard, but didn...
  20. I also have a double copy of DQ1, subtype 6. See my sig line for some of my issues over the years. In my experience and being around the boards for while, I react the same to gluten as someone who has the main genes for it. When I did enterolab tests for myself, I just did the gene one too. It sounds like for the same reason as you. Wanting to make...
  21. One of the things, looking back over the years, that made gluten-intolerance make sense for me was me almost passing out a few years ago from wheat grass (one time the fresh juice, and a couple of times the powder). I had never heard of anyone reacting to wheat or wheatgrass like that, since it was supposed to be so healthy. I thought I was just weird....
  22. Here's the response I got from Enterolab: Dear Nancy, Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer to your question yet. It could be an inability to fully digest grains in general due to an immature digestive system. I'm sorry I am unable to give you more information at this time, but I will try to broach the subject with Dr. Fine when he is back in town...
  23. I did this once way back in the gluten days. My dad said that a lot of the time the water isn't warm enough for the yeast to activate. It should be around 110F. I would - Check to make sure your yeast hasn't expired. Yeast is alive and will actually die after a while. Check your water temperature. Add a teaspoon of sugar to the yeast...
  24. Yea, I've pretty much decided to fly under the radar with the pediatrician. I was worried about the rest of my family thinking that I was just wanting her to be sick (they were really, really awful with me when I first found out about celiac). But, one of the reasons I don't want it on their permanent record is because we've got a lot of military in the...
