Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

Everything posted by Nantzie

  1. My dad didn't go to the doctor for his stomach problems until he already had Stage 4 inoperable stomach cancer. He died six months later. Total classic case of hindsight celiac. Nancy
  2. I'm a SAHM; Jenny is almost 5 and Mikey is 3.5. I used to be a medical transcriptionist - (note impressive semicolon usage ). My husband is an IT manager at a mortgage company. He's also helping me build a website for travel reviews and recommendations for people with celiac disease. I remember this thread last time, and how surprising...
  3. Yea, I think so too. I've notice that guys don't tend to see their doctors or look for answers for anything until their symptoms are so bad that it was interfering with their lives; not being able to work or socialize, being near-housebound, not being able to sleep. At least that's how it is in my family . Maybe they are our mystery lurkers...

    ARCHIVED Cnn

Heidi Collins on a Roll? Shouldn't this be in the Recipes section? (Get it? Get it?) At least we know she's gluten-free! Ba-dump-bump. I'll be here all week! Please tip your waitresses!
  5. Tiffany - Recipe please? We get the Ener-G Wheat Free Crackers too, which I think are kind of like Carr's Water Crackers - an unsalted saltine. My kids and I love them and we buy them by the case. Nancy
  6. What a great thing for you guys to do. There's definitely a market for it, which will only get bigger in the next year or two. First off, since your husband went to cooking school - Spelt, kamut, sprouted grains, wheat grass all have gluten. For some reason some cooking schools are still teaching to use spelt as an alternative to wheat, which doesn...
  7. This is cool. I hope it works the same way at home as it does for them in the lab. Nancy
  8. I'm guessing celebrity news gets first dibs, then they shuffle in the human interest stuff as they have room. Nancy
  9. I would also suggest making sure you're 100% gluten-free; avoiding second-hand gluten (cross contamination) like the plague, no shared cooking tools, new cutting board, make sure your haircare products, makeup, lotions are gluten-free, etc. So many times we hear about people getting a diagnosis and being told by their doctor "don't eat gluten". Which...
  10. That would also mean that both my kids and my husband, and a bunch of people in his family, would have it too. I've got two copies of DQ1, subtype 6 (0602 and 0609). My kids have one each of my genes - daughter has 0609 and son has 0602, plus they both have the 0301, which has made me wonder if my husband has two copies of 0301. I think it won...
  11. Definitely questionable. Possibility of fillers, possibility of being handled at the same time as buns, possibility of gluten on cooking surface. We'd need more info in order to help. Is this a hamburger patty from the grocery store? A fast food place? Restaurant? Family BBQ (second-hand gluten nightmare)? Let us know. Nancy
  12. I'm glad I was helpful. I know what you mean about wanting an official name. Usually when someone doesn't fit the strict diagnostic profile the diagnosis is stated as "gluten intolerance". There are also a couple other phrases - "non-celiac gluten intolerance" and "atypical celiac". Then there are the ones that we have made up here, trying to find...
  13. I would consider the Enterolab tests. My daughter (who is 4) came back barely positive, but when we tried her on the diet just to see what would happen it improved so much that SHE is fine being gluten-free. We were recently at a family birthday party and there was the huge gluten cake. When she asked me about it all I had to say was that it had gluten...
  14. What I've always heard here from the members who keep up on current research is that you need to be eating the equivalent to 3-4 slices of bread a day for three to four months in order to destroy your intestines to the point where there is so much damage that a biopsy would even have a chance of hitting some damage. This is going to come across as...
  15. Oh Paula, I'm so sorry. You and your family are in my prayers. Nancy
  16. It makes sense to me that it would at least stick to paper money and maybe even the grooves in coins. Gluten is sticky so it will stick to all sorts of things. They say that most money has detectable residue from illegal drugs on it, so if there's that, there's got to be gluten too. There are so many things through the course of a day that you can touch...
  17. If you can find it my favorite is Gluten-Free Pantry's Angel Food Cake mix. Especially if you have a big stand mixer. I think it is exactly like a gluteny angel food cake. Love it. Nancy

    ARCHIVED Cruise

From what I understand, Royal Carribean does pretty good. We've been hoping to go on a cruise this year or next and RC is one of the ones we're looking seriously at. Here's a couple more recent threads on Royal Carribean. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Let us know how it goes. Nancy
  19. Yep. That's exactly how I would describe it. I think it's a DQ1 (gene) thing. More odd neuro symptoms with that. Nancy
  20. Forgot about that one. I get word slurring if I'm glutened really bad too. Don't feel drunk though, just sound it. Nancy
  21. I say you should give the gluten-free diet a 100% trial. A lot of people here (including me) had negative blood tests and/or negative biopsy. So you're in good company. Personally, trying the gluten-free diet anyway completely changed my life. I shudder to think how sick I would be now if I hadn't just given it a shot. I also think that...
  22. I do have neuro symptoms, but haven't had the numbness or feeling like I'm going to drop something. I do get the internal shakes that you're talking about if I'm glutened. It's most noticeable at night and makes for a horrible version of insomnia. I did get a feeling of head emptiness at first, but for me it was because my daily headaches went away...
  23. I also had negative blood test and negative biopsies. I tried the gluten-free diet just in case it might help. My life has never been the same. I was housebound due to a combination of my symptoms and having a newborn and a 2yo. Ever try to take 2yo and a newborn in a baby carrier/carseat out of a shopping cart when you're having 30-second-notice...
  24. Let her know also that this message board is here for her too. We have a friends and family section where she can come to get support as well. It can be mind-boggling to go through when you are the one who is getting all the symptoms, much less when you have no way to know how it feels. I had been gluten-free for about six months when my kids went...
  25. Now that my daughter has been gluten-free for a while, I can say that she had a constant not-feeling-good, but then had occasional upsurges in symptoms. Have your husband take a look at and/or communicate with www.enterolab.com. The doctor who runs it is working on a study and is just trying to get as much information and test results as he can before...
