ARCHIVED Omg...i Might Be On To Something
Nantzie replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hello! I've been seeing all the cute 70's and 80's pictures on the board and figured there must be something going on in Rachelville. You guys are all so adorable. I read a few pages back and I saw that you guys have been talking about yurts. It reminds me of my dad telling me about yurts and how they make the felt for them. I swear... -
ARCHIVED How Much Is Genetic Testing And Where To Get It?
Nantzie replied to janelyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can be gluten-free and still be tested by Enterolab. The genetic test is the cheek swab. The stool test checks for antibodies in the stool. Some of the same antibodies that they look for in the blood, I believe. The theory that Dr. Fine is working with is that the antibodies are much easier to detect in the stool than in the blood, and they... -
ARCHIVED How Much Is Genetic Testing And Where To Get It?
Nantzie replied to janelyb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Enterolab. They send their genetics to Laboratories at Bonfils, which is an immunogenetics lab that does matching for transplants, etc. They've been around since the 1970s. When I was deciding whether or not to go through Enterolab, I really researched the genetics aspect. I wanted to make sure that whoever was doing the genetic testing was reliable... -

Ooo... That's good to know. I tried the GFPantry French Bread mix before. I thought it was pretty good, but my husband doesn't like it. I've been meaning to experiment more, but just haven't. I've been using the muffin top pan trick to make hamburger buns too, but it really is kind of a PITA so I don't make them as often as I should. Using the... -
ARCHIVED Jelly Doughnut Anyone?
Nantzie replied to saaa-wheat<3's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Celiac really does prove that necessity IS the mother of invention. I love donuts. I've been okay with the Kinnikinnick donuts, but they're not the same. Going to try this technique soon. Thanks for posting this. Nancy -
ARCHIVED Glutened At A Wedding Help!
Nantzie replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ugh. Sorry you're feeling so awful. Immodium can help if you're still having GI symptoms (the caplets are gluten-free). I've had some luck with a product called Glutenease if you want to give that a shot. I've found that it doesn't help prevent a glutening, but if I've been glutened it seems to help soften the symptoms. I'm not sure if it would work... -

ARCHIVED Typical Symptoms Of Glutening?//
Nantzie replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It varies from person to person. As bad as my GI symptoms were pre-diagnosis, I don't usually get anything near as bad as I used to. I've also noticed that depending on how I've been glutened, and how much I got, I'll get different symptoms. But it follows a distinct pattern. For example I always get tired and irritable, but only sometimes do I get... -
ARCHIVED Well I Did It...
Nantzie replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
He sounds wonderful!! What a dream. A knowledgeable doctor, WITH strong opinions in our favor. There's a Doctors section here. If you could do a new post in that area and let us know his name and location, it could be helpful to others in the future. Sometimes that's the hardest part about the pre-diagnosis period. Doctors are getting better, but... -
ARCHIVED Plane Turbulence
Nantzie replied to UNCHeel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've never heard of anyone testing negative for at least gluten intolerant genes actually. They say that most people carry at least the gluten intolerant genes (it's just that not everyone develops the intolerance). But then again, people don't go around investigating these symptoms if they're not having serious problems. You don't come across celiac... -
ARCHIVED Bowel Control
Nantzie replied to Roxanna's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes. When mine was at it's worst, I would have to push my kids out of the way to run to the bathroom 10 feet away. Sometimes I wouldn't make it. I was scared to go anywhere because it happened without notice. It would just start coming out. Like your son says, I couldn't even feel it until it was already happening. It was horrible. I hope this ends... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease W/ Neurological Disease
Nantzie replied to Ms. Celiac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My belief is that if it is something anyone suspects, trying the gluten-free diet is always a good idea. Eating this way is actually pretty healthy. So there's no real reason not to just give it a shot. If gluten has anything to do with anyone's problems, the inconvenience of the diet is worth it 100 times over. I do think that getting tested is... -

ARCHIVED Sprouted Wheat Germ,safe?
Nantzie replied to kiddo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wouldn't risk it. I heard the same thing about wheat grass and almost passed out while I was home alone with my 2yo and 3mo. Scary. This was before I had even heard about celiac. I didn't know why it did that to me at the time, but it was definitely the wheat grass. -
ARCHIVED Confused About Enterolag Results
Nantzie replied to lapsy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to get dizzy standing up every once in a while. Now that you mention it, I can't remember the last time it happened. Hmm. I'll keep the ginkgo in mind. At this point, my balance is functionally fine, I just know there's that little bit if I do the "test". I'm curious if it will go away completely just by being gluten-free. Our new neighbors... -
ARCHIVED Forgive Me For I've Been Bad
Nantzie replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have done the same thing in the hypersensitive realm. I go weeks without getting glutened and start thinking I'm being too careful and get myself zapped. I bought a bag of gluten-free chips a couple weeks ago when I was out shopping and didn't wash my hands before I ate. Not smart. I also do the same thing with St. John's Wort - an herbal antidepressant... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Enterolag Results
Nantzie replied to lapsy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Really, it's just through being here mostly. I was told when I got my genetic results by someone here that DQ1 tends to have more neuro symptoms as well as the GI. As I've read other people's results and symptoms, it has held true in many cases that there tends to be more cases of neuro with DQ1. I was also told that you tend to be hypersensitive to gluten... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease W/ Neurological Disease
Nantzie replied to Ms. Celiac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I came across celiac as a way to fix my GI problems. I had no idea my pain and mobility issues (I could barely walk for about 2-3 years), headaches, balance, nightmares, insomnia, mood issues, etc. had anything to do with gluten. Some of my family members thought I was a hypochondriac and wouldn't even babysit for me so I could go to the doctor. My... -
I hope you're feeling better. The best way I found to keep temptation at bay is to keep a big stash of gluten-free goodies. There are always those days when you're just ticked at the whole situation. Massive amounts of chocolate can go a long way toward making yourself feel better. The automatic mom thing can be hard to adjust out of too. I...

Nantzie replied to janelyb's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Janel - I was planning on going to this, but my husband's got crisis stuff at work. He's going to be up all night tonight, and probably some long nights the rest of the week. I was really looking forward to it too. Sigh... Maybe next month. Nancy -
ARCHIVED Rediculous Conspiracy Theory, Or Not?
Nantzie replied to UR Groovy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've heard about this every couple years since the late-1980's. I'm not sure if it's an urban myth, or whether it's a proposal that keeps getting shot down that they keep trying. If you go to www.fda.gov, you might be able to find some information about it. If you can't find anything, you could email them. Let us know if you find anything out... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Enterolag Results
Nantzie replied to lapsy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have one of the genes I have: DQ1, subtype 6. It tends to cause neuro and mood issues a little more. You may have pain or mobility issues (like fibromyalgia), headaches, sleep issues, nightmares, balance issues, irritability, anger, anxiety, depression, etc. These can be symptoms that other gene types have, but with DQ1, subtype 6, they seem... -
