Oh absolutely Lisa! With a positive blood test she should have been diagnosed as celiac in the first place (a well-informed doctor would have done that). I've seen a lot of people here who have an official diagnosis based on blood alone. So, yes. I believe that Joanne has actually full-fledged celiac. Not gluten intolerance. Nancy

ARCHIVED Doctor
Nantzie replied to bchapa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
These are the only two KNOWN genetic markers for celiac. They know that they are others because only 85% (I think that's the right number) of biopsy-proven celiacs have DQ2 or DQ8. That also doesn't mean that he doesn't have gluten intolerance, which is equally as serious as celiac. There are a lot of people here who had negative or inconclusive... -
ARCHIVED Head Issues, No Gi Issues
Nantzie replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Everybody is effected differently, which is why it's so hard for doctors to spot it. It's also common to have no symptoms but still have a positive biopsy. Nancy -
My back and hips were so painful I could barely walk. When I found out about celiac I had been planning on asking my doctor how to go about applying for a handicaped placard for my car because just walking across a parking lot had me in tears. After I went gluten-free it went away. Poof! Now the only time I have pain is when I've been glutened or if...

I struggled with this for a long time because I didn't want to call myself something I'm not. I didn't want to offend anyone who really did have a positive biopsy. But as I have spent more and more time on the board, I've seen how small the difference is between someone with biopsy-positive celiac and gluten intolerance as far as how they have to...

Here are some resources in South Texas - they both have lists of gluten-free stores that you can stop at on your way to your family's house to stock up. Houston Open Original Shared Link San Antonio Open Original Shared Link Nancy -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease?
Nantzie replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh my gosh - the doctor doesn't even make sense. You can't see villi damage without a microscope. She may be referring to the scalloped appearance that the intestines can have when the damage is bad enough? How many biopsies did they take anyway? They're supposed to take 5 or 6 at least. The damage from celiac is patchy and scattered. It has been... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Diagnosis
Nantzie replied to elbar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well I think your doctors may be paying too much attention to "Golf" and not enough to their "Medical Journals". Any doctor who does even five minutes worth of research on celiac, or bothered to contact any of the celiac associations would have known that if you have already been diagnosed with celiac, you have celiac and will always have celiac.... -
I didn't know you could do that at cafepress too. I know I've seen all sorts of companies using them, I just thought they were a t-shirt company that came up with this stuff. Good to know. I know they have tons of celiac things already. Off to play. Nancy

I came across this site today. You can buy t-shirts that other people have designed, design your own t-shirts, add them to the list of t-shirts that other people can buy. They also do stuff like mugs, buttons, mousepads, bumper stickers, etc. There are already several designs related to celiac. I've never been an artsy person with the computer...

ARCHIVED Unedible Products

I think it's worth it for anyone on the gluten-free diet to go 100% at least for a trial period. That's the only way you'll ever be able to completely tell how gluten effects you. If you don't find that it improves things, then it's your choice how you choose to do all of this. But for most of us, the improvements are so significant that it's worth the... -
ARCHIVED Extreme Fatigue After Ingesting Gluten?
Nantzie replied to bigapplekathleen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One of the big reasons I have to stay home when I'm glutened is because of the awful gas I get (why should everyone else suffer? ). I'll get some to keep on hand for those times when I HAVE to go somewhere. Thanks. Nancy -

A "tell" is a good way to put it. Getting glutened for me is such a specific group of reactions that it's pretty easy to tell it from food poisoning or anything else. Last week I got really sick, but I only got D. So I knew it wasn't gluten. It took me a while to figure out what it was that did it to me, and then finally figured out that it was... -

Never thought about the killing with kindness and them becoming dependant on handouts aspect. Totally true. We won't feed them. Thanks for letting us know. We have a fish hatchery a few miles away where they provide food for you to feed the fish. When the kids want to feed something, we'll go there. Nancy

The dried corn sounds much more fun, actually. Maybe we'll do that instead. And I'll be able to keep some on hand in my backpack without worrying that it will go bad. I'll check to see if there are any local regulations about feeding ducks here too. Thanks guys. Nancy
-
We have really pretty bike trails that wind through the wetlands near our house. The other day a family was feeding bread to the ducks and it got me wondering. Does anyone know, with all the alternative flours we use, if there are potential problems with feeding ducks or geese gluten-free bread? I'm guessing bread isn't terribly healthy for them...

How cool is that! Thanks for sharing that with us. Do you find that it helps with other symptoms, or mostly just the GI ones (which is plenty)? Nancy -
ARCHIVED La Choy, San-j, Eden Soy Sauce
Nantzie replied to larry mac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree. We could use a resident guinea pig - uh, I mean food critic. My favorite soy sauce of the two I've tried (I've never tried Eden) is San-J. It's very Kikkoman-ish. Nancy -

ARCHIVED Is It Celiac? Please Help
Nantzie replied to justkaty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
90% of what I buy is regular stuff. The specialty stuff I buy are bread, crackers, pasta and occasionally premade cookies and ice cream cones. I buy other things every once in a while, but these are our main replacement products. A few of the major food manufacturers make it a lot easier for us. Kraft, Frito Lay, McCormick and ConAgra all have policies... -

The krumkake iron has little grooves in it that would hold gluten. I'm not sure it would be safe to use your sister's iron. If it looks like it's okay, I'd still scrub every bit of it, inside and out, and get the design part scrubbed out with a new toothbrush. Also make sure you cover the cone roller (usually made of wood) with a couple layers of aluminum... -
I had a really scary brainfog driving experience probably a month before I found out celiac even existed. Leaving my neighborhood, it took me a minute to remember what color on the streetlight was the green one. Yep. Turned around and went home. Nancy

ARCHIVED Magazine's Article Concerning Gluten
Nantzie replied to JodiC's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think it was completely irresponsible for them to mention the gluten-free diet and not explain celiac disease at the same time. I do like that they point to celiac.com and I think that will fill people in on the reality of it, but they could at least have spent a paragraph or two hitting the high points. That does worry me too, that as uneducated as...
